Treatment of 2-arylbenzoic acids with N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) and NaI at 70 degrees C under fluorescent lighting condition gave the corresponding 3,4-benzocoumarins in good yields under transition-metal-free condition. It was found that the reactivity of NCS with NaI for the formation of 3,4-benzocoumarins from 2-arylbenzoic acids was as high as that with NIS. Thus, the formation of carboxyl radicals and their cyclization onto an aromatic ring from 2-arylbenzoic acids with much less expensive NCS and NaI, than NIS could be successfully carried out to form 3,4-benzocoumarins.

Disubstituted pendant-functionalized block copolymer consisting of insulating polynorbornene and conductive polyacetylene segments was synthesized by tandem metathesis polymerization, and displayed high dielectric constant of 30 and low dielectric loss of about 0.04, while behaved bad film-forming property, which could be improved by incorporating polycyclooctene into polynorbomene backbone. The generated flexible block copolymer with well-defined nanostructure exhibited a relatively high dielectric constant of 23, very low dielectric loss of below 0.0035, and high stored and released energy densities up to 4.52 and 4.02 J cm(-3) at the electric field of 165 MV m(-1),respectively, accompanied with the charge-discharge efficiency of 90%. The enhanced dielectric and energy storage capability were attributed to high permanent dipole moment and the interfacial polarization derived from the unique nanomorphology of block copolymer.

Anthurium is an important ornamental crop in the world market and its floral scent can enhance its ornamental value. To date, studies of the components and formation mechanism of the floral scent of Anthurium are relatively few. In this study, the scent profiles of two Anthurium varieties were measured by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). There were 32 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) identified in Anthurium ‘Mystral’, and the most abundant compound was eucalyptol (57.5%). Extremely small amounts of VOCs were detected in Anthurium ‘Alabama’. Compared with A. ‘Alabama’, most genes related to floral scent synthesis exhibited a higher expression in A. ‘Mystral’, including AaDXS, AaDXR, AaMDS, AaHDS, AaTPS, AaDAHPS, AaADT2, AaPAL1, and AaPAL2. In order to produce new varieties of Anthurium with fragrance, 454 progenies of two crossbred combinations of A. ‘Mystral’ and A. ‘Alabama’ were obtained. Four F1 generation plants with different floral scent intensities were selected for further study. The major components of floral scent in the progenies were similar to that of the parental A. ‘Mystral’ plant. The expression patterns of genes related to floral scent synthesis were consistent with the relative contents of different types of VOCs. This study revealed the profiles of volatile compounds and associated gene expression in two Anthurium cultivars and their F1 hybrids, which provided a basis for the floral scent inheritance of Anthurium andraeanum.

The reactivity of ortho-functionalized N-heterocycle-substituted iodoarenes (NHIAs) as organocatalysts in iodine(I/III)-mediated oxidations was systematically investigated in the alpha-tosyloxylation of ketones as the model reaction. During a systematic catalyst evolution, it was found that NH-triazoles and benzoxazoles have the most significant positive influence on the reactivity of the central iodine atom. A further catalyst improvement which focused on the substitution pattern of the arene revealed a remarkable ortho-effect. By introduction of an o-OMe group we were able to generate a novel NHIA with a so far unseen catalytic efficiency. This new catalyst is not only easy to synthesize but also enabled the alpha-tosyloxylation of carbonyl compounds at the lowest reported catalyst loading of only 1 mol%. Finally, the performance of this iodine(I) catalyst was successfully demonstrated in intramolecular oxidative couplings of biphenyls and oxidative rearrangements.

Three novel flexible sulfur-containing MOF materials named Co-URJC-5, Cu-URJC-6 and Zn-URJC-7, based on the 5,5′-thiodiisophthalic acid linker have been synthesized through solvothermal methods and characterized by different physicochemical techniques. Hydrogen adsorption analysis at room temperature reveals that these compounds display a gate-opening type adsorption mechanism at low pressures, attributed to the flexible nature of the H4TBTC ligand. This behavior is even more noticeable for Cu-URJC-6, since the layer arrangement by p-p stacking interactions between the aromatic layers could contribute to the flexibility of the structure. These results can be considered as a representative example to elucidate how MOF structures are built using flexible ligands and more significantly as a promising route for designing materials with selective gas sorption properties.

A simple and an efficient approach for in situ preparation of palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) in ionic liquid crystal (ILC) microemulsion is described. Microemulsion was formed by using a ternary mixture of triton X-100/ILC/water (in the ratio of 1.4:0.1:8.5). Three such microemulsions-1, 2 and 3 were formed by using three different ILCs namely ammonium ILC containing a cholesterol core (ILC-1), imidazolium ILC bearing a cholesterol core (ILC-2) and imidazolium ILC containing a biphenyl core (ILC-3), respectively. The Pd NPs were characterised using UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. Among the three, microemulsion-2 which was prepared using ILC-2 yielded stable NPs with an average particle size of similar to 20 nm. The NPs prepared in all three emulsions were examined as catalyst for Heck reaction. The catalytic efficiency was analysed for four cross-coupling reactions involving iodobenzene with different substituted alkenes namely methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and styrene. The coupling reactions were completed in a shorter period with good yields. Further, the recyclability test of Pd NPs revealed that the particles showed good activity until third catalytic cycle. The Pd NPs prepared in microemulsion-2 showed better activity compared to those prepared in microemulsions-1 and -3. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, the unique capacity of bifunctional BrOnsted bases to generate alpha-branched ketone dienolates and control both site- and stereoselectivity of their addition reactions to representative classes of carbon electrophiles (i.e., vinyl sulfones, nitroolefins, formaldehyde) is documented. We demonstrate that by using selected chiral tertiary amine/squaramide catalysts, the reactions of beta,gamma-unsaturated cycloalkanones proceed through the dienolate C alpha almost exclusively and provide all-carbon quaternary cyclic ketone adducts in good yields with very high enantioselectivities. A minor amount (<5%) of gamma-addition is observed when nitroolefins are used as electrophiles. The parent acyclic ketone dienolates proved to be less reactive under these conditions, and thus still constitute a challenging class of substrates. Herein we report the photo- and electrochemical characterization of pyrimidopteridine N-oxide-based heterocycles. The potential of their application as organic photoredox catalysts is showcased in the photomediated contra-thermodynamic E -> Z isomerization of cinnamic acid derivatives and oxidative cyclization of 2-phenyl benzoic acid to benzocoumarin using molecular oxygen as a mild oxidant.
