Development of organic nanoparticles with high fluorescence, good biocompatibility along with strong resistance to photobleaching through simple synthetic routes is important for diverse applications such as sensing and bioimaging. Herein, we present the development of a pyrene excimer nanoaggregate which shows aggregation induced emission (AIE) effect in a solvent mixture of THE and water. The pyrene based fluorescent probe, dimethyl-5-(pyren-1-ylmethyleneamino)isophthalate (5-DP) was synthesized through a simple single step condensation reaction from inexpensive reagents. The photophysical studies of nanoaggregated system further corroborates the AIE active behavior of 5-DP probe at different water fractions (f(w) = 0% to 90%), where the hydrogen bonding interaction between imine and water molecules led to suppression of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) inducing significant enhancement in fluorescence. The highly photostable nanoaggregates were explored as a selective fluorescence turn off sensor for phenolic nitroaromatics and the chemo-selectivity was highly pronounced for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid), that showed efficient quenching in aqueous as well as solid phase, with a detection limit of 10 nM in aqueous medium. The quenching efficiency of the nanoaggregates can be ascribed to a combination of factors including efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer, inner filter effect and coulombic interaction between picric acid and the aggregated probe molecules. Further, random aggregation of the pyrene derivative could be controlled for the formation of fluorescent spherical nanoparticles using Pluoronics P-123 block copolymers as encapsulating agents. The resulting composite could be used as a neoteric cell imaging probe with significantly less cytotoxicity, thus showing their potential biological applications.

The American Matsutake, Tricholoma magnivelare (Peck) Redhead, is an edible wild mushroom with a distinctive aroma described as mushroom and spice with subtle floral and citrus nuances. In this study, a total of 36 odorants were identified from T. magnivelare using solvent-assisted flavor evaporation and aroma extract dilution analysis. Stable isotope dilution assays were performed to quantitate 14 odorants with flavor dilution factors >= 64. Odorants with high odor activity values (OAVs) included 1-octen-3-one (OAV 2125), linalool (OAV 650), (2E,4E)-nona-2,4-dienal (OAV 304), and 1-octen-3-ol (OAV 206). An odor simulation model matched the odor profile of the fresh mushroom. Omission studies showed that linalool, hexanal, (2E,4E)-nona2,4-dienal, methyl (E)-3-phenylprop-2-enoate, and 1-octen-3-one or 1-octen-3-ol were essential to the aroma of T. magnivelare. Chiral chromatography showed that a-pinene was a scalemic mixture of 34% (R)-(+) to 66% (S)-(-), while 1-octen-3-ol was present as 95% (R)-(-) to 5% (S)-(+), and linalool was 96% (R)-(-) to 4% (S)-(+). These results establish the base for future investigations into the aroma chemistry of other members of the genus Tricholoma.

The practical problems of insufficient mechanical strength, poor processability, tedious synthesis and flammability facing shape memory polymers have limited their further usage in industrial fields, especially in construction and aerospace. A novel and very simple method of ternary polymerization is presented here to prepare multi-functional copolyesters from general poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) through the new well-designed third monomer that features pendent phenylacetylene-phenylimide units. The pi-pi stacking between phenylacetylene groups as a reversible net-point not only endows the copolyesters with good shape memory and self-healability, but also reinforces the interchain interaction, leading to high tensile strength (79.6-89.6 MPa). Interestingly enough, the phenylacetylene can synergistically crosslink with the unsaturated C N group generated from the phenylimide during burning, resulting in excellent flame retardancy. Thermoplastic smart copolyesters can be designed into fire alarms and can also be used for 3D printing. The printed geometries exhibit good shape memory behaviors, which could be deformed into a small size to save space during transportation/storage and allow manufacturing freedom for space applications.

In this study, the surface of magnetic MCM-41 nanoparticles (MCM-41/Fe3O4) was modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and further, 1-methyl imidazole was anchored on their surface using cyanuric chloride as a linker. Then, Pd2+ ions were immobilized on the surface of the modified MCM-41/Fe3O4 (Pd-imi-CC@MCM-41/Fe3O4), and its application was studied as a magnetically recyclable nanocatalyst in carbon-carbon coupling reactions between a wide range of aryl halides and butyl acrylate, methyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, phenylboronic acid, or 3,4-difluorophenylboronic acid under the conditions of a phosphine-free ligand and an air atmosphere. This catalyst has the advantages of both the Fe3O4 nanoparticles and mesoporous MCM-41. The structure of the catalyst was characterized via TEM, SEM, EDS, WDX, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, XRD, TGA, FT-IR, and AAS. Also, the recovered catalyst was characterized via SEM, AAS and FT-IR. All the products from the carbon-carbon coupling reaction were obtained with excellent yields and high TON and TOF values, which indicate the high efficiency and activity of this catalyst. The selectivity of this catalyst was studied with various aryl halides bearing different functional groups. Furthermore, the heterogeneity and stability of Pd-imi-CC@MCM-41/Fe3O4 was studied via AAS, and leaching and poisoning tests. According to the results, this heterogeneous catalyst can be reused several times.

The direct oxidation of alcohols to esters is an environmentally benign and cost-effective organic synthetic strategy, but it is still a great challenge to discover an economic, highly active, and long-term stable catalyst for efficient transformation of alcohols to esters under milder conditions. Herein, we developed cobalt and copper nanoparticle -co-decorated nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts (CoCu@NCn) through two steps of ball milling and calcination. It was found that CoCu@NCn could catalyze the oxidation of alcohols to esters effectively in the absence of basic additives. The catalytic activity was much higher than those of monometallic Co@NC2 and Cu@NC2 samples, and the catalyst can be conveniently recovered and quite steadily reused. Through a series of control experiments and characterizations, it is concluded that the remarkable catalytic performance of CoCu@NC2 was associated with the synergistic effect between the two metal components, the enhanced basic active sites and the active surface area.

Treatment of 2-arylbenzoic acids with N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) and NaI at 70 degrees C under fluorescent lighting condition gave the corresponding 3,4-benzocoumarins in good yields under transition-metal-free condition. It was found that the reactivity of NCS with NaI for the formation of 3,4-benzocoumarins from 2-arylbenzoic acids was as high as that with NIS.
