BACKGROUND Thrips Anaphothrips obscurus are one of the cosmopolitan major pests feeding on cereals and other grasses. In order to develop alternatives of chemical insecticides for thrips control, based on fumigant activity screening and evaluation of 22 essential oil (EO) compounds against the thrips, the binary interactions of methyl salicylate and carvacrol (MS-C) with high fumigant toxicity were studied systematically by bioassay and field trials. RESULTS The bioassay results showed that six in 22 EO compounds had high fumigant toxicity against both the second-instar nymphs and adults of A. obscurus, including methyl salicylate, carvacrol, thymol, trans-cinnamaldehyde, diallyl trisulfide, and L-perillaldehyde. Furthermore, the combination of methyl salicylate mixed with carvacrol at a volume ratio of 5:5 exhibited the most significant synergism against A. obscurus, with a poison ratio value of 1.32 and a co-toxicity coefficient of 151.15. The optimal formulation of microemulsion (ME) was composed of 5% methyl salicylate, 5% carvacrol, 46% adjuvant and 44% deionized water. The result of dynamic light scattering and stability showed that MS-C 10% ME was a transparent, single-phase and homogeneous liquid system. Field trials indicated that the ME displayed a significant control efficacy of about 89.17% on thrips in peppers, and 82.59% in broad bean on the seventh day post application with a dosage of 600.0 g A.I hm(-2), respectively. CONCLUSION The binary combination of MS-C possesses strikingly synergistic action against thrips A. obscurus, and the MS-C 10% ME has the potential to be developed as a botanical pesticide product for thrips control. Development of organic nanoparticles with high fluorescence, good biocompatibility along with strong resistance to photobleaching through simple synthetic routes is important for diverse applications such as sensing and bioimaging. Herein, we present the development of a pyrene excimer nanoaggregate which shows aggregation induced emission (AIE) effect in a solvent mixture of THE and water. The pyrene based fluorescent probe, dimethyl-5-(pyren-1-ylmethyleneamino)isophthalate (5-DP) was synthesized through a simple single step condensation reaction from inexpensive reagents. The photophysical studies of nanoaggregated system further corroborates the AIE active behavior of 5-DP probe at different water fractions (f(w) = 0% to 90%), where the hydrogen bonding interaction between imine and water molecules led to suppression of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) inducing significant enhancement in fluorescence. The highly photostable nanoaggregates were explored as a selective fluorescence turn off sensor for phenolic nitroaromatics and the chemo-selectivity was highly pronounced for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid), that showed efficient quenching in aqueous as well as solid phase, with a detection limit of 10 nM in aqueous medium. The quenching efficiency of the nanoaggregates can be ascribed to a combination of factors including efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer, inner filter effect and coulombic interaction between picric acid and the aggregated probe molecules. Further, random aggregation of the pyrene derivative could be controlled for the formation of fluorescent spherical nanoparticles using Pluoronics P-123 block copolymers as encapsulating agents. The resulting composite could be used as a neoteric cell imaging probe with significantly less cytotoxicity, thus showing their potential biological applications.

A family of four novel pyrazinyl-hydrazone based ligands have been synthesized with differing functionality at the 5-position of the central aromatic ring. Previous work has shown such ligands to form dinuclear triple mesocates which pack to form hexagonal channels capable of gas sorption. The effect of the peripheral functionality of the ligand on the crystal packing was investigated by synthesizing complexes1to4which feature amino, bromo, iodo and methoxy substituents respectively. Complexes1to3crystallized in the same hexagonal space groupP6(3)/mand featured 1D channels. However, on closer inspection while the packing of1is mediated by hydrogen bonding interactions, the packing of complexes2and3are not, due to a subtlety different pi-pi stacking interaction enforced by the halogen substituent. The more bulky nature of the methoxy substituent of4results in the complex crystallizing in the triclinic space groupP-1, featuring an entirely different crystal packing.

Conventional methods to improve the flame retardancy of polymeric materials usually involve the use of flame-retardant elements such as Cl, Br and P, however, their use may bring more smoke and toxic gases hazards, and more importantly, cause non-negligible environmental and ecological problems. In this work, we put forward a novel green strategy that eliminates the use of any conventional flame-retardant elements to improve the flame retardancy by incorporating a synergistically cross-linkable structure (named PN) containing phenylacetylene and phenylimide groups. The resulting PN copolymer exhibited an excellent 55% lower smoke release rate and 68% lower heat release rate than the pure polymer, as well as a high LOI value of 32% and UL-94 V-0 rating with excellent anti-dripping performance. TG-DSC, rheological and FTIR results proved the high cross-linking ability of the PN copolymer due to the synergistic cross-linking effect between the imide-isoimide rearrangement of phenylimide and the self-cross-linking of phenylacetylene. The SEM, Raman and Py-GC/MS results further upheld the condensed phase flame-retardant mechanism. This eco-friendly synergistic cross-linking strategy provided new perspective for the design and synthesis of polymeric materials with excellent flame retardancy, great anti-dripping performance, and low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gas.

Combined water pollution with the coexistence of heavy metals and organic contaminants is of great concern for practical wastewater treatment. In this study, a jaboticaba-like nanocomposite, titanate nanotubes supported TiO2 (TiO2/TiNTs), was synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal treatment. TiO2 /TiNTs had large surface area, abundant of -ONa/H groups and fine crystal anatase phase, thus exhibited both good adsorptive performance for Cu(II) and high photocatalytic activity for phenanthrene degradation. The maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity on TiO2/TiNTs was 115.0 mg/g at pH 5 according to Langmuir isotherm model, and > 95% of phenanthrene was degraded within 4 h under UV light. TiO2/TiNTs showed about 10 times higher observed rate constant (k(obs) ) for phenanthrene degradation compared to the unmodified TiNTs. More importantly, the coexistence of Cu(II) promoted photocatalytic degradation of phenanthrene, because the incorporated Cu(II) in the lattice of TiNTs could trap photo-excited electron and thus inhibited the electron-hole recombination. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicated that the sites of phenanthrene with high Fukui index (f(0)) preferred to be attacked by center dot OH radicals. The quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis revealed that the degradation intermediates had lower acute toxicity and mutagenicity than phenanthrene. TiO2/TiNTs also owned high stability, as only slight loss of Cu(II) and phenanthrene removal efficiency was observed even after four reuse cycles. The developed material in this study is of great application potential for water or wastewater treatment with multi-contaminants, and this work can help us to better understand the mechanisms on reaction between Ti-based nanomaterials and different kinds of contaminants.

Abundant aromatic carboxylic acids exist in great structural diversity from nature and synthesis. To date, the synthetically valuable decarboxylative functionalization of benzoic acids is realized mainly by transition-metal-catalyzed decarboxylative cross couplings. However, the high activation barrier for thermal decarboxylative carbometalation that often requires 140 degrees C reaction temperature limits both the substrate scope as well as the scope of suitable reactions that can sustain such conditions. Numerous reactions, for example, decarboxylative fluorination that is well developed for aliphatic carboxylic acids, are out of reach for the aromatic counterparts with current reaction chemistry. Here, we report a conceptually different approach through a low-barrier photoinduced ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT)-enabled radical decarboxylative carbometalation strategy, which generates a putative high-valent arylcopper(III) complex, from which versatile facile reductive eliminations can occur. We demonstrate the suitability of our new approach to address previously unrealized general decarboxylative fluorination of benzoic acids.

We found that in situ generated cerium(IV) carboxylate generated by mixing the precursor Ce((OBu)-Bu-t)(4) with the corresponding carboxylic acids served as efficient photocatalysts for the direct formation of carboxyl radicals from carboxylic acids under blue light-emitting diodes (blue LEDs) irradiation and air, resulting in catalytic decarboxylative oxygenation of aliphatic carboxylic acids to give C-O bond-forming products such as aldehydes and ketones. Control experiments revealed that hexanuclear Ce(IV) carboxylate clusters initially formed in the reaction mixture and the ligand-to-metal charge transfer nature of the Ce(IV) carboxylate clusters was responsible for the high catalytic performance to transform the carboxylate ligands to the carboxyl radical. In addition, the Ce(IV) carboxylate cluster catalyzed direct lactonization of 2-isopropylbenzoic acid to produce the corresponding peroxy lactone and gamma-lactone via intramolecular 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (1,5-HAT).

Various bromophenylalkenes were reductively photodebrominated by using 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1H-benzo-[d]imidazoline (DMBI) and 9,10-dicyanoanthracene. With deuterated DMBI analogs (the most effective was DMBI-d(11)), satisfactory to excellent isotopic yields were obtained. DMBI-d(11) could also be regenerated from the reaction mixtures with a recovery rate of up to 50%. The combination of the photodebromination reaction with conventional methods for bromoalkene synthesis enables sequential monodeuteration of a double bond without the necessity of a metal catalyst.
