By using the reduced Schiff base tricarboxylate ligand H(3)cip, one novel 3D Cd-based coordination polymer (Cd-CP) with the formula [Cd(Hcip)(bpea)(0.5)(H2O)](n) (H(3)cip = 5-(3-carboxybenzylamino)isophthalic acid, bpea = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) has been solvothermally synthesized. The prepared Cd-CP possesses a 4-connected CdSO4 net based on dinuclear {Cd-2} units. Luminescence measurements revealed that the complex exhibited ratiometric turn-on luminescence responses toward Al3+ and Cr3+ with a significant color change, which could be easily distinguished by the naked eye under ultraviolet light. Cd-CP can also respond to Fe3+ through a turn-off mechanism. Interestingly, the luminescence quenched by Fe3+@Cd-CP can be recovered and increased significantly by adding some competitive Al3+, while Cr3+ can only marginally increase the luminescence intensity of Fe3+@Cd-CP. Moreover, the detection of the three aforementioned metal ions can be realized by using Cd-CP-coated test papers, extending the potential application regions of the reported material to point-of-care tests and environmental field studies.

A visible-light photocatalytic aerobic oxidative lactonization of arene C(sp (2) )-H bonds proceeds in the presence of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) and tert -butyl nitrite (TBN). This study aimed to comparatively analyze the volatile flavor of rooibos tea (Aspalathus linearis) obtained by two commonly used flavor extraction methods, simultaneous distillation-extraction (SDE) and steam distillation under reduced pressure (DRP). The tea obtained by the two extraction methods, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to identify volatile aroma-related compounds. Descriptive sensory analysis of the extracted rooibos tea flavor was carried out by a trained panel (n = 7). Fifty volatile compounds were identified, including 26 and 25 aroma-active compounds by SDE (45.9 mu g/g) and DRP (37.5 mu g/g), respectively. SDE recovered larger quantities of alcohols, acids, and esters, whereas DRP was useful for analyzing thermally unstable volatile compounds, including various alcohols, aldehydes, and hydrocarbons. Descriptive sensory analysis revealed that ketones and phenolic compounds may be responsible for the sensory attributes woody and grassy green, whereas the aldehydes and acidic compounds may contribute to floral and fruity.

The Pd-catalyzed alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes using water as a promoter has been scarcely reported before. Herein, water instead of Bronsted/Lewis acid was found to effectively improve the catalytic performance of Pd (MeCN)(2)Cl-2-Xantphos system for alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes. Under the optimal conditions, the best yield of 97% was obtained for the target products (methyl 3-phenylpropanoate and methyl 2-phenylpropanoate) with L/B of 4.3 and TON of 192. With the involvement of water, Pd(MeCN)(2)Cl-2-Xantphos system also exhibited the moderate to good generality to alkoxycarbonylation of different kinds of alkenes with alcohols. The in situ high pressure FT-IR analysis verified that water played an important role in promoting formation and stability of Pd-H active species which was responsible for the efficient alkoxycarbonylation of alkenes. In addition, the ligand effect of Xantphos on this reaction was discussed.

A novel, biodegradable and environmental friendly magnetic cross-linked chitosan fibers and its cobalt complex was prepared and characterized by various techniques such as FT-IR, SEM, EDX, Elemental mapping, TEM, TGA, XRD and VSM analysis. Methyl trifluoroacetate (MTFA) was commonly considered as trifluoroacetylating reagent or trifluoromethylating reagent. In this work, we report the methylation behavior of MTFA under mild conditions with good functional group tolerance, allowing the transformation of a wide range of substrates, including N,H-heteroaromatic compounds, phenolic compounds, carboxylic acids, thiophenols, secondary amides and imides, in high yields. This method was preliminarily applied to the chemoselective methylation of bifunctionalized secondary amide.

Palladium colloids obtained from the degradation of Hermann-Beller palladacycle proved to be an efficient catalytic system in combination with silver oxide as a selective oxidant for the oxidative esterification of differently substituted benzyl alcohols in MeOH as solvent. Excellent reactivity exhibited by the catalytic system also allowed the alcoholic coupling partner to be changed from MeOH to a wide range of alcohols having diverse functionalities. The mildness of the developed protocol also made it possible to employ propargyl alcohol as the coupling partner without any observation of any interference of the terminal alkyne. Selective oxidative coupling of a primary alcoholic functional group over secondary in the case of glycols and glycerols was also made possible using the developed catalyst system. To test the relevancy of Pd/Ag combined catalysis mixed Pd/Ag colloids were synthesized, characterized by TEM, XRD and XPS and applied to oxidative-esterification successfully.

Bearded irises are ornamental plants with distinctive floral fragrance grown worldwide. To identify the floral scent profiles, twenty-seven accessions derived from three bearded iris, including Iris. germanica, I. pumila and I. pallida were used to investigate the composition and relative contents of floral scent components by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 219 floral scent components were detected in blooming flowers. The scent profile varied significantly among and within the three investigated species. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that terpenes, alcohols and esters contributed the most to the floral scent components and 1-caryophyllene, linalool, citronellol, methyl cinnamate, -cedrene, thujopsene, methyl myristate, linalyl acetate, isosafrole, nerol, geraniol were identified as the major components. In a hierarchical cluster analysis, twenty-seven accessions could be clustered into six different groups, most of which had representative scent components such as linalool, citronellyl acetate, thujopsene, citronellol, methyl cinnamate and 1-caryophyllene. Our findings provide a theoretical reference for floral scent evaluation and breeding of bearded irises.

Catalytic conversion of lignin to versatile aromatic compounds is attracting increasing attention. However, it is highly desirable but challenging to produce a specific chemical with high yield through lignin depolymerization in a one-pot process because of the complex structure of the lignin molecule (mainly composed of H, G, and S units). In this study, a series of metal-based deep eutectic solvents (M-DESs) were prepared and used for the catalytic tailoring of lignin H units to produce value-added methyl p-hydroxycinnamate (MPC). In particular, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) showed excellent catalytic performance for the selective production of MPC as the sole product with high yield and selectivity (105.8 mg g(-1) and 74.1%, respectively). Extensive characterizations using 2D HSQC NMR, C-13 NMR, and GPC demonstrated that MPC was obtained from the selective tailoring of p-coumaric acid (pCA) units via the cleavage of ester bonds in lignin. Furthermore, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) also exhibited efficiency to other herbaceous lignins, and showed excellent recyclability. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy for the valorization of lignin.
