This route features an unprecedented fast reaction rate with full conversion reached within 10 min at room temperature for aromatic isothiocyanates and excellent chemoselectivity for exocyclic products. The characterization of monomode passive polymer optical devices fabricated according to the POPCORN technol. by methods originated from electron, ion and optical spectroscopy is summarized. Impacts of observed waveguide perturbations on the optical characteristics of the waveguide are evaluated. In the POPCORN approach optical components for telecommunication applications are fabricated by photo-curing of liquid halogenated (meth)acrylates which were applied on molded thermoplastic substrates. For tuning of waveguide material refractive indexes with respect to the substrate refractive index frequently comonomer mixtures are used. The polymerization characteristics, especially the polymerization kinetics of individual monomers, determine the formation of copolymers. Therefore the unsaturation as function of UV-illumination time in the formation of halogenated homo- and copolymers was examined From different suitable copolymer system, after characterization of their glass transition temperatures, their curing behavior and their refractive indexes as function of the monomer ratios, monomode waveguides applying PMMA substrates were fabricated. To examine the materials composition also in the 6 X 6 μm2 waveguides they were visualized by TEM. With this method, e.g., segregation phenomena could be observed in the waveguide cross section characterization as well. The optical losses in monomode waveguides caused by segregation and other materials induce defects like micro bubbles formed as a result of shrinkage were quantized by return loss measurements. Defects causing scattering could be observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy and by conventional light microscopy.

Early-postemergence herbicide applications in the USA often include residual herbicides such as S-metolachlor to suppress late late-emerging Amaranthus spp. Although this practice benefits weed control, herbicide tankmixes can influence spray droplet size and drift potential during applications. The addition of S-metolachlor products to dicamba spray solutions generally decreases spray droplet size and increases spray drift potential. Advances in formulation technol. fostered the development of products with reduced spray drift potential, especially for herbicide premixes containing multiple active ingredients. The objective of this study was to compare the drift potential of a novel dicamba plus S-metolachlor premix formulation (capsule suspension) against a tankmix containing dicamba (soluble liquid) and S-metolachlor (emulsifiable concentrate) using different venturi nozzles. The MUG nozzle had greater DV0.5 (1128.6μm) compared to the ULDM (930.3μm), TDXL-D (872.9μm), and TTI nozzles (854.8μm). The premix formulation had greater DV0.5 (971.0μm) compared to the tankmix (922.3μm). Nozzle influenced spray drift deposition (P < 0.0001) and soybean biomass reduction (P = 0.0465). Herbicide formulation influenced spray drift deposition (P < 0.0001), and biomass reduction of soybean (P < 0.0001) and cotton (P = 0.0479). The novel capsule suspension formulation (premix) of dicamba plus S-metolachlor had reduced area under the drift curve (AUDC) (577.6) compared to the tankmix (913.7). Applications using the MUG nozzle reduced AUDC (459.9) compared to the other venturi nozzles (ranging from 677.4 to 1141.7). Study results evidence that advances in pesticide formulation can improve pesticide drift mitigation. Lignin biosynthesis occurs via radical coupling of guaiacyl and syringyl hydroxycinnamyl alc. monomers (i.e., “”monolignols””) through chem. condensation with the growing lignin polymer. With each chain-extension step, monolignols invariably couple at their β-positions, generating chiral centers. Here, we report on activities of bacterial glutathione-S-transferase (GST) enzymes that cleave β-aryl ether bonds in lignin dimers that are composed of different monomeric units. Our data reveal that these sequence-related enzymes from Novosphingobium sp. strain PP1Y, Novosphingobium aromaticivorans strain DSM12444, and Sphingobium sp. strain SYK-6 have conserved functions as β-etherases, catalyzing cleavage of each of the four dimeric α-keto-β-aryl ether-linked substrates (i.e., guaiacyl-β-guaiacyl, guaiacyl-β-syringyl, syringyl-β-guaiacyl, and syringyl-β-syringyl). Although each β-etherase cleaves β-guaiacyl and β-syringyl substrates, we have found that each is stereospecific for a given β-enantiomer in a racemic substrate; LigE and LigP β-etherase homologs exhibited stereospecificity toward β(R)-enantiomers whereas LigF and its homologs exhibited β(S)-stereospecificity. Given the diversity of lignin’s monomeric units and the racemic nature of lignin polymers, we propose that bacterial catabolic pathways have overcome the existence of diverse lignin-derived substrates in nature by evolving multiple enzymes with broad substrate specificities. Thus, each bacterial β-etherase is able to cleave β-guaiacyl and β-syringyl ether-linked compounds while retaining either β(R)- or β(S)-stereospecificity.

Mild heat stress can improve mitochondrial respiratory capacity in skeletal muscle. However, long-term heat interventions are scarce, and the effects of heat therapy need to be understood in the context of the adaptations which follow the more complex combination of stimuli from exercise training. The purpose of this work was to compare the effects of 6 wk of localized heat therapy on human skeletal muscle mitochondria to single-leg interval training. Thirty-five subjects were assigned to receive sham therapy, short-wave diathermy heat therapy, or single-leg interval exercise training, localized to the quadriceps muscles of the right leg. All interventions took place 3 times per wk. Muscle biopsies were performed at baseline, and after 3 and 6 wk of intervention. Mitochondrial respiratory capacity was assessed on permeabilized muscle fibers via high-resolution respirometry. The primary finding of this work was that heat therapy and exercise training significantly improved mitochondrial respiratory capacity by 24.8 ± 6.2% and 27.9 ± 8.7%, resp. (p < 0.05). Fatty acid oxidation and citrate synthase activity were also increased following exercise training by 29.5 ± 6.8% and 19.0 ± 7.4%, resp. (p < 0.05). However, contrary to our hypothesis, heat therapy did not increase fatty acid oxidation or citrate synthase activity. Six weeks of muscle-localized heat therapy significantly improves mitochondrial respiratory capacity, comparable to exercise training. However, unlike exercise, heat does not improve fatty acid oxidation capacity. In this work, free radical photopolymerization of trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) is initiated. We investigated the corresponding photoreactivity by using Type II photoinitiator (PI) systems based on thioxanthone (TX) as a hydrogen acceptor and five amine-type mols., such as N-phenylglycine (NPG), triethylamine (TEA), triethanolamine (TEOA), 2,2′-(4-methylphenylimino)diethanol (p-TDEA), and N-phenyldiethanolamine (n-PDEA), as hydrogen donors. Their photochem. and photophys. properties are studied. The TX hydrogen acceptor displayed rather red-shifted compared to all the hydrogen donor compounds The hydrogen donor compounds exhibited the absorption band at lower than 300 nm, which followed the trend of p-TDEA > n-PDEA > NPG > TEOA > TEA. All the packages exhibit good electron-transfer ability by the calculation of the free energy changes (ΔGET) through cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement. However, the hydrogen donors with different steric hindrance, secondary, and tertiary amines have a decisive influence on the photoreactivity; i.e., the TX/TEOA package shows the best double-bond conversion (DC) efficiency than other formulations under similar weight ratios (hydrogen acceptor: hydrogen donor = 1:2 wt%). We then conduct the photoreactivity based on TX/TEOA formulation with different weight ratios. The DC values are in the order of 1:2 wt% > 1.5:1.5 wt% > 2:1 wt%. Under suitable amount of hydrogen donor, the TX/TEOA-based formulation also exhibits stable DC value at air atm.

Although nanotoxicol. studies have shown that respiratory exposure of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) could induce adverse health effects, limited biomarkers associated with occupational exposure of TiO2 NPs were reported. The purpose of this study is to screen serum biomarkers among workers occupationally exposed to TiO2 NPs using metabolomics. Compared with the control group, a total of 296 serum metabolites were differentially expressed in the TiO2 NPs-exposed group, of which the relative expression of 265 metabolites increased, and the remaining 31 decreased. Three machine learning methods including random forest (RF), support vector machines (SVM), and boruta screened eight potential biomarkers and simultaneously selected a metabolite, Liquoric acid. Through multiple linear regression anal. to adjust the influence of confounding factors such as gender, age, BMI, smoking and drinking, occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs was significantly related to the relative expression of the eight potential biomarkers. Meanwhile, the receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) of these potential biomarkers had good sensitivity and specificity. These potential biomarkers were related to lipid peroxidation, and had biol. basis for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs. Therefore, it was demonstrated that the serum metabolites represented by Liquoric acid were good biomarkers of occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs.

The increasing world population has made researchers to explore and validate alternate food sources for the future; in that regard, due to the attractive nutritive profile, edible insects ensure the food and feed security in some developing countries. Crickets are orthopteran edible insects widely eaten around the world not as an emergency food but as a delicacy. This present study aims to stabilize a mass rearing technique of field cricket Coiblemmus compactus using cost-effective rearing medium and feed materials. The reared adult crickets were processed and analyzed for its proximate, mineral, amino acid, fatty acid and energy contents. The cost-effective rearing methods were standardised for the cricket species, and the obtained nutritive values were comparatively higher than other edible meat sources. The cricket Coiblemmus compactus had 50.2 ± 0.37, 26.50 ± 0.80, 8.20 ± 1.61, 5.50 ± 0.48, 10.93 ± 0.19 and 5.40 ± 0.16 g/100 g of crude protein, crude fat, carbohydrate, crude fiber, moisture and ash contents, resp. The cricket also possessed higher amounts of potassium (897.83 ± 1.55 mg/100 g) and phosphorous elements (604.66 ± 4.11 mg/100 g) with 458.30 ± 0.29 kcal/100 g of energy content. The chromatog. studies showed the abundance of amino acid and fatty acid contents in the reared edible cricket. The attractive and high-protein nutritive profile of edible cricket Coiblemmus compcatus makes itself an alternate food and feed material to elevate food crisis in developing countries.
