Peng, Wen-Li published the artcileAccelerating Biodiesel Catalytic Production by Confined Activation of Methanol over High-Concentration Ionic Liquid-Grafted UiO-66 Solid Superacids, Name: Methyl docosanoate, the main research area is biodiesel production catalyst metal organic framework ionic liquid; crystalline microporous ordered solid superacid methanol heterogeneous transesterification.

Solid acids usually show lower catalytic activities than liquid acids because of their limited acid strength and presence of obvious diffusion limitation in the reactions. We report herein a variety of ionic liquid-grafted UiO-66 solid superacids synthesized from quaternization of UiO-66 with 1,3-propane sultone, ion-exchanging with H2SO4 or HSO3CF3. The developed UiO-66 solid superacids are highly efficient in catalyzing biodiesel production toward transesterification, which were better than the ionic liquid and neat H2SO4. The remarkable activities found in the UiO-66 solid superacids benefit from the synergistic effect of high acid concentrations (~3.33 mmol/g), superacidity (determined by 31P solid-state NMR, Hammett indicators, and potentiometric titration), as well as unique shape-selective confinement for methanol into the ordered and uniform micropores, which targeted the activation of methanol to prevent the occurring of an inverse reaction in the reactions. The UiO-66 solid superacids show important application potentials in the area of biodiesel production in the industry.

Ko, Myoung-Soo published the artcileDiscrimination methods for diesel origin by analyzing fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) composition in diesel-contaminated soil, Name: Methyl docosanoate, the main research area is diesel contaminated soil fatty acid methyl ester component analysis.

The biodiesel containing fatty acid Me esters (FAMEs) are blended with refined diesel products. Here, we evaluate relative FAME composition ratio as a potential index to discriminate the pollution origin in diesel-contaminated soil. Artificially contaminated soil was prepared to mimic the release of petroleum products using four different refined diesels; in addition, the contaminated soil was put under natural weathering conditions. The variations in the relative FAME composition ratio was compared with those of the corresponding diesel origin using principal component anal. (PCA) for 60 days. All soil samples could be classified into four groups according to diesel origin using two principal components. The proposed method can be used to discriminate the specific diesel pollution origin in contaminated soils.

Zhou, Guang-Jie published the artcileAccidental Spill of Palm Stearin Poses Relatively Short-Term Ecological Risks to a Tropical Coastal Marine Ecosystem, Product Details of C23H46O2, the main research area is palm stearin spill seawater pollution marine ecosystem risk assessment.

In early August 2017, a serious palm stearin pollution accident occurred in the Pearl River Estuary, South China. While there were already several palm oil related spills around the world, ecol. effects and risks of such accidents to coastal marine environments remain largely unknown. In this study, the authors found that all seawater and sediment samples collected from six coastal sites were heavily contaminated by palm stearin within one week of the accident, and their levels significantly decreased to pre-accident levels after four months. Waterborne exposure to palm stearin resulted in growth inhibition to four microalgal species (range of EC50: 9.9-212.6 mg/L) and acute mortality to four invertebrate species (range of LC50: 4.6-409.3 mg/L), while adverse chronic effects of palm stearin on the survival, development and fecundity of Tigriopus japonicus, and on the growth of Oryzias melastigma were observed Based on these results, its interim predicted no effect concentration was determined as 0.141 mg/L. The hazard quotient of palm stearin greatly exceeded one in all sites in August 2017 but returned to be <1 at four sites and <2 at the other two sites in Nov. 2017, indicating that its ecol. risk was relatively transient and short-term. de Aquino, Adriana M. published the artcileEvaluation of molecular properties of humic acids from vermicompost by 13 C-CPMAS-NMR spectroscopy and thermochemolysis-GC-MS, Safety of Methyl docosanoate, the main research area is carbon vermicompost humic acid thermochemolysis GCMS CPMAS NMR spectroscopy.

The mol. characteristics of different vermicomposts, produced with variable rates of cattle manure and cotton residues, and of related humic acids were determined by 13C-CPMAS NMR and Off-line pyrolysis THM-GC-MS. The analyses highlighted a composition of mature vermicomposts based on differential amounts of lignocellulosic fraction and alkyl compounds inherited from original biomasses, thus revealing a decrease of overall hydrophobic character at increasing amounts of cotton input. The evaluation of mol. parameters derived from both solid state NMR spectra and from the specific biomarkers released by thermochemolysis suggested that the humification process was mainly characterized by the selective preservation of specific lignin derivatives The potential bioactive properties of humic acids were hence evaluated in a bioassays test on maize seedlings. The humic extracts showed a differential response in root growth-promoting effect, depending on the specific mol. features. The higher bioactivity found in humic components isolated from vermicompost with no or low addition of cotton residues, supported the role of the overall hydrophobic character and of the large content of bioavailable lignin units and nitrogen moieties. These results confirm that the combination of solid state NMR and thermochemolysis are valuable and efficient tools to assess the mol. quality of natural organic matter. The detailed mol. characterization of compost materials may hence represent a useful requirement to select the most suitable application of bulk biomasses and derived fractions for soil organic matter managements.

Abstract: This study evaluated the potential of Punica granatum peel ethanol extract (PPEE) in attenuating the liver and kidney tissue injury induced by vancomycin (VM) treatment in rats. Fifty rats were distributed equally into five groups: control group, PPEE-administered group (100 mg/kg BW/day for 2 wk; orally), VM-treated group (443.6 mg/kg BW, every alternate day for 2 wk; i.p.), pre-treated group, and concomitant-treated group. The biochem. response and the histopathol. of the hepatic and renal tissue of the treated animals were assessed. The results showed that VM treatment induced substantial hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity, evidenced by a significant elevation in tissue injury and lipid oxidative (malondialdehyde) and inflammatory response (C-reactive protein) biomarkers, with lowered antioxidants and protein levels. Addnl., VM treatment induced various morphol., cytotoxic, vascular, and inflammatory perturbations as well as upregulation in the immune-expression of Caspase-3 and downregulation of BCL-2. Moreover, PPEE co-treatment was found to reduce the VM-induced toxicity by protecting the tissue against reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated oxidative damage, and inflammation as well as hinder the apoptotic cell death by modulating the expression of apoptosis-related proteins. Thus, we conclude that the PPEE administration showed more restoring efficacy when administered prior to VM medication.
