This work presents the use of a formal thermodn. model together with UNIFAC activity coefficients model, without any further adjustable parameter, to predict the surface tension of biodiesel fuels based on the equality of chem. potentials between the vapor-liquid interface and liquid bulk. The biodiesel samples included in this work were reported previously in the open literature. They were produced from vegetable oils such as: canola, coconut, corn, cottonseed, hazelnut, lard, palm, peanut, rapeseed, safflower, soybean, sunflower, and Walnut. Surface tension values for 18 samples of binary, ternary and quaternary mixtures of fatty acid Et esters (FAEEs) at T = 298.15 were predicted with an average absolute relative deviation (AARD) = 1.39%. Surface tension values for 31 biodiesel samples composed by fatty acid Me esters (FAMEs) were also predicted at temperatures from 303.15 K to 353.15 K. The AARD value obtained for the 78 exptl. points of biodiesel samples was 1.86% which shows a very good agreement with exptl. measurements. In the UNIFAC method, predictions of surface tension values for the mixtures are based on the knowledge of the values of the surface tension for the pure components; these values were obtained from different sources. Also, two simple mixing rules on mass and mole fraction basis were used to predict the surface tension of biodiesel fuels. The AARD value obtained from the comparison between exptl. and calculated values were: 2.77% and 2.91% for mixing rules on mass and mole fractions, resp.

The current study aimed to determine the phytochems. and anti-breast cancer potential of Sphaeranthus indicus. S. indicus flowers were extracted with methanol followed by fractionation using n-hexane. For the chem. composition of n-hexane fraction, qual. phytochem. and GC-MS anal. were performed. The anti-proliferative activity was measured by MTT assay, whereas, cytotoxic and proapoptotic effects in MCF-7 (breast cancer) cells were determined using propidium iodide, 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole, dichlorofluorescin diacetate, and JC-1 staining through fluorescent microscopy. The phytochem. anal. indicated presence of phytosterols, oils and resins in the nhexane fraction. GC-MS anal. showed that n-hexane fraction comprises of 11 compounds including Me esters of caprylic acid, myristic acid, pentadecanoic acid, palmitic acid, margaric acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, elaidic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid and behanic acid. The tested fraction showed remarkable cytotoxic activity against breast cancer (MCF-7) cells while it was found less toxic towards non-cancerous (BHK-21) cells. Furthermore, morphol. assessment through fluorescent microscopy revealed cytotoxic and apoptotic effects by improved cell membrane permeability, increased reactive oxygen species level, compromised mitochondrial activity and condensation of chromatin network. Conclusion: The n-hexane fraction of S. indicus contains phytosterols, oils and fatty acid Me esters and produced apoptotic effect against breast cancer cells.

The chloroform extract exhibited a good cytotoxic activity against all cell lines as compared to other solvent extracts HPLC anal. revealed the occurrence of gallic acid content of 0.102±0.23 mg/10 mg of dry whole fruit extract, while 10 mg of dry seed extract contained only 0.022±0.12 mg of gallic acid content. Likewise, rutin content was observed to be 0.224±0.31 mg and 0.1916±0.82 mg/10 mg of dry whole fruit and seed extract, resp. Non-alc. steatohepatitis (NASH) is a common type of metabolic liver disease which is characterized by fatty changes associated with hepatocyte injury, lobular inflammation, and/or liver fibrosis. Nanoemulsions are kinetically stable colloidal systems characterized by small droplet size. Hemp seed oil is a natural oil derived from Cannabis sativa seeds. The current study was designed to formulate nanoemulsion preparations of hemp seed oil with promising enhanced biol. activity against high fat (HF) diet induced NASH in rats. Four nanoemulsion formulas (NEFs) were formulated based on high-pressure homogenization technique and evaluated for droplet size, zeta potential (ZP), polydispersity index (PDI), elec. conductivity, pH, and viscosity, as well as the preparation stability. The best NEF was selected to perform an in vivo rat study; selection was based on the smallest droplet size and highest phys. stability. Results showed that NEF#4 showed the best physiochem. characters among the other preparations Twenty male rats were assigned to four groups as follows: normal, NASH control, NASH + hemp seed oil and NASH + hemp seed oil NEF4. The rats were tested for body weight (BWt) change, insulin resistance (IR) and hepatic pathol. The hemp seed NEF#4 protected against NASH progression in rats and decreased the % of BWt gain compared to the original Hemp seed oil. NEF#4 of Hemp seed oil showed greater protective activity against exptl. NASH and IR in rats. Hence, we can consider the nanoemulsion preparations as a useful tool for enhancing the biol. action of the hemp seed oil, and further studies are warranted for application of this technique for preparing natural oils aiming at enhancing their activities.

In this study the continuous production of fatty acid Me esters (FAME) and triacetin from crambe oil and Me acetate (MA), without the use of catalysts, was investigated. The effects of the oil to MA mass ratio, reaction temperature, addition of water (in the oil) and a two-step reaction on the formation of the products were determined The results indicated that increasing the availability of MA in the reaction medium had little influence on the FAME yield. An increase in the temperature enhanced the formation of esters and triacetin in the initial minutes of the reaction; however, as the reaction proceeded thermal decomposition was observed, mainly at 350°C. The sample composition revealed a high level of decomposition of linoleate and linolenate esters. A higher FAME yield was obtained with 10 wt% of water added to the oil (�3%), as well as with the application of a two-step reaction (�8%).

Dementia is a disease in which memory, thinking, and cognitive skills are impaired, with Alzheimer′s being the most common type of dementia. Brassica nigra is useful for eliminating memory loss in traditional Persian medicine. This study aims to examine the effect of B. nigra fixed oil (BNO) on the changes in memory caused by β-amyloid. This research was conducted on 42 Wistar rats divided into 7 groups (n = 6) including (1) control (received vehicle), (2) the group receiving BNO (925 and 462.5 mg/kg), (4) sham group (5) Alzheimer group (receiving 50 ng/μl/side β-amyloid in CA1 area of hippocampus) and 2 groups receiving β-amyloid along with two different doses of BNO. The daily gavage of BNO was done 2 to 21 days post amyloid injection. The spatial memory was evaluated in Morris water maze from day 21 to 26. The results of this study revealed that the gavage of BNO (925 mg/kg) to rats receiving β-amyloid, as compared to those receiving β-amyloid alone, significantly decreased the traveled distance and the required time for finding hidden platform on the training days and increased the time of presence in the target quadrant on the test days. The anal. of BNO with GC-MS revealed that Erucic acid (24.79%) and 11-Eicosenoic acid (17.23%) had the highest content in the BNO. Regarding the presence of unsaturated fatty acids, it is likely that the consumption of BNO can play an important role in the prevention of memory degradation which warrants further clin. studies.

Solid acids have been widely used as heterogeneous catalysts in developing green and sustainable chem. However, it remains a challenge to improve the mass transport properties and acid strength of solid acids simultaneously. Herein, we report a class of two dimensional (2D) layered hybrid solid acids with outstanding mass transfer and extremely high acid strength by incorporating sulfonated polymers in-between montmorillonite layers. The 2D layered structure and broad distribution of pore sizes allow for highly efficient mass transport of substrate mols. into and out of the solid acids. The acid strength of these solid acids was found to be stronger than that of 100% H2SO4, H3PW12O40 and any other reported solid acids to date, as determined by 1H and 31P solid-state NMR. These 2D solid acids show extraordinary catalytic performance in biomass conversion to fuels, superior to that of H3PW12O40, HCl and H2SO4. Theor. calculations and control experiments reveal that H-bond based interactions between the polymer and montmorillonite facilitate the unusually high acid strengths found in these samples.

Oil nyamplung in this study had amounted to 27,498% FFA content, therefore, needs a pretreatment process consisting of degumming to remove gum, esterification and neutralization to lower FFA <2% so that the oil can be resumed in the transesterification process. The purpose of this research to study the effect of microwave power, time and temperature of the reaction to yield biodiesel, identify Me ester in the product and assess the kinetics of making biodiesel from oil nyamplung using microwave irradiation Transesterification is done by using a variation of power (100, 200 and 400W), variations of time (5, 7, 10, 12 and 15 min) and variations of temperature (50, 55, 60, 65 and 70° C). The results showed the best conditions using microwave power of 200 W at 65°C for 5 min, maximum yield of 84,62% biodiesel and biodiesel phys. properties meet the standard of SNI 04-7182-2006. GCMS anal. showed that the Me ester of biodiesel oil nyamplung is 30,23% Me oleic, 25,76% Me linolelaidate, 19.21% Me palmitate, 15,75% Me stearic, 2,11% Me lignocerate, 1,41%, Me eicosanoic, 0,54% Me behenate and 0,37% Me palmitoleic. Transesterification reaction rate constant of first order at a temperature of 55°C, 65°C and 70°C is 0,395 min-1, 0,405 min-1 and 0,412 min-1. Pre exponential factor (A) amounted to 1,0161 L / mol min; the activation energy (Ea) 2579,834 J/mol and the rate of transesterification reaction (rt) = 1,0161e(2579,834/RT)[ME]. The results of this study showed that the rate of reaction using microwave irradiation higher and the reaction time becomes 1/6 times faster with activation energy value is smaller than with conventional methods. A new protocol for biodiesel production is proposed, based on a binary ZnO/TBAI (TBAI = tetrabutylammonium iodide) catalytic system. Zinc oxide acts as a heterogeneous, bifunctional Lewis acid/base catalyst, while TBAI plays the role of phase transfer agent. Being composed by the bulk form powders, the whole catalyst system proved to be easy to use, without requiring nano-structuration or tedious and costly preparation or pre-activation procedures. In addition, due to the amphoteric properties of ZnO, the catalyst can simultaneously promote transesterification and esterification processes, thus becoming applicable to common vegetable oils (e.g., soybean, jatropha, linseed, etc.) and animal fats (lard and fish oil), but also to waste lipids such as cooking oils (WCOs), highly acidic lipids from oil industry processing, and lipid fractions of municipal sewage sludge. Reusability of the catalyst system together with kinetic (Ea) and thermodn. parameters of activation (ΔGâ€?and ΔHâ€? are also studied for transesterification reaction.
