This blend was attractive to C. eriosoma males in the field and in a laboratory flight tunnel. 5Z-Dodecenyl acetate and 7Z-dodecenyl alc. inhibited this response in the field. C. eriosoma Was also attracted to the 5:1 blend of 7Z-dodecenyl acetate and 9Z-tetradecenyl acetate reported as the pheromone of C. chalcites in the western Palearctic. Specialist receptor cells for all 5 compounds were found in male antennal sensilla in both species.

NO+ chem.-ionization mass spectrometry is a highly efficient tool for locating the C:C double bond in long-chain monounsaturated alcs., acetates, and aldehydes Me(CH2)xCH:CH(CH2)yR (R = CH2OH, CH2OAc, CHO). The double bond assignment is mostly provided by the presence of an acylium ion Cx+2H2x+3O+ formed from the alkyl side of the mol. When the double bond is close to the terminal oxygen function (y ≤ 2), a Cy+3H2y+4NO+ ion may also be used as a complementary diagnostic ion. In the case of di- or triethylenic compounds, an acylium ion is also formed which characterizes the external (unconjugated) double-bond position. From the observed strong influence of the sample pressure on the formation of the acylium ion and results of MS/MS experiments, two mechanisms are proposed to explain the origin of this diagnostic ion. Although some instrument dependence may not be excluded, the method is optimally applicable to moderate sample loads (20-200 ng).

The binding of 24 derivatives of Cydia pomonella sex pheromone (dodecanol framework with 0, 1, or 2 conjugated double bonds at different positions of the aliphatic chain) and SDS to unmodified, acylated, alkylated, and esterified β-lactoglobulin (BLG) was studied by fluorescence spectrophotometry. Their apparent dissociation constants were in the range 0.2-0.9 × 10-6 M (apparent molar ratio ca. 1). Dodecyl acetate and SDS displayed the highest affinity for BLG, when (E,E)-6,8-dodecadienyl acetate and (E,E)-7,9-dodecadienyl acetate did not bind to BLG in the applied conditions. The apparent dissociation constants of derivatives unconstrained by conjugated double bonds did not differ. The BLG binding affinity of other studied pheromone derivatives depends on the number of double bonds, their position in the aliphatic chain, and their isomerization (Z or E). Since, neither (E)-3-dodecenyl acetate nor (Z,E)-8,10-dodecadienyl acetate nor retinol binding constants changed during their simultaneous binding by BLG, it was concluded that they bind in different binding sites on the BLG mol. The chem. modifications that increased the hydrophobicity of BLG prevented its binding of the apolar ligand pheromone mols.

Protection of beneficial invertebrates, achieved by replacement of Decis (I) and Me 605 Sp (parathion-methyl; II) in Eupoecilia ambiguella control by male confusion by broadcasting 50 g Z-9-dodecenyl acetate (III)/ha in 500 dispensers, each containing 0.1 g III, in May and July (for both pest generations), was examined in vineyards during 3 yr. III increased the number of individuals and species of higher spiders and Chalcidoidea for which I was more toxic than II. III increased the invasion of Sparganothis pilleriana larvae by parasitoids. The increase of Typhlodromus pyri under the III treatment led to elimination of wintering Panonychus ulmi eggs which were especially numerous under the I treatment. III was harmless for Lycosa agrestis for which I was 100% lethal in the laboratory and for Trechus quadristriatus, Forficularia auricularia, and Chrysoperla carnea for which II was 80-100% lethal.

(Z)-11-Tetradecenyl acetate (Z11 TDA) produced the highest responses of Z. hippocrepidis antennae. On the other hand, the antennae of male Z. filipendulae appeared to be more sensitive to (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate. Moreover, Z11 TDA evokes sexual behavior in male Z. hippocrepidis and attracts males of this species in the field.

Gas chromatog. and mass spectral anal. of extracts of female sex pheromone glands showed the presence of Z9-12:Ac, tetradecan-1-ol (14:OH), (E)-11-tetradecen-1-ol (E11-14:OH), Z11-14:OH, hexadecan-1-ol, and hexadecan-1-ol acetate in a ratio of 0.6:200:37:100:140:35. In field tests, Z9-12:Ac and Z11-14:OH together were required for trap catch, and addition of Z11-14:Al, E11-14:OH, 14:OH, or (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-ol acetate did not increase catch. Ratios in rubber spectra of 0.5:99.5 to 1.5:98.5 (Z9-12:Ac/Z11-14:OH) captured the most males and captures were statistically equivalent for dosages of 10-1000 μg/rubber septum. Traps baited with the synthetic lure produced better catches than those baited with females.
