Struble, D. L. published the artcileSex pheromone components of an Alberta population of European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (HBN.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Formula: C14H26O2, the publication is Canadian Entomologist (1987), 119(3), 291-9, database is CAplus.

The sex pheromone components of European corn borer, O. nubilalis, from southern Alberta were identified in washes and extracts of abdomen tips from calling female moths. This is a Z strain population as (Z)-11- [20711-10-8] and (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate  [33189-72-9] were isolated in a ratio 100:1.4, and a corresponding synthetic blend in a ratio of 100:3 attracted males in the field. Dodecyl alc.  [112-53-8], tetradecyl alc.  [112-72-1] and acetate [638-59-5], and (Z)-11-tetradecenol  [34010-15-6] were also identified, but none of these components nor other pheromone-like mono-unsaturated C10 to C16 acetates had any effect on increasing the trap catches of male moths under field conditions. However, the addition of (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate  [16974-11-1] or (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate  [16725-53-4] to the synthetic pheromone blend significantly reduced the capture of male moths, even though these compounds were not detectable in the female extracts Pheromone blends used for monitoring the Z strain of the European corn borer must be essentially free, ca<0.1%, of these acetates. A com. available, sticky-surface, delta-type trap was the most satisfactory of several tested for capturing moths under prairie conditions.

The presence of cyano groups in the stationary phase may provide useful selective interactions during separation In capillary gas chromatog., the full utility of such interactions will be evident when the columns show high efficiency, good deactivation, high thermal stability, and reproducibility in retention characteristics. Columns that fulfill these requirements were prepared Fused silica capillaries were treated with HCl, silanized at a high temperature with cyclic cyanopropylsiloxane, and statically coated with cyanopropylsilicone gum, which was finally immobilized by in situ crosslinking. Vulcanization is normally inhibited by cyanopropyl groups, but a certain percent of tolyl groups in the gum made crosslinking possible. The usefulness of the cyanosilicone columns is demonstrated by the separation of several samples such as fatty acid Me esters and pheromones.

Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata published new progress about 16974-11-1. 16974-11-1 belongs to esters-buliding-blocks, auxiliary class Aliphatic Chain, name is (Z)-Dodec-9-en-1-yl acetate, and the molecular formula is C14H26O2, Formula: C14H26O2.

Charmillot, P. J. published the artcileThe influence of sex gland components on mating by the summerfruit tortrix moth, Adoxophyes orana, in the laboratory, Formula: C14H26O2, the publication is Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata (1985), 39(3), 233-9, database is CAplus.

Couples of A. orana were isolated for 1 wk in small 1.25 L rearing boxes in the laboratory with sex gland components deposited on rubber caps. At the end of the trails females were dissected and spermatophores counted. Reduction of mating increased with the dose of a mixture of the attractant components Z-9-tetradecenyl acetate  [16725-53-4] and Z-11-tetradecenyl acetate  [20711-10-8] (9:1), but decreased with increasing d. of 1-5, 10 and 20 couples per box. Each of the attractant components alone produced a mating inhibition equal to the mixture The minor components Z-9-dodecenyl acetate  [16974-11-1] and dodecyl acetate  [112-66-3] had approx. the same effect as the main components, but tetradecyl acetate  [638-59-5] and Z-11-tetradecenyl alc.  [34010-15-6] had no effect. Identical trials conducted on a strain of summerfruit moth newly introduced to rearing showed that 10 times less product was needed to achieve the same degree of mating inhibition as with the old strain. With adaptation to laboratory conditions the proportion of unmated females diminished and repeated matings occurred more frequently. To achieve meaningful results one must work with material from regularly renewed rearings, or better with the direct descendants of individuals from orchards. The results are discussed in relation to mating disruption of A. orana in orchards.

Muell: chemical composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, Category: esters-buliding-blocks, the publication is Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plant Sciences (2012), 34(3&4), 132-144, database is CAplus.

The present work was carried out to determine the chem. composition and to evaluate the antioxidant and the antimicrobial proprieties of the essential oil extracted from the different plant parts of Atriplex inflata F. Muell. In addition to essential oil, some organic extracts were also tested. Based on the GC/MS anal., difference in composition between leaves, fruits and roots was noticed. The antioxidant capacity of the volatile fractions and the organic extracts was determined by the inhibition of DPPH and ABTS+ radical forms. A pos. activity was observed in volatile fraction of leaves. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by the determination of the minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) using the ethanolic and the acetonic extracts and the volatile fractions from fruits, leaves and roots. Bacteria and yeasts were found to be more sensitive towards volatile fraction extracted from the A. Inflata leaves.

Witzgall, P. published the artcileSex pheromone of grape berry moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), Recommanded Product: (Z)-Dodec-9-en-1-yl acetate, the publication is Environmental Entomology (2000), 29(3), 433-436, database is CAplus.

Pheromone gland extracts of grape berry moth females, Endopiza viteana Clemens, contain the main pheromone component, Z9-12Ac, at ≈1.2 ng per female, together with both geometric isomers of 11-14Ac, and a number of saturated acetates and alcs. of the chain length 12-16. The analogous alc., Z9-12OH, was found in some gland extracts Trap capture of males was significantly increased by adding 0.5 or 2 μg of Z11-14Ac to 10 μg of the main compound, Z9-12Ac; whereas, adding 0.5 or 2 μg of E11-14Ac had no significant effect. In contrast, the addition of 5% Z9-12OH to the main compound resulted in a strong reduction in trap capture. Traps baited with a blend of Z9-12Ac and its geometric isomer, E9-12Ac, which was not detected in gland extracts, were significantly less attractive than traps baited with blends of Z9-12Ac and Z11-14Ac. Knowledge of pheromone components and antagonists is essential for development of the mating disruption technique. The compounds identified in E. viteana are behaviorally active in the three most important tortricid pests of grape, Vitis vinifera (L.), in Europe. It may thus be possible to use a single blend of synthetic pheromone for control of several species.

Chem.-ionization spectra were recorded on a VG MM-12 single-focusing mass spectrometer using a combined electron-impact/chem.-ionization source. Samples were introduced via a gas chromatograph using a glass column packed with SE-30 stationary phase. The model compounds were (Z)-Me(CH2)nCH:CH(CH2)mOAc (n = 1 or 3, m = 4, 8, or 10) and its E isomer.

Wakamura, Sadao published the artcileSex pheromone of the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) of a “Far East” population from Okinawa, Japan, Safety of (Z)-Dodec-9-en-1-yl acetate, the publication is Applied Entomology and Zoology (2021), 56(1), 19-25, database is CAplus.

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is native to the Americas and has recently invaded Okinawa, Japan via Africa, South Asia and China. Gas chromatog./mass spectrometry analyses of hexane extracts of 100 abdominal glands of Okinawan females revealed six candidate compounds for sex pheromone, (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:Ac, ca. 6 ng/female), (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate, (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate (Z7-12:Ac), (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate, and (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-ol at the ratio of 100:10:1.3:0.90:0.13:1.8, resp. In Okinawa, only small numbers of males were captured with the original blend of these compounds However, much more males were attracted to a 100:3 blend of Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac that had been suggested by others to be the most effective blend in a Florida population. In another test in Okinawa, even more males were captured with a 100:1 blend of these compounds than with a 100:3 blend. Significant numbers of males of other moths, Mythimna loreyi (Duponchel) and Chrysodeixis eriosoma (Doubleday), were also attracted to blends of Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac when the ratio of the latter to the former compound was increased from 100:1 to 100:10. Based on these results we concluded that the most powerful as well as convenient sex pheromone formulation to monitor S. frugiperda populations in Okinawa was a 100:1 blend of Z9-14:Ac and Z7-12:Ac.

Twelve products related to the sex pheromone main components (Z)-9- and (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:Ac and Z11-14:Ac, resp.), were identified in female pheromone gland extracts of the laboratory-reared summerfruit tortrix moth, A. orana. These are the geometric isomers and the alcs. of the main components, (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, and saturated acetates of 12-22 carbons. The ratios of Z9-14:Ac to Z11-14:Ac in individuals varied from 3.5:1 to 11:1 with an average of 6.2; their total added up to 462 ng/female with an average of 182 ng for 2- to 7-day-old individuals. No qual. or quant. differences were observed between laboratory and field insects. Z9-14:Ac, Z11-14:Ac and the corresponding alcs. were also found in female effluvia. Addition of either of the 2 alcs. to a blend of the 2 acetates augmented trap catch in the field. The same was true for (Z)-9,(E)-12-tetradecadienyl acetate which was not detected in gland extracts
