Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are sustainable rod-shaped nanoparticles able to adsorb at oil-water interfaces to produce highly stable Pickering emulsions with enhanced mech. properties. Polymerization of the CNC-stabilized monomer droplets is investigated in detail to elucidate the synthesis mechanism of both micro- and nanoparticles of latex in relationship with the initial sizes of the droplets. It is shown in this study that unmodified CNCs, used as a sole stabilizer, are efficient to produce both monomer-in-water Pickering emulsion and nanocomposite latex particles with controlled dimensions. For the initial liquid emulsion of styrene, two populations of droplets were observed: micrometric droplets with diameters that decrease down to 5 μm with increasing CNC concentrations, and nanometric droplets with a diameter distribution ranging from 500 nm to 2 μm for all CNC concentrations It leads to two distinct populations of polystyrene latex particles by polymerization in aqueous dispersed media, i.e. microparticles of 5-18 μm and nanoparticles with an average diameter below 1 μm. The polymerization of various monomers, i.e. styrene, lauryl methacrylate, isobornyl acrylate, Bu methacrylate, and Me methacrylate, in the presence of different initiators indicated that the solubility of the monomer in the aqueous continuous phase is the key parameter to tune the size distribution of the latex particles. Background: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease of a complex etiol. in which genetic, environmental and personality variables are important factors determining the development of complicated strategies related to coping with stress and temperament traits. Our thesis is that coping styles in asthmatic patients are modified by the environment (chronic inflammation and stress) which affects individual temperament traits in the course of time. Thus, patient age is one of factors which determine the clin. image of asthma and its natural history. The aim of the study was to evaluate the variables describing stress coping styles and temperament in young (18 to 35 years old) and elderly asthmatics (aged ≥60 years). A total of 200 patients, 104 elderly and 96 young asthmatics were enrolled in the study. Apart from medical examination, the following tests were performed in all subjects: the Formal Characteristics of Behavior- Temperament Inventory (FCB-TI), Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) Scale. Results: Elderly patients with asthma exhibited higher intensity of anxiety as a trait, a higher level of depression and experienced dyspnea, as well as higher levels of stress coping strategies such as Avoidance-Oriented Coping (AOC), Distraction Seeking (DS) and Social Diversion (SD) compared to young asthmatics. In elderly patients, Perseverance and Sensory Sensitivity traits have been observed to decline with the duration and development of asthma at later life stages as opposed to young asthmatics, in whom these temperament characteristics are elevated. Asthma is a heterogeneous disease of a complex etiopathogenesis that has a complex interplay with mental health. The present study confirms a relationship between age and stress coping strategies as well as temperament traits.

Methods: The BADA (blood pressure levels, clin. features and markers of subclin. cardiovascular damage of asthma patients) study is aimed to evaluate the prevalence of the cardiovascular comorbidities of asthma and their impact on the clin. outcome. The main exclusion criteria were the presence of other respiratory diseases, current smoking, any contraindication to ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Results: The overall percentage of asthmatics having also hypertension was 75% (30 patients) vs. 45% (18 patients) of the control group (p: 0.012). Reduced level of FEV1 (but not inhaled steroid therapy) was associated to newly-diagnosed hypertension (p: 0.0002), higher day SBP levels (p: 0.003), higher day DBP levels (p: 0.03), higher 24 h-SBP levels (p: 0.005) and higher 24h-DBP levels (p: 0.03). The regression anal. performed taking into account sex, age, diabetes, fasting glucose, and body mass index confirms the independent role played by asthma: odds ratio (OR): 3.66 (CI: 1.29-11.1). Conclusions: hypertension is highly prevalent in asthma; the use of ABPM has allowed the detection of a considerable number of unrecognized hypertensives.

We aimed to investigate the associations of previous influenza/URI with the susceptibility of COVID-19 patients compared to that of non-COVID-19 participants. A nationwide COVID-19 cohort database was collected by the Korea National Health Insurance Corporation. A total of 8,070 COVID-19 patients (1 Jan. 2020 through 4 June 2020) were matched with 32,280 control participants. Severe COVID-19 morbidity was defined based on the treatment histories of the intensive care unit, invasive ventilation, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and death. The susceptibility/morbidity/mortality associated with prior histories of 1-14, 1-30, 1-90, 15-45, 15-90, and 31-90 days before COVID-19 onset were analyzed using conditional/unconditional logistic regression. Prior influenza infection was related to increased susceptibility to COVID-19 (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval] = 3.07 [1.61-5.85] for 1-14 days and 1.91 [1.54-2.37] for 1-90 days). Prior URI was also associated with increased susceptibility to COVID-19 (6.95 [6.38-7.58] for 1-14 days, 4.99 [4.64-5.37] for 1-30 days, and 2.70 [2.55-2.86] for 1-90 days). COVID-19 morbidity was pos. associated with influenza (3.64 [1.55-9.21] and 3.59 [1.42-9.05]) and URI (1.40 [1.11-1.78] and 1.28 [1.02-1.61]) at 1-14 days and 1-30 days, resp. Overall, previous influenza/URI did not show an association with COVID-19 mortality. Previous influenza/URI histories were associated with increased COVID-19 susceptibility and morbidity. Our findings indicate why controlling influenza/URI is important during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on treatment of ACO with LAMA, compared with placebo or blank, were reviewed. Six RCTs (enrolling 1151 participants) met the inclusion criteria. LAMA showed significant effects on forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) (WMD 98.31 mL, 95% CI 94.32 to 102.30 mL), forced vital capacity (FVC) (WMD 128.00 mL, 95% CI 121.89 to 134.12 mL), peak expiratory flow (PEF) (WMD 20.60 L/min, 95% CI 19.90 to 21.29 L/min), and rescue medicine use (WMD -0.67 puffs/day, 95% CI -1.11 to -0.23 puffs/day). The addition of LAMA significantly improved lung function and rescue medicine use in patients with asthma-COPD overlap.

This study investigates the elemental composition and surface morphol. of solid tribochem. films formed on steel surfaces. The reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) method was used to synthesize nine different metal-free polymers, which were blended into com. base oils. The polymers were either homopolymers of dodecyl methacrylate and ethylhexyl methacrylate or were co-polymers of these monomers with six polar monomers. After tribol. testing at 100°C using the ball-on-flat geometry, the resulting tribochem. films were imaged using SEM and optical microscopy. The resulting tribochem. films have thicknesses around 50-100 nm. Two of the films corresponding to small (P1-imidazole-containing copolymer) and large (P3-less polar homopolymer) wear were cross-sectioned using focused ion beam and analyzed for elemental composition using energy-dispersive X-Ray mapping. Oxygen and nitrogen enrichment was observed, consistent with the relative chem. composition of the precursor polymers. Transmission electron microscopy evidence suggests that at the worn surface, some organic elements penetrate or are mixed into the steel substrate giving an interlocking appearance. The two samples examined with TEM showed that P1 tribofilm is diffused or mixed with the steel substrate more so than P3, suggesting a stronger affinity and contact during tribofilm formation.

The friction properties of a dilute solution of block copolymer additives in poly-α-olefin (PAO) confined between mica surfaces were investigated using the surface forces apparatus Friction measurements were made for poly(11-acrylamidoundecanoic acid)-block-poly(alkyl methacrylate)-block-poly(11-acrylamidoundecanoic acid) with an alkyl chain length of C12 (A5L946A5) in the poly(alkyl methacrylate) blocks. The results were compared to those for a PAO solution of a similar triblock copolymer with an alkyl chain length of C18 (A5S992A5) examined in our previous work (Yamada et al., Langmuir 2015). The friction coefficient μ for A5L946A5/PAO was approx. 0.5, which was one or two orders of magnitude larger than that for A5S992A5/PAO (μ of 0.002-0.039). Detailed anal. of the dynamic thickness and contact geometry enabled us to investigate the difference in the friction reduction abilities of the two additives. A5L946A5 has a high affinity to PAO and the mols. have expanded conformation in PAO; extensive chain entanglement effect results in the formation of a thick and viscous lubricant layer, which gives rise to high friction. On the other hand, A5S992A5 has low affinity to PAO, and the shrunken A5S992A5 mols. adsorbed on the surfaces form a rigid slip plane at the interface, which gives rise to low friction. Our results provide insights into the oil/additive combinations used for low friction in oil-based lubrication.

Deuterium isotopic labeling has been used to prepare two chem. identical yet isotopically distinguishable poly(lauryl methacrylate)-poly(Me methacrylate) (PLMA-PMMA) diblock copolymer colloids by polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) directly in an alkane solvent. Mol. exchange should be detectable by performing small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements on the dispersions. SANS measurements were performed on fully hydrogenous PLMA39-PMMA57 and deuterated core PLMA39-P(MMA-d8)57 colloids. They were mixed in equal amounts and heated to determine if mol. exchange occurred. PISA syntheses are often thermally initiated, and diblock copolymers self-assemble at elevated temperature, making this an important parameter to study. Exptl. data for the mixture were compared to predicted curves for exchanged and non-exchanged colloids. The scattering of a mixture of fully hydrogenous and deuterated core copolymers does not disappear upon mol. exchange, due to the remaining contrast between the stabilizer and the core and solvent even after the cores fully exchange. By simultaneously fitting the SANS data from dispersions before mixing and using these parameters to constrain fitting the SANS data of mixtures, the mol. exchange between diblock copolymer micelles upon heating is clearly observed

Glycoprotein detection holds great potential for early diagnosis of diverse diseases. For this purpose, the combination of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor and mol. imprinting has attracted increasing attention. Nonetheless, the recently common imprinted films fabricated on QCM electrode are thick and rigid, lacking flexibility in aqueous phase. Alternatively, small mols. immobilized on the electrode to construct mol. scale film could address this problem, while stabilization of the imprinted sites remains challenging. Herein, a co-assembly complex was obtained by the mixture of template and multifunctional oligomer, which was then immobilized on the amino-modified transducer surface through epoxy-amino reaction to form a protein-imprinted film. Afterward, the remaining epoxy groups in oligomer chains were cross-linked to conserve and stabilize the orientation of imprinted sites after template elution. Template rebinding tests show that cross-linked film has much higher imprinting factors than that of the non-cross-linked counterpart. Furthermore, control proteins that are distinct in properties and structures were employed to demonstrate the selectivity of this approach, and the imprinted assay reveals high affinity and specificity towards template protein.
