Background: Maternal mental illness is a significant public health problem during the perinatal period and beyond. Little is known about how social determinants of health (SDOH) affect maternal mental health. Materials and Methods: We used cross-sectional data from the 2016 to 2017 National Survey of Children’s Health with 19,127 mothers of a nationally representative sample of U.S. children aged 0-5. We estimated the prevalence of poor reported mental health (reported as fair/poor) among mothers with children aged 0-5 by SDOH. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine factors associated with poor maternal mental health. Results: Approximately 4.5% of mothers with children aged 0-5 reported having poor mental health in 2016-2017. Postadjustment and mothers’ poor mental health were significantly associated with age (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 18-20 years: 2.77, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.35-5.67; 21-24 years AOR: 2.14, 95% CI: 1.22-3.73, and 30-34 years AOR: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.13-3.43), U.S.-born status (AOR: 2.31, 95% CI: 1.48-3.63), poor physical health (AOR: 8.69, 95% CI: 5.81-13.02), having a child with a special health care need (AOR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.03-2.64), experiencing food insecurity (afford enough food, yet, unhealthy [AOR: 2.74, 95% CI: 1.59-4.70] and sometimes/often not afford enough food [AOR: 3.20, 95% CI: 1.76-5.84]), and low social capital (AOR: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.04-3.73). Conclusion: Mothers with children aged 0-5 who had poor physical health and experienced food insecurity were at the greatest risk for poor mental health. Integrated perinatal and behavioral health models, screening, and referrals may help identify and treat mothers experiencing these issues.

The aromatic perennial plant Alpinia zerumbet (Pers.) Burtt & Smith (Zingiberaceae) is widely distributed in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of Japan, from southern Kyushu to the Ryukyu Islands. Its essential oil has a distinct aroma and antioxidant activity but is expensive due to low extraction efficiencies. Applying underwater shockwave pretreatment to A. zerumbet leaves is expected to enable more effective essential oil extraction during subsequent steam distillation. Thus, we subjected A. zerumbet leaves to shockwave pretreatment and analyzed its effects on the essential oil yield and components. Multiple cracks formed in the cell walls via spalling destruction induced by the shockwaves, creating permeation pathways that improved the passage of water vapor and greatly increased the essential oil yield. Moreover, the pretreatment increased the antioxidant activity of the essential oil and its water extract. Underwater shockwave processing selectively and effectively destroyed the fiber and/or cell structures of the leaves, resulting in efficient essential oil extraction. This novel process has the potential for application to many extraction processes, such as the extraction of compounds from medicinal plants. The dynamic control of instantaneous high pressures based on underwater shockwaves could pave the way for a new field of industrial technology. (C) 2020 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Green-ripe pineapples are shipped overseas by sea freight, while those picked at full maturity need to be transported by airfreight over the same large distance. In this study, fresh-cut pineapple cubes were assessed two, five, and eight days after processing from green-ripe pineapples after mimicked sea freigh (SF) and fully ripe air-freighted (AF) pineapples. The sea-freighted samples displayed elevated titratable acidity (TA), thus resulting in smaller ratios of total soluble solids and TA compared to the AF pineapples. Differences in the carotenoid levels of the two fresh-cut categories were found to be insignificant. By contrast, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) calculated on the basis of the volatiles analysed by headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) permitted to distinguish all six individual sample types and to segregate them into two major clusters (SF and AF). The effect of storage on the volatiles was further evaluated by partial least squares (PLS) regression. Substantial chemical markers to differentiate the individual samples and to describe the effect of storage were deduced from the PCA and PLS regression, respectively. In general, fresh-cut products obtained from fully ripe AF fruit displayed higher concentrations of volatiles, in particular, increased concentrations of diverse methyl esters. With progressing storage duration, the concentrations of ethanol and diverse ethyl esters increased. Moreover, products from AF pineapples displayed lower microbial counts compared to those from SF fruit.

Herbs market is constantly growing worldwide, and is trying to find new species and varieties coming from specific geographical regions. While the increasing production demands novel solutions for product preservation, consumers demand guaranteed quality for these products. In case of herbs, the most common preservation method is thermo-based process – drying, which strongly affects products quality. Regarding the technological possibilities and efficiency, convective drying (CD), microwave drying, vacuum-microwave drying (VMD) and combined convective pre-drying followed by vacuum-microwave finish-drying (CPD-VMFD) methods are the most popular ones. In this study, the influence of the drying methods (CD, VMD and CPD-VMD) on Thai basil (O. basilicum var. thyrsiflora) quality was evaluated for the very first time. The chemical composition of their essential oils (EOs), dried samples (aroma profiles, APs) and sensory quality of the dried products were also studied. As a result of multiple chemical and sensory analyses and after cross-checking all these results, guidelines for chemical markers of Thai basil aroma quality were established. Odour-active compounds (OACs) contribution in Thai basil EOs did not show a clear pattern to link it with quality assessments; however, OACs contribution in APs did. The drying treatments leading to the dried products with the highest quality were: (i) 2 h CPD at 50 degrees C followed by VMFD with 360 W (2 h CPD50) and (ii) 1 h CPD at 70 degrees C followed by VMFD with 360 W (1 h CPD70).

Alpinia galanga is a wild medicinal plant having tremendous industrial importance. However, lack of quality planting material in natural resources restricted its wide exposure in industrial sector. Thus, a standardised protocol for stable supply of quality planting materials with genetical and phytochemical stability is need of the hour to meet commercial requirements. The current study reports an efficient protocol to regenerate micropropagated plantlets with long term stability in molecular as well as phytochemical level. Murashige and Skoog (MS) media augmented with 3 mg/l 6-Benzyladenine (BA), 3 mg/l Kinetin (Kn) and 1 mg/l Napthalene Acetic acid (NAA) was found optimum for regeneration and multiplication of plantlets. In order to establish genetic stability molecular marker-based profiling of micropropagated plants were done at every 6 months intervals up to 6 years. Monomorphic banding pattern were found that are identical to the mother plants. After six years of in vitro conservation, the regenerated plants were transplanted to the field and its drug yielding potential were evaluated through phytoconstituent analysis along with bioactivity studies. A comparative Gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectroscopy (MS) analysis of essential oils showed no significant differences in phytoconstituents between the conventional and in vitro propagated plants. The bioactivities like antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancerous study along with total phenolic and total flavonoid content of in vitro plants were compared with mother plants and found stable with negligible variation. Thus, the present study has enough significance towards commercial exploitation of A. galanga with phytochemical and molecular stability.

Current pharmacological therapies for the management of chronic articular diseases are far from being satisfactory, so new strategies need to be investigated. We tested the intra-articular pain relieving properties of a system of molecules from a characterizedCentella asiaticaextract (14G1862) in a rat model of osteoarthritis induced by monoiodoacetate (MIA). 14G1862 (0.2-2 mg mL(-1)) was intra-articularly (i.a.) injected 7 days after MIA, behavioural and histological evaluations were performed 14, 30 and 60 days after treatments. Moreover, the effect of 14G1862 on nitrate production and iNOS expression in RAW 264.7 macrophages stimulated with LPS was assessed. In vitro, 14G1862 treatment attenuated LPS-induced NO production and iNOS expression in a comparable manner to celecoxib. In vivo, 14G1862 significantly reduced mechanical allodynia and hyperalgesia, spontaneous pain and motor alterations starting on day 14 up to day 60. The efficacy was higher or comparable to that evoked by triamcinolone acetonide (100 mu g i.a.) used as reference drug. Histological evaluation highlighted the improvement of several morphological parameters in MIA + 14G1862-treated animals with particularly benefic effects on joint space and fibrin deposition. In conclusion, i.a. treatment withCentella asiaticais a candidate to be a novel effective approach for osteoarthritis therapy.

A targeted synthesis of dodecasubstituted type I porphyrins that utilizes the reaction of unsymmetrical 3,4-difunctionalized pyrroles and sterically demanding aldehydes was developed. This way, type I porphyrins could be obtained as the only type isomers, likely due to a minimization of the steric strain arising from peri-interactions. Uniquely, this method does not depend on lengthy precursor syntheses, the separation of isomers, or impractical limitations of the scale. In addition, single-crystal X-ray analysis was used to elucidate the structural features of the macrocycles.

Radical hydroboration reactions have only recently been reported and are still rare. Here we describe a photoredox radical hydroboration of alpha,beta-unsaturated esters, amides, ketones, and nitriles with NHC-boranes that uses only an organocatalyst and visible light. The conditions are mild, the substrate scope is broad, and the alpha/beta regioselectivity is high. The reaction requires only the organocatalyst; there is no costly metal, and there are no other additives (base, cocatalyst, initiator).

A stable and reproducible layer of Prussian blue (PB) modified with copper was electrodeposited on carbon paper electrodes for the multiple detection of ester flavorants with a bienzymatic biosensor. Carbon fiber composite paper was investigated as high-surface, low-cost substrate for biosensor development. The pre-activation of the electrode surface by cyclic voltammetry was necessary to improve the electrochemical properties before the electrochemical deposition of Prussian blue-copper film (PB-Cu). The stability and the reproducibility of the obtained PB-Cu carbon paper electrode was demonstrated at pH 7.4, optimum for biosensor development. The developed biosensor is based on the immobilization of two enzymes (carboxyl esterase and alcohol oxidase) by cross-linking with glutaraldehyde onto PB-Cu carbon paper electrode. A mixture of key aroma ester compounds (methyl butyrate, ethyl butyrate, methyl cinnamate and ethyl cinnamate) was detected in several food samples with low interferences.

Background: The association of sugar containing beverages (SCBs) with risk of breast, endometrial, ovarian and colorectal cancers is unclear. Therefore, we investigated these associations in the Canadian Study of Diet, Lifestyle, and Health. Methods: The study population comprised an age-stratified subcohort of 3185 women and 848, 161, 91 and 243 breast, endometrial, ovarian and colorectal cancer cases, respectively. We used Cox proportional hazards regression models modified for the case-cohort design to assess the associations of SCBs with risk of the aforementioned cancers. Results: Compared to SCB intake in the lowest tertile, SCB intake in the highest tertile was positively associated with endometrial cancer risk (HRT3 vs T1 = 1.58, 95 % CI = 1.08-2.33 and 1.78, 95 % CI = 1.12-2.81 for overall and Type 1 endometrial cancer, respectively) and ovarian cancer (HRT3 vs T1 = 1.76, 95 % CI: 1.09-2.83). Fruit juice intake was also positively associated with risk of Type 1endometrial (HRT3 vs T1 = 1.63, 95 % CI = 1.03-2.60). After excluding women with diabetes or cardiovascular diseases, we also observed sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) intake in the highest tertile was associated with higher risk of Type 1 endometrial cancer (HRT3 vs T1 = 1.65; 95 % CI: 1.03-2.64). None of the beverages was associated with risk of breast or colorectal cancer. Conclusion: We conclude that, in this cohort, relatively high SCB intake was associated with higher risk of endometrial and ovarian cancers, but not of breast or colorectal cancers. Our findings also suggest that relatively high SSB and fruit juice intake are associated with higher risk of Type 1 endometrial cancer.
