The sustainable catalytic transformation of alcs. to high value-added fine chems. is a significant and challenging research topic. Herein, a set of nitrogen-doped carbon encapsulated Co-based catalysts (Co-Co3O4@NC-T) were prepared by using low-cost dicyandiamide, glyoxal and cobalt nitrate as precursors. The obtained catalysts were utilized for the selective oxidation of alcs. to high value-added esters and carboxylic acids with air as the oxygen source and displayed wide applicability for the oxidation of both aromatic and aliphatic alcs. Based on the controlled experiments, the protective effect of N-doped carbon structure and the synergistic effect between Co core and Co3O4 species guaranteed the high reaction conversion and selectivity. Benefitting from heterogeneity and magnetism of the catalyst, it can be easily recycled and reused for long-term stability. Reasonable mechanisms of selective oxidation reaction were proposed through EPR anal. and controlled experiments The present work provides a facile strategy for potential large-scale preparation of heterogeneous catalyst for sustainable and green catalytic transformations.

Herein, we investigated the activation and stabilization of Pd nanoparticles using microparticles of chitosan-functionalized with phosphine moieties. The catalytic activity of the prepared material was assessed in a series of Heck reactions, which demonstrated the potential of our catalyst concerning yields and reaction scope. Comparative experiments confirmed the superior performance of the phosphine-modified material with respect to a similar catalyst derived from non-functionalized chitosan. Finally, the prepared catalyst also exhibited appreciable activity even after four consecutive reaction runs, with minimal loss of Pd by leaching.

Luo, Ming published the artcileIntegrative analysis of multiple metabolomes and transcriptome revealed color expression mechanism in red skin root syndrome of Panax ginseng, Safety of Methyl 3-phenyl-2-propenoate, the publication is Industrial Crops and Products (2022), 114491, database is CAplus.

Red skin root syndrome causes reduction of both production and quality of Panax ginseng (ginseng). However, its development process and key metabolites are still unknown. Multiple metabolomes including non-targeted metabolome, and anthocyanins-targeted and carotenoids-targeted metabolomes were performed on field grown red skin and healthy ginseng. The detected metabolites were analyzed in combination with previous transcriptome results. The total metabolite profiles revealed that primary metabolites especially citrate was decreased, but secondary metabolites mainly involved in phenylpropanoid pathway were increased in red skin ginseng compared to those in healthy ginseng. Targeted metabolome found that each gram of fresh red skin ginseng sample contained 8 μg β-carotene, 0.56 μg α-carotene, 0.017 μg rutin, 0.248 μg chalcone, and some anthocyanins including 0.023 μg cyanidin and 0.037 μg quercetin 3-O-glucoside, albeit in low concentrations but higher than those in healthy ginseng. Furthermore, integrative metabolome and transcriptome anal. revealed that changes of metabolites related to anthocyanins synthesis were correlated with the related gene expression patterns. Addnl., jasmonate (JA) and its precursor 12-oxophytodienoic acid increased their concentrations dramatically in red skin ginseng, suggesting the possible role of JA or JA signaling pathway in regulating red skin syndrome. Consistently, the expressions of 17 MYB transcription factors were differentially regulated in red skin ginseng. JA related cis-elements are widely distributed at their promoters. Taken together, our study revealed reduction of primary metabolism but increase of secondary metabolism in red skin ginseng. MYB transcription factors of JA signal pathway were supposed to mediate accumulation of anthocyanins and carotenoids that contributed to the development of red skin ginseng.

Few studies have linked sensory descriptions of the aroma profiles of fresh, sweet basil varieties with their volatile chem. Using a recently developed lexicon for fresh basil, a descriptive panel characterized the aroma profiles of seven basil varieties. Chem. anal. of fresh basil leaves was performed using GC-MS headspace anal. Anal. of variance probed for differences in the sensory attributes among varieties and principal component anal. (PCA) related the sensory profiles to volatile chem. composition Three com. specialty basils, “Queenette Thai” (QT), “Sweet-Dani” (SD) lemon basil, and MC-9 (cinnamon basil) had strong anise, lemon, and cinnamon-like aromas, resp. These basils were distinguished from breeding lines of traditional Italian sweet basils where SB-22, CB-1, and CB-39 exhibited strong anise-like aroma and SB-17 had strong “general spice” aromas, characteristic of a warm spice blend. The PCA accounted for 58.7% of the variation in the data and characterized the samples in two dimensions: general spice-citrus and cinnamon-like-anise. There was a strong correspondence between the sensory attributes and volatile chem. composition SD associated with lemon aroma and citral content; QT, CB-1, and CB-39 associated with anise aroma and Me chavicol; and MC-9 associated with the cinnamon-like aroma, Me cinnamate. SB-17 and SB-22 associated with general spice aroma and were in close proximity to the spice-like volatiles, 1,8 cineole, and eugenol, associated with clove aroma. We constructed precise sensory/chem. profiles for fresh basil aroma that can be used to guide breeding programs for variety improvement to meet consumer expectations or market demand.

Supported metal catalysts, for instance, palladium, are one of the foundations of chem. reactions, especially in C-C bond formation. The present study reports preparation of a magnetically separable palladium-supported nano-biocomposite with a low cost and easy immobilization technique. Fibroin, a natural biodegradable polymer, was used through an in situ method to cover the Fe3O4 nanoparticles to make a nano-biocomposite followed by anchoring palladium on the fibroin surface. The morphol. and the structure of palladium-supported nano-biocomposite Fe3O4@fibroin-Pd were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TGA, SEM, EDX, and TEM techniques. Consequently, the nanocatalyst activity was evaluated in the Heck coupling reactions. Only a very small amount of the nanocatalyst was employed in the reaction, and it showed excellent catalytic activity; in most cases more than 90% efficiency. The significant advantages of employing this nanocatalyst include high catalytic activity, short reaction times, easy separation of the nanocatalyst with an external magnet and great reusability. The results demonstrated that the used nanocatalysts were very active for four consecutive reaction rounds.

Ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes are among the most popular sensitizers in photocatalysis, but they face some severe limitations concerning accessible excited-state energies and photostability that could hamper future applications. In this study, the borylation of heteroleptic ruthenium(II) cyanide complexes with α-diimine ancillary ligands is identified as a useful concept to elevate the energies of photoactive metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) states and to obtain unusually photorobust compounds suitable for thermodynamically challenging energy transfer catalysis as well as oxidative and reductive photoredox catalysis. B(C6F5)3 groups attached to the CN ligands stabilize the metal-based t2g-like orbitals by ~0.8 eV, leading to high 3MLCT energies (up to 2.50 eV) that are more typical for cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes. Through variation of their α-diimine ligands, nonradiative excited-state relaxation pathways involving higher-lying metal-centered states can be controlled, and their luminescence quantum yields and MLCT lifetimes can be optimized. These combined properties make the resp. isocyanoborato complexes amenable to photochem. reactions for which common ruthenium(II)-based sensitizers are unsuited, due to a lack of sufficient triplet energy or excited-state redox power. Specifically, this includes photoisomerization reactions, sensitization of nickel-catalyzed cross-couplings, pinacol couplings, and oxidative decarboxylative C-C couplings. Our work is relevant in the greater context of tailoring photoactive coordination compounds to current challenges in synthetic photochem. and solar energy conversion.

The present study aimed to assess metabolites heterogeneity among four major Cinnamomum species, including true cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) and less explored species (C. cassia, C. iners, and C. tamala). UPLC-MS led to the annotation of 74 secondary metabolites belonging to different classes, including phenolic acids, tannins, flavonoids, and lignans. A new proanthocyanidin was identified for the first time in C. tamala, along with several glycosylated flavonoid and dicarboxylic fatty acids reported for the first time in cinnamon. Multivariate data analyses revealed, for cinnamates, an abundance in C. verum vs. procyandins, dihydro-coumaroylglycosides, and coumarin in C. cassia. A total of 51 primary metabolites were detected using GC-MS anal. encompassing different classes, viz. sugars, fatty acids, and sugar alcs., with true cinnamon from Malaysia suggested as a good sugar source for diabetic patients. Glycerol in C. tamala, erythritol in C. iners, and glucose and fructose in C. verum from Malaysia were major metabolites contributing to the discrimination among species.

Olfactory cues constitute one of the most important plant-pollinator communication channels. Specific chem. components can be associated with specific pollinator functional groups due to pollinator-mediated selection on flower volatile (FV) emission. Here, we used multivariate analyses of FV data to detect an association between FVs and the worldwide distributed pollinator group of the carpenter bees (Xylocopa spp.). We compiled FVs of 29 plant species: 9 pollinated by carpenter bees, 20 pollinated by other bee pollinator functional groups. We tested whether FV emission differed between these groups. To rule out any phylogenetic bias in our dataset, we tested FV emission for phylogenetic signal. Finally, using field assays, we tested the attractive function of two FVs found to be associated with carpenter bees. We found no significant multivariate difference between the two plant groups FVs. However, seven FVs (five apocarotenoid terpenoids, one long-chain alkane and one benzenoid) were significantly associated with carpenter bee pollination, thus being “predictor” compounds of pollination by this pollinator functional group. From those, β-ionone and (E)-Me cinnamate presented the highest indicator values and had their behavioral function assessed in field assays. Phylogenetic signal for FVs emission was weak, suggesting that their emission could result from pollinator-mediated selection. In field assays, the apocarotenoid β-ionone attracted carpenter bees, but also bees from other functional groups. The benzenoid (E)-Me cinnamate did not attract significant numbers of pollinators. Thus, β-ionone functions as a non-specific bee attractant, while apocarotenoid FVs emerge as consistent indicators of pollination by large food-foraging bees among bee-pollinated flowers.
