The complexes Pd-II(qcq)(OAc) and Pt-II(qcq)Cl have been synthesized using environmentally benign synthesized ligands and characterized by elemental analyses: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, H-1 NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The catalytic activity of the complex was assessed, in different media, for the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction for typical aryl halides and terminal olefins under aerobic conditions. Since the base and the solvent were found to influence the efficiency of the reaction, reaction conditions, temperature, time, and the amount of K3PO4 and a mixture of H2O/PEG, were optimized. We found, for the Mizoroki-Heck reaction coupling less reactive aryl chloride derivatives with olefins, promising activity for palladium catalysts. The electrochemical behavior of Hqcq and the Pd(II) complex was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and irreversible Pd-II/I reductions were observed. Hqcq and the Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes were also screened for their in vitro antibacterial activity. They showed promising antibacterial activity comparable to that of the antibiotic penicillin.

Aims/Introduction Painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (PDPN) has a significant impact on the patient’s quality of life. The prevalence of PDPN in the Middle East and North Africa region has been reported to be almost double that of populations in the UK. We sought to determine the prevalence of PDPN and its associated factors in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients attending secondary care in Qatar. Materials and Methods This was a cross-sectional study of 1,095 participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus attending Qatar’s two national diabetes centers. PDPN and impaired vibration perception on the pulp of the large toes were assessed using the Douleur Neuropathique en 4 questionnaire with a cut-off >= 4 and the neurothesiometer with a cut-off >= 15 V, respectively. Results The prevalence of PDPN was 34.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] 31.7-37.3), but 80% of these patients had not previously been diagnosed or treated for this condition. Arabs had a higher prevalence of PDPN compared with South Asians (P < 0.05). PDPN was associated with impaired vibration perception adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 4.42 (95% CI 2.92-6.70), smoking AOR 2.43 (95% CI 1.43-4.15), obesity AOR 1.74 (95% CI 1.13-2.66), being female AOR 1.65 (95% CI: 1.03-2.64) and duration of diabetes AOR 1.08 (95% CI 1.05-1.11). Age, poor glycemic control, hypertension, physical activity and proteinuria showed no association with PDPN. Conclusions PDPN occurs in one-third of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients attending secondary care in Qatar, but the majority have not been diagnosed. Arabs are at higher risk for PDPN. Impaired vibration perception, obesity and smoking are associated with PDPN in Qatar. 4-Ethyltoluene is a very valuable chemical that is currently produced from fossil feedstocks. Production of 4-ethyltoluene from renewable and cheap lignin is of great significance. Herein, we report a new route to produce 4-ethyltoluene from lignin. It was discovered that RhCl3-LiI-LiBF4 was an efficient catalytic system for the reaction of lignin with CO to form 4-ethyltoluene. In the reaction, ethylbenzene was first formed via demethoxylation and depolymerization of lignin, which was further transformed into 4-ethyltoluene by methylation using methoxy from the lignin. The yield of 4-ethyltoluene could reach 9.5 wt% when GVL-lignin was used as the starting material. Interestingly, 5.2 wt% yield of 4-ethyltoluene was obtained when raw poplar was directly used as the starting material. As far as we know, the transformation of lignin with 4-ethyltoluene as the major product has not been reported. This work provides a new strategy to produce valuable aromatic compounds from renewable resources.

The fumigant antibacterial activities of 50 plant essential oils belonging to 10 families were investigated against Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Among the test plant essential oils, Cinnamomum verum (cinnamon bark) essential oil showed the most potent fumigant antibacterial activity. When we investigated the antibacterial activities of compounds identified from cinnamon bark essential oil and 9 congeners of trans-cinnamaldehyde, lengths of inhibition zone of trans-cinnamaldehyde, salicylaldehyde and hydrocinnamaldehyde were 1.28, 1.73, and 1.24 cm at 0.625 mg/paper disc concentration, respectively. To determine the mode of action of trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde, intercellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and cell membrane integrity were determined using a confocal laser scanning microscopy. Furthermore, we compared the up- and down-regulated gene expression of A. tumefaciens treated with trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde with that of untreated A. tumefaciens. With cutoffs of vertical bar log2FC vertical bar > 1 and FDR < 0.05, 29 and 43 down-regulated genes and 27 and 117 up-regulated genes were found in the treatment of trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde, respectively. Based on the ROS generation results, cell membrane integrity assay, and gene expression, we conclude that the antibacterial mode of action of trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde is ROS generation by the Fenton reaction caused by the down-regulation of an ATP synthesis-related gene cluster, corrupted iron ion homeostasis, and a corrupted ROS defense mechanism. The high concentration of ROS damaged the A. tumefaciens cell membrane, which caused cell death. Formula: C10H10O2. The aroma properties of cocoa nibs obtained by applying a novel postharvest treatment were investigated using methods of the molecular sensory science approach, i.e., solvent extraction and solvent-assisted flavor evaporation, aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA), stable isotope dilution analysis, calculation of odor activity values (OAVs), and orthonasal sensory evaluation; those properties were then compared to the unfermented and dried raw material and a traditionally fermented sample of the same harvest. For the treatment, unfermented and dried cocoa nibs were, first, rehydrated with lactic acid and ethanol solution to adjust the pH value to 5.1 and, second, incubated under aerobic conditions for 72 h at 45 degrees C and subsequently dried. This treatment was used to induce enzymatic reactions within the cotyledon matrix, which also occur inside the bean during microbial fermentation of the surrounding fruit pulp. The results of the AEDA showed that many of the key aroma compounds found in fermented and dried cocoa increased during the incubation treatment. Especially some fruity esters were found with an equal or even higher flavor dilution (FD) factor in the incubated sample compared to the fermented sample, whereas the fermented sample showed high FD factors for pungent, sour and sweaty acids, such as acetic acid and 2- and 3-methylbutanoic acids. The quantitative data and calculated OAVs for the samples supported the findings of the AEDA, underlining the potential of this approach as a controllable and reproducible alternative postharvest treatment.

BACKGROUND Pest management using botanicals has been widely practiced in sub-Saharan Africa and other parts of the world in recent times. The natural compounds present in these botanicals are known to be responsible for the protection they offer against insect pests. Some of these compounds may act as single compounds to produce an effect or they may be synergistically effective. In the present study using a bioassay guided approach, two cinnamic acid derivatives, methyl cinnamate and sitosterol cinnamate, were isolated from the leaves of Ocimum gratissimum and Vitellaria paradoxa, respectively. RESULTS The two cinnamic acid derivatives were found to show higher levels of insecticidal, larvicidal and larval growth inhibition activities against Tribolium castaneum. The LC50 of methyl cinnamate was determined to be 26.92 mg mL(-1) (95% CL: 1.18.66-38.84 mg mL(-1); slope +/- SE: 2.84 +/- 0.81) for the adult 8.31 mg mL(-1) (95% CL: 2.39-28.83 mg mL(-1); slope +/- SE: 0.66 +/- 0.28) for the larvae while the LC50 of sitosterol cinnamate was determined to be 6.92 mg mL(-1) (95% CL: 3.97-12.06 mg mL(-1); slope +/- SE: 1.59 +/- 0.12) the adult and 3.91 mg mL(-1) (95% CL: 2.21-6.93 mg mL(-1); slope +/- SE: 1.52 +/- 0.13) for the larvae. CONCLUSION Generally, the susceptibility of adult T. castaneum to these cinnamic acid esters can be directly associated with the concentration as well as time of exposure to the compounds. The isolated compounds support the use of O. gratissimum and V. paradoxa as important botanicals for the management of storage pests. (c) 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Static supercritical fluid extraction has been used to concentrate the aroma materials of common herbs and spices. The technique has provided a higher number of components and cleaner extract than the one-step ethanol maceration. The one-step supercritical fluid extraction of the aroma compounds has been combined with their in situ adsorption in hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica aerogels. The extracts have been analyzed by a GC-MS technique and 55 aroma compounds have been identified. Most of the compounds have been adsorbed in both polar and apolar silica aerogels with no direct connection with the surface polarity. However, previously undetected compounds enriched to an analytically significant level, while others competed with each other for the active sites on the surface. Functionalized silica aerogels can be used as a new type of aroma storage materials and as selective and tuneable adsorbents for the extraction and enrichment of potentially active components from a complex matrix.

Nano-ferrite-supported Cu nanoparticles (Fe-dopamine-Cu NPs) catalyzed anti-Markovnikov-selective hydroboration of alkenes with B(2)pin(2) is reported under mild reaction conditions. This protocol can be applied to a broad range of substrates with high functional group compatibility. In addition, we demonstrated the use of Fe-dopamine-Cu NPs as a catalyst for the beta-borylation of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones and ester, providing alkylboronate esters in up to 98% yield. Reuse of the magnetically recyclable catalyst resulted in no significant loss of activity in up to five reaction runs for both systems.
