BACKGROUND Environmental safety of the agricultural utilization of livestock and poultry manures from intensive farming is attracting great attention and is effective as a good source of nitrogen for sustainable crop production. The present study aimed to determine the effects of organic poultry manure applications on the biological value and essential oil content of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). In this context, different doses of chicken, kibele (fermented chicken manure) and turkey manure (750, 1000, 1250 and 1500 kg da(-1)) with a control (no manure) were applied by sowing. RESULTS The essential oils consisted of p-Allyl-anisole as the most abundant component (5.65-17.90%), followed by nerol (6.69-16.11%), linalool (5.10-10.81%) and z-citral (5.23-10.73%). The contents of most of the chemical constituents varied significantly (P < 0.05) with organic poultry manure applications. The highest concentration for essential oils components was found in the chicken manure application. Both the antioxidant activity and total phenolic amounts of the basil extracts varied significantly as the organic poultry manure applications changed. The highest antioxidant activity and total phenolic amounts were obtained in the treatments with chicken manure doses of 1000 and 1250 kg da(-1), which were significantly different compared to the other treatments and the control treatment. Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of the essential oils against bacterial strains: Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300 and Candida albicans ATCC 10231 was assessed by the disc diffusion method and determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration. The results of antimicrobial assays indicated that all of the tested microorganisms were affected. The highest antibacterial activity against all tested microbial species was observed with 1250 kg da(-1) chicken manure applications. CONCLUSION Among the organic poultry fertilizations, chicken fertilization was of particular interest. Especially, chicken manure doses of 1000-1250 kg da(-1) had the highest antibacterial and antioxidant activity, as well as total phenolics, flavonoids and essential oil components. NHC-Catalyzed aerobic oxidative reactions of imines and aldehydes have been developed by using sodium pyruvate as a novel and efficient peroxide scavenger. A structurally diverse set of imidates and amidines has been prepared from imines using this strategy. This general and efficient strategy features the use of sodium pyruvate as a novel and efficient peroxide scavenger and ambient air as the sole oxidant to efficiently control the NHC-catalyzed aerobic reaction pathway (selective realization of the oxidative pathway) under mild and green conditions.

The genus Ocimum is a boutique of a diverse set of specialized metabolites such as terpenoids and phenylpropanoids. Each Ocimum species and its cultivars represent a characteristic chemical profile. The present study explored the two interspecific Ocimum hybrids originating through a serendipitous natural cross between O. kilimandscharicum and O. basilicum. These two novel Ocimum hybrids exhibited intermediate morphological features of two parental species. Inter simple sequence repeats (ISSR) analysis and DNA barcoding with the plastid non-coding trnH-psbA intergenic spacer region reaffirmed unambiguous parental identification and differentiation of these natural hybrids from other available Ocimum species. Consequently, gas chromatographymass spectrometry-based metabolite profiling of two hybrids identified them as specific chemotypes with the presence of a unique blend of specialized metabolites from the parental species, which are either rich in terpenes or phenylpropanoids. Additionally, expression analysis of key genes from terpenoid and phenylpropanoid pathways corroborated with differential metabolite accumulation. Thus, these two Ocimum hybrids represented the novel chemotypes, which could be useful in commercial cultivation to produce novel essential oil and bioactive constituents. Further, the resulting metabolite diversity could have potential industrial applications in the areas of healthcare, bioremediation, and crop protection.

A targeted synthesis of dodecasubstituted type I porphyrins that utilizes the reaction of unsymmetrical 3,4-difunctionalized pyrroles and sterically demanding aldehydes was developed. This way, type I porphyrins could be obtained as the only type isomers, likely due to a minimization of the steric strain arising from peri-interactions. Photoredox chemistry has greatly stimulated the application of radical based transformations in medicinal chemistry and early drug discovery in recent years. Carboxylate groups have been identified as traceless leaving groups that can be converted into radical intermediates capable of undergoing 1,4-conjugate addition reactions to Michael acceptors. Herein, we show the successful C-terminal derivatization of small peptide substrates by using this methodology in a parallel synthesis setting. Objectives: The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in infective endocarditis (IE), its risk factors and consequences on patient and renal survival remain debated. Methods: Patients hospitalized for a first episode of IE (possible or definite according to modified Duke criteria) between 2013 and 2016 were included. The primary endpoint was to determine risk factors for early AKI (E-AKI) during the first week of management of IE. Results: A total of 276 patients were included: 220 (79.7%) had definite IE and 56 (20.3%) had possible IE. E-AKI occurred in 150 patients (53%). IE due to Staphylococcus aureus (OR 3.41; 95% CI 1.83-6.39; p < 0.01), history of diabetes (OR 2.34; 95% CI 1.25-4.37; p < 0.01), peripheral arterial disease (OR 2.59; 95% CI 1.07-6.23; p < 0.05), immunological manifestations (OR 3.11; 95% CI 1.31-7.39; p = 0.01), and use of norepinephrine (OR 3.44; 95% CI 1.72-7.02; p < 0.01) were associated with E-AKI. In subgroup analysis, infectious disease consultation was associated with a lower risk of AKI at day 7 (OR 0.41; 95% CI 0.16-0.88; p = 0.04). E-AKI was associated with 1-year mortality (OR 1.65; 95% CI 1.03-2.64; p = 0.04) and chronic kidney disease progression (OR 2.23; 95% CI 1.30-3.82; p < 0.01). Conclusions: E-AKI is common in IE and often associated with non-modifiable variables. Selaginella P. Beauv. is a group of vascular plants in the family Selaginellaceae Willk., found worldwide and numbering more than 700 species, with some used as foods and medicines. The aim of this paper was to compare methanolic (MeOH) and dichloromethane (DCM) extracts of eight Selaginella species on the basis of their composition and biological activities. Six of these Selaginella species are underinvestigated. Using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) analysis, we identified a total of 193 compounds among the tested Selaginella species, with flavonoids predominating. MeOH extracts recovered more constituents that were detected, including selaginellins, the occurrence of which is only typical for this plant genus. Of all the tested species, Selaginella apoda contained the highest number of identified selaginellins. The majority of the compounds were identified in S. apoda, the fewest compounds in Selaginella cupressina. All the tested species demonstrated antioxidant activity using oxygen radical absorption capacity (ORAC) assay, which showed that MeOH extracts had higher antioxidant capacity, with the half maximal effective concentration (EC50) ranging from 12 +/- 1 (Selaginella myosuroides) to 124 +/- 2 (Selaginella cupressina) mg/L. The antioxidant capacity was presumed to be correlated with the content of flavonoids, (neo)lignans, and selaginellins. Inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was mostly discerned in DCM extracts and was only exhibited in S. myosuroides, S. cupressina, Selaginella biformis, and S. apoda extracts with the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) in the range of 19 +/- 3 to 62 +/- 1 mg/L. Substantial cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines was demonstrated by the MeOH extract of S. apoda, where the ratio of the IC50 HEK (human embryonic kidney) to IC50 HepG2 (hepatocellular carcinoma) was 7.9 +/- 0.2. MeOH extracts inhibited the production of nitrate oxide and cytokines in a dose-dependent manner. Notably, S. biformis halved the production of NO, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, and interleukin (IL)-6 at the following concentrations: 105 +/- 9, 11 +/- 1, and 10 +/- 1 mg/L, respectively. Our data confirmed that extracts from Selaginella species exhibited cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines and AChE inhibition. The activity observed in S. apoda was the most promising and is worth further exploration.

This study investigated the impacts of selective sole carbon source-induced micropollutants (MPs) cometabolism of Chlorella sp. by: (i) extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), superoxide dismutase and peroxidase enzyme production; (ii) MPs removal efficiency and cometabolism rate; (iii) MPs’ potential degradation products identification; and (iv) degradation pathways and validation using the Eawag database to differentiate the cometabolism of Chlorella sp. with other microbes. Adding the sole carbon sources in the presence of MPs increased EPS and enzyme concentrations from 2 to 100-fold in comparison with only sole carbon sources. This confirmed that MPs cometabolism had occurred. The removal efficiencies of tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, and bisphenol A ranged from 16-99%, 32-92%, and 58-99%, respectively. By increasing EPS and enzyme activity, the MPs concentrations accumulated in microalgae cells also fell 400-fold. The cometabolism process resulted in several degradation products of MPs. This study drew an insightful understanding of cometabolism for MPs remediation in wastewater. Based on the results, proper carbon sources for microalgae can be selected for practical applications to remediate MPs in wastewater while simultaneously recovering biomass for several industries and gaining revenue. A versatile and DES-compatible bipyridine palladium complex has been developed as a general pre-catalyst for different cross-coupling reactions (Hiyama, Suzuki-Miyaura, Heck-Mizoroki and Sonogashira) in deep eutectic solvents. Hydrogen bond capacity of the ligand allows to keep the excellent level of results previously obtained in classical organic solvents. Palladium pre-catalyst showed a high catalytic activity for many cross-coupling reactions, demonstrating a great versatility and applicability. Also, this methodology employs sustainable solvents as a reaction medium and highlights the potential of DES as alternative solvents in organometallic catalysis. The catalyst and DES were easily and successfully recycled. The formation of PdNPs in DES has been confirmed by TEM and XPS analysis and their role as catalyst by mercury test. The dynamic coordination of bipyridine-type ligand in the palladium complex formation has been studied via UV/Vis.
