Herein described is a sustainable system for hydrogenation that uses solar light as the ultimate source of energy. The system consists of two steps. Solar energy is captured and chemically stored in the first step; exposure of a solution of azaxanthone in ethanol to solar light causes an energy storing dimerization of the ketone to produce a sterically strained 1,2-diol. In the second step, the chemical energy stored in the vicinal diol is released and used for hydrogenation; the diol offers hydrogen onto alkenes and splits back to azaxanthone, which is easily recovered and reused repeatedly for capturing solar energy.

Loess Plateau is a new rapidly developing wine region in China, but wine style from this region is rarely studied. The aroma typicalies and differences of Cabernet Sauvignon wines between Loess Plateau and other three main regions (Shandong, Ningxia and Xinjiang) in China were comprehensively analyzed by Quantitative Descriptive Analysis (QDA (R)), Napping (R) and Gas Chromatography-Olfactometry (GC-O) analysis. Results showed that differences existed between wines from Loess Plateau and other three regions in China based on their aroma characteristics. The results of QDA (R) and Napping (R) revealed that wines from Loess Plateau had richer fruity aroma, especially the typical hawthorn aroma. A similar result showed that the fruity compounds had higher flavor dilution factors in wines from Loess Plateau by aroma extract dilution analysis. Identified by GC-O and gas chromatography-mass spectrometric, ethyl butanoate, isoamyl formate and butyl acetate were key compounds for the fruity aroma of wines from Loess Plateau.

Herbs market is constantly growing worldwide, and is trying to find new species and varieties coming from specific geographical regions. While the increasing production demands novel solutions for product preservation, consumers demand guaranteed quality for these products. In case of herbs, the most common preservation method is thermo-based process – drying, which strongly affects products quality. Regarding the technological possibilities and efficiency, convective drying (CD), microwave drying, vacuum-microwave drying (VMD) and combined convective pre-drying followed by vacuum-microwave finish-drying (CPD-VMFD) methods are the most popular ones. In this study, the influence of the drying methods (CD, VMD and CPD-VMD) on Thai basil (O. basilicum var. thyrsiflora) quality was evaluated for the very first time. The chemical composition of their essential oils (EOs), dried samples (aroma profiles, APs) and sensory quality of the dried products were also studied. As a result of multiple chemical and sensory analyses and after cross-checking all these results, guidelines for chemical markers of Thai basil aroma quality were established. Odour-active compounds (OACs) contribution in Thai basil EOs did not show a clear pattern to link it with quality assessments; however, OACs contribution in APs did. The drying treatments leading to the dried products with the highest quality were: (i) 2 h CPD at 50 degrees C followed by VMFD with 360 W (2 h CPD50) and (ii) 1 h CPD at 70 degrees C followed by VMFD with 360 W (1 h CPD70).

Artemisia fragrans is an aromatic and perennial herb with green silver leaves and yellow flowers, widely distributed in Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia and Turkey. The plant and its essential oil (EO) are used in traditional medicine and have economic value. In this study, the composition, antibacterial and antioxidant activities of 16 A. fragrans essential oil samples collected from different habitats in Iran were analyzed. A total of 85 compounds were detected using GC-MS analysis, the major constituents being camphor (9.91-34.44 %), alpha-thujone (19.22-42.63 %) and 1,8-cineole (12.57-31.87 %). Davanone D, alpha-cadinol, verbenene, ortho-oci-men were detected in the analysis as the new components for this species and are first reported by us. Anti-bacterial activity and minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of EOs were tested on Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Proteus vulgaris (Gram-negative strains) Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococ-cus epidermidis and Bacillus subtilis (Gram-positive strains). The EOs showed better inhibitory effects against Gram-negative strains compared to Gram-positive ones. Among the EOs, E7 (IC50 = 9.1 mu g/mL) population showed the highest radical scavenging capacity, which was equal to the positive control (butylated hyroxytoluene). The quantitative and qualitative variability of the studied EOs and their antibacterial and antioxidant activities may be recommended for pharmacological and cosmetic industries.

Reported here is the discovery of a redox-neutral Ni-II/Ni(II)catalytic cycle which is capable of the linear-selective hydroarylation of unactivated alkenes with arylboronic acids for the first time. This novel catalytic cycle, enabled by the use of an electron-rich diimine ligand, features broad substrate scope, and excellent functional-group and heterocycle compatibility under mild reaction conditions in the absence of additional oxidants and reductants. Mechanistic investigations using kinetic analysis and deuterium-labelling experiments revealed the protonation to be the rate-determining step in this redox-neutral catalysis, and the reversible chain-walking nature of the newly developed diimine-Ni catalyst.

Static supercritical fluid extraction has been used to concentrate the aroma materials of common herbs and spices. The technique has provided a higher number of components and cleaner extract than the one-step ethanol maceration. The one-step supercritical fluid extraction of the aroma compounds has been combined with their in situ adsorption in hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica aerogels. The extracts have been analyzed by a GC-MS technique and 55 aroma compounds have been identified. Most of the compounds have been adsorbed in both polar and apolar silica aerogels with no direct connection with the surface polarity. However, previously undetected compounds enriched to an analytically significant level, while others competed with each other for the active sites on the surface. Functionalized silica aerogels can be used as a new type of aroma storage materials and as selective and tuneable adsorbents for the extraction and enrichment of potentially active components from a complex matrix.

This heterogenized Celite center dot PANI center dot Pd system, is used as an efficient catalyst for chemoselective hydrogenation reactions. The catalyst is characterized by usual spectral, analytical techniques and studied for hydrogenation reactions at ambient conditions. The purpose of this study was to inspect the suitability of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicumL.) for phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated areas in urban areas of Egypt through study the impact of the most common pollutants in Egypt: cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) on morphological traits, and essential oil (EOs) content of sweet basil. The experiment was done under greenhouse conditions. The applied treatments tested in this experiment for Cd concentrations were 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 ppm and for Pb: 100, 350, 750, 1,000, 1,500 ppm. The composition and amount of EOs had been determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated that the contaminated soil had a negative impact on morphological traits development of basil (e.g., the decline in fresh and dry weight). The increase in Cd and Pb concentrations enhanced the EOs yield of sweet basil. In general, basil cultivation in the Cd and Pb contaminated soils could cause undesirable impacts on morphological traits; however, the presence of these metals has a major influence on the EOs yield, composition, and phytoremediation of the soil.

This work focused on the synthesis of 3D Pd-based nanocomposites which were tested in Heck coupling reactions and for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes. This was achieved by fabrication of graphene oxide/nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (G/N-CNTs) by mechanical grinding of 2D graphene oxide (GO) and 1D oxygen-treated nitrogen-doped CNTs (N-CNTs-OT) in a 3:1 ratio, respectively. The fabrication of G/N-CNTs is to overcome the habitual aggregation and restacking of graphene sheets. Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were deposited on the 3D G/N-CNTs nanocomposites via metal organic chemical vapour deposition method. The 3D Pd-based nanocomposites were characterized by TEM, SEM, HRTEM, XRD, TGA, XPS, ICP-OES, elemental analysis, BET analysis and Raman spectroscopy. For the Heck coupling reactions, aryl halides, olefins and 3D Pd-based nanocomposites were mixed in a suitable solvent and the reaction carried under microwave irradiation.The chemoselective hydrogenation of nitroarenes was done with dry ethanol in a Paar reactor, purged with H-2 gas. These catalysts demonstrate excellent activity and selectivity in both reactions. The remarkable activity of the 3D Pd-based nanocomposites in Heck reactions and hydrogenation of nitroarenes may be attributed to the small particle size (3-10 nm) and a high degree of dispersion of Pd NPs. A comparative experiment was conducted with Pd/AC, Pd/CNTs, Pd/G/CNTs and Pd/rGO. Pd/G/N-CNTs-OT showed higher activity and selectivity than Pd/G/CNTs, Pd/G/N-CNTs, Pd/rGO and Pd/N-CNTs counterpart.
