A Ni salt of phosphomolybdic acid (NiHPMA) was synthesized and characterized by various physico-chemical techniques such as EDX, UV-Visible spectroscopy, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy and XPS. FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy confirm the presence of Ni as a counter cation while UV-Visible and XPS studies to confirm the presence of Ni(ii) in the catalyst. The catalyst was evaluated for its bi-functional activity towards the tandem conversion of benzaldehyde to ethyl benzoate and it was found that very small amounts of Ni (2.64 x 10(-3)mmol) enhance the selectivity towards benzoate. A detailed mechanistic study was carried out by UV-Visible and Raman spectroscopy to confirm that both intermediate species, Mo-peroxo and Ni-oxo, are responsible for higher selectivity towards esters. Further, a study to determine the effect of addenda atoms (heteropoly acid) was also carried out. The catalyst was also found to be viable for a number of aldehydes under optimized conditions.

Current pharmacological therapies for the management of chronic articular diseases are far from being satisfactory, so new strategies need to be investigated. We tested the intra-articular pain relieving properties of a system of molecules from a characterizedCentella asiaticaextract (14G1862) in a rat model of osteoarthritis induced by monoiodoacetate (MIA). 14G1862 (0.2-2 mg mL(-1)) was intra-articularly (i.a.) injected 7 days after MIA, behavioural and histological evaluations were performed 14, 30 and 60 days after treatments. Moreover, the effect of 14G1862 on nitrate production and iNOS expression in RAW 264.7 macrophages stimulated with LPS was assessed. In vitro, 14G1862 treatment attenuated LPS-induced NO production and iNOS expression in a comparable manner to celecoxib. In vivo, 14G1862 significantly reduced mechanical allodynia and hyperalgesia, spontaneous pain and motor alterations starting on day 14 up to day 60. The efficacy was higher or comparable to that evoked by triamcinolone acetonide (100 mu g i.a.) used as reference drug. Histological evaluation highlighted the improvement of several morphological parameters in MIA + 14G1862-treated animals with particularly benefic effects on joint space and fibrin deposition. In conclusion, i.a. treatment withCentella asiaticais a candidate to be a novel effective approach for osteoarthritis therapy.

Iron-gall ink is one of the most important inks in the history of western civilization. The deep black colour results from Fe3+ complexes with phenolic compounds available in gall extracts. Unfortunately, it induces the degradation of both ink and support over time. Furthermore, our knowledge of these complex molecular structures is limited. This work aims to overcome this gap, revealing essential information about the complex structures of these pigments and dyes that will create a breakthrough in the next generation of conservation treatments. It presents the first in-depth phenolic identification and quantification of extracts and inks, prepared with and without gum arabic (an essential additive in medieval recipes). Five representative Iberian recipes were selected and prepared. Their phenolic profile was analysed by HPLC-DAD and HPLC-ESI-MS, which revealed that the phenolic compounds present in higher concentration, in the gall extracts, are pentagalloylglucose and hexagalloylglucose (0.15 +/- 0.01-32 +/- 3 mg/mL), except for one recipe, in which gallic acid is the main phenolic. The influence of the ingredients is also discussed by deconstructing the recipes: extracts of additives as pomegranate peel and solvents used in the extraction of the galls (vinegar and white wine) were characterized.

Herein we report the synthesis of substituted indolizidines and related N-fused bicycles from simple saturated cyclic amines through sequential C-H and C-C bond functionalizations. Inspired by the Norrish-Yang Type II reaction, C-H functionalization of azacycles is achieved by forming alpha-hydroxy-beta-lactams from precursor alpha-ketoamide derivatives under mild, visible light conditions. Selective cleavage of the distal C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) bond in alpha-hydroxy-beta-lactams using a Rh-complex leads to alpha-acyl intermediates which undergo sequential Rh-catalyzed decarbonylation, 1,4-addition to an electrophile, and aldol cyclization, to afford N-fused bicycles including indolizidines. Computational studies provide mechanistic insight into the observed positional selectivity of C-C cleavage, which depends strongly on the groups bound to Rh trans to the phosphine ligand.

A simple and an efficient approach for in situ preparation of palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) in ionic liquid crystal (ILC) microemulsion is described. Microemulsion was formed by using a ternary mixture of triton X-100/ILC/water (in the ratio of 1.4:0.1:8.5). Three such microemulsions-1, 2 and 3 were formed by using three different ILCs namely ammonium ILC containing a cholesterol core (ILC-1), imidazolium ILC bearing a cholesterol core (ILC-2) and imidazolium ILC containing a biphenyl core (ILC-3), respectively. The Pd NPs were characterised using UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. Among the three, microemulsion-2 which was prepared using ILC-2 yielded stable NPs with an average particle size of similar to 20 nm. The NPs prepared in all three emulsions were examined as catalyst for Heck reaction. The catalytic efficiency was analysed for four cross-coupling reactions involving iodobenzene with different substituted alkenes namely methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and styrene. The coupling reactions were completed in a shorter period with good yields. Further, the recyclability test of Pd NPs revealed that the particles showed good activity until third catalytic cycle. The Pd NPs prepared in microemulsion-2 showed better activity compared to those prepared in microemulsions-1 and -3. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The aim of this research was to determine the chemical constituents and toxicity of the oil derived from Alpinia katsumadai seeds against Tribolium castaneum, Liposcelis bostrychophila and Lasioderma serricorne. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and was investigated by gas chromatograhy/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The principal components of the essential oil were methyl cinnamate (64.2 %), cis-4-decen-1-ol (7.3 %) and octahydro-cis-2H-Inden-2-one (6.7 %). The essential oil and the two individial compounds exhibited potential insecticidal activities against three stored product insects. The essential oil possessed contact toxicity against T. castaneum, L. serricorne and L. bostrychophila (LD50 = 52.6 mu g/adult, 17.4 mu g/adult and 35.6 mu g/cm(2), respectively). Methyl cinnamate was the main contributor to its contact activity against T. castaneum, L. serricorne and L. bostrychophila (LD50 = 5.0 mu g/adult, 2.2 mu g/adult and 23.5 mu g/cm, respectively). The contact toxicity and repellent activity of the essential oil and cis-4-decen-1-ol against T. castaneum, L. bostrychophila and L. serricorne were recorded for the first time in this paper. A. katsumadai oil exhibited strong repellent activity against T. castaneum and L. bostrychophila, even at low concentrations. The results provide a basis of the development and utilization as biopesticide for control of insects.

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) cultivate their fungal symbiont within host substrates as the sole source of nutrition on which the larvae and adults must feed. To investigate a possible role for semiochemicals in this interaction, we characterized electrophysiological and behavioral responses of Xylosandrus germanus to volatiles associated with its fungal symbiont Ambrosiella grosmanniae. During still-air walking bioassays, X. germanus exhibited an arrestment response to volatiles of A. grosmanniae, but not antagonistic fungi Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium brunneum, Trichoderma harzianum, the plant pathogen Fusarium proliferatum, or malt extract agar. Solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry identified 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 2-phenylethanol, methyl benzoate and 3-methyl-1-butanol in emissions from A. grosmanniae; the latter two compounds were also detected in emissions from B. bassiana. Concentration-responses using electroantennography documented weak depolarizations to A. grosmanniae fungal volatiles, unlike the comparatively strong response to ethanol. When tested singly in walking bioassays, volatiles identified from A. grosmanniae elicited relatively weak arrestment responses, unlike the responses to ethanol. Xylosandrus germanus also exhibited weak or no long-range attraction to the fungal volatiles when tested singly during field trials in 2016-2018. None of the fungal volatiles enhanced attraction of X. germanus to ethanol when tested singly; in contrast, 2-phenylethanol and 3-methyl-1-butanol consistently reduced attraction to ethanol. Volatiles emitted by A. grosmanniae may represent short-range olfactory cues that could aid in distinguishing their nutritional fungal symbiont from other fungi, but these compounds are not likely to be useful as long-range attractants for improving detection or mass trapping tactics.

Herein described is a sustainable system for hydrogenation that uses solar light as the ultimate source of energy. The system consists of two steps. Solar energy is captured and chemically stored in the first step; exposure of a solution of azaxanthone in ethanol to solar light causes an energy storing dimerization of the ketone to produce a sterically strained 1,2-diol. In the second step, the chemical energy stored in the vicinal diol is released and used for hydrogenation; the diol offers hydrogen onto alkenes and splits back to azaxanthone, which is easily recovered and reused repeatedly for capturing solar energy.

p-Coumaric acid is a known inhibitor of tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the initial steps of the melanin synthesis in human and other species. However, its low lipophilicity impairs its penetration through skin and efficacy as antimelanogenic agent indeed. Accordingly, this paper reports the assessment of several coumaric acid derivatives as tyrosinase inhibitors and antimelanogenic agents in in vitro, in silico and ex vivo assays. The compounds were designed with modifications in the aromatic and acid moieties of p-coumaric acid, being the coumarate esters the most promising derivatives. The compounds showed higher tyrosinase inhibitory activity (pIC(50), 3.7-4.2) than the parent acid, being compounds 1d, 1e and 1f the most potent inhibitors. Docking analysis showed that these esters are competitive inhibitors per se, and act independently of a redox mechanism as suggested by DPPH assays. Moreover, the esters showed efficacy in reducing the melanin deposition in human skin fragments at 0.1% concentration, especially compound le. In summary, there is an important equilibria between tyrosinase affinity and lipophilicity that must be considered to get effective antimelanogenic agents with adequate permeability in the skin.

This study investigated the impacts of selective sole carbon source-induced micropollutants (MPs) cometabolism of Chlorella sp. by: (i) extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), superoxide dismutase and peroxidase enzyme production; (ii) MPs removal efficiency and cometabolism rate; (iii) MPs’ potential degradation products identification; and (iv) degradation pathways and validation using the Eawag database to differentiate the cometabolism of Chlorella sp. with other microbes. Adding the sole carbon sources in the presence of MPs increased EPS and enzyme concentrations from 2 to 100-fold in comparison with only sole carbon sources. This confirmed that MPs cometabolism had occurred. The removal efficiencies of tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, and bisphenol A ranged from 16-99%, 32-92%, and 58-99%, respectively. By increasing EPS and enzyme activity, the MPs concentrations accumulated in microalgae cells also fell 400-fold. The cometabolism process resulted in several degradation products of MPs. This study drew an insightful understanding of cometabolism for MPs remediation in wastewater. Based on the results, proper carbon sources for microalgae can be selected for practical applications to remediate MPs in wastewater while simultaneously recovering biomass for several industries and gaining revenue.
