The Summary of main observation and conclusion Selective hydrogenation of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyls into saturated carbonyls is important to obtain remunerative products. However, it is still a challenge to achieve high activity and selectivity under mild conditions. Herein, Pd, Ir and bimetallic Pd-Ir nanoparticles were uniformly deposited with high dispersity on the surface of SiC by a facile impregnation method, respectively. The as-prepared Pd/SiC catalysts efficiently hydrogenate cinnamaldehyde to hydrocinnamaldehyde at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, and the activity of Pd/SiC is observed further enhanced by adding Ir component (conversion of 100%). In addition, the dependence of Pd-Ir catalyst activity on Pd/Ir molar ratio confirms a synergistic effect between Ir and Pd, which originates from the electron transfer between Pd and Ir.

The development of catalysts capable of catalyzing amidation of esters with amines to construct amides under mild conditions is of great importance. Compared to aliphatic amines, the direct catalytic amidation of esters with less nucleophilic aromatic amines is rather difficult. Employing simple lanthanide tris (amide) complexes Ln[N (SiMe3)(2)](3)(mu-Cl)Li (THF)(3) as the catalysts, it was found a broad range of aromatic amines and esters were efficiently converted into various amides in good yields under mild conditions. A plausible mechanism for this transformation was experimentally supported as starting from an amide exchange reaction between the lanthanide tris (amide) complex and the substrate amine.

Although the evolutionary significance of the early-diverging flowering plant Amborella (Amborella trichopoda Baill.) is widely recognized, its metabolic landscape, particularly specialized metabolites, is currently underexplored. In this work, we analyzed the metabolomes of Amborella tissues using liquid chromatography high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-HR-ESI-MS). By matching the mass spectra of Amborella metabolites with those of authentic phytochemical standards in the publicly accessible libraries, 63, 39, and 21 compounds were tentatively identified in leaves, stems, and roots, respectively. Free amino acids, organic acids, simple sugars, cofactors, as well as abundant glycosylated and/or methylated phenolic specialized metabolites were observed in Amborella leaves. Diverse metabolites were also detected in stems and roots, including those that were not identified in leaves. To understand the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites with glycosyl and methyl modifications, families of small molecule UDP-dependent glycosyltransferases (UGTs) and O-methyltransferases (OMTs) were identified in the Amborella genome and the InterPro database based on conserved functional domains. Of the 17 phylogenetic groups of plant UGTs (A-Q) defined to date, Amborella UGTs are absent from groups B, N, and P, but they are highly abundant in group L. Among the 25 Amborella OMTs, 7 cluster with caffeoyl-coenzyme A (CCoA) OMTs involved in lignin and phenolic metabolism, whereas 18 form a clade with plant OMTs that methylate hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonoids, or alkaloids. Overall, this first report of metabolomes and candidate metabolic genes in Amborella provides a starting point to a better understanding of specialized metabolites and biosynthetic enzymes in this basal lineage of flowering plants.

While the popularity of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has rapidly increased in recent years, the regulation around the composition of such e-cigarettes has lagged. Many components of the e-cigarettes and liquid flavorings (e-liquids) used in these products are not disclosed, and the potential for exposure to toxic compounds via use of these products is significant. Reported herein is an analysis of the components of e-cigarettes as well as of three popular e-liquids via gas chromatography – mass spectrometry. These results show that components of the e-cigarette contain large quantities of aromatic compounds, and that the e-liquids contain smaller quantities of potentially concerning additives. Most notably, 96% of the extract from the filter was composed of benzyl chloride, a potent DNA alkylating agent, a result which should be of significant concern to consumers, regulatory agencies, and e-cigarette manufacturers.

We report the [Ru(p-cymene)(L-proline)Cl] ([Ru1])-catalyzed cyclization of 1,4,2-dioxazol-5-ones to form dihydroquinoline-2-ones in excellent yields with excellent regioselectivity via a formal intramolecular arene C(sp(2))-H amidation. The reactions of the 2- and 4-substituted aryl dioxazolones proceeds initially through spirolactamization via electrophilic amidation at the arene site, which is para or ortho to the substituent. A Hammett correlation study showed that the spirolactamization is likely to occur by electrophilic nitrenoid attack at the arene, which is characterized by a negative rho value of -0.73.

From the perspective of green chemistry, in catalytic systems, being low cost and eco-friendly, in addition to high chemical and thermal stability, are requirements of support materials. In this regard, we used apple seed starch as an accessible, nontoxic, and cost-effective support material. In order to take advantage of magnetic separation, the magnetite nanoparticles were chosen as an ideal pair for apple seed starch. Furthermore, during the Schiff base reaction, the magnetic apple seed starch was functionalized with 2,2 ‘-furil along with amine functionality to be used as a bio-support for immobilization of cobalt. The introduction of cobalt had a significant effect on the greenness of the catalyst and reducing its price. FT-IR, TGA, XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, VSM, ninhydrin test, element mapping, AAS, and EDX analysis were applied to characterize the newly prepared catalyst. The effectiveness of this novel Schiff base supported catalyst was evaluated in the Mizoroki-Heck and the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions. High reactivity and selectivity were among the most prominent characteristics of the catalyst as compared to previously reported catalysts. The longevity test and hot filtration showed the ability to use the catalyst at least 5 times and negligible cobalt leaching during the reaction, respectively. This work is the first report on the usage of apple seed starch as a supporting catalyst and 2,2 ‘-furil as a ligand in the catalyst modifications and catalytic activity. Accordingly, this can be the beginning of an attractive way in the design and synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts.

A Ni salt of phosphomolybdic acid (NiHPMA) was synthesized and characterized by various physico-chemical techniques such as EDX, UV-Visible spectroscopy, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy and XPS. FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy confirm the presence of Ni as a counter cation while UV-Visible and XPS studies to confirm the presence of Ni(ii) in the catalyst. The catalyst was evaluated for its bi-functional activity towards the tandem conversion of benzaldehyde to ethyl benzoate and it was found that very small amounts of Ni (2.64 x 10(-3)mmol) enhance the selectivity towards benzoate. A detailed mechanistic study was carried out by UV-Visible and Raman spectroscopy to confirm that both intermediate species, Mo-peroxo and Ni-oxo, are responsible for higher selectivity towards esters. Further, a study to determine the effect of addenda atoms (heteropoly acid) was also carried out. The catalyst was also found to be viable for a number of aldehydes under optimized conditions.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti transmits the virus that causes dengue, yellow fever, Zika and Chikungunya viruses, and in several regions of the planet represents a vector of great clinical importance. In terms of mortality and morbidity, infections caused by Ae. aegypti are among the most serious arthropod transmitted viral diseases. The present study investigated the larvicidal potential of seventeen cinnamic acid derivatives against fourth stage Ae. aegypti larvae. The larvicide assays were performed using larval mortality rates to determine lethal concentration (LC50). Compounds containing the medium alkyl chains butyl cinnamate (7) and pentyl cinnamate (8) presented excellent larvicidal activity with LC50 values of around 0.21-0.17 mM, respectively. While among the derivatives with aryl substituents, the best LC50 result was 0.55 mM for benzyl cinnamate (13). The tested derivatives were natural compounds and in pharmacology and antiparasitic studies, many have been evaluated using biological models for environmental and toxicological safety. Molecular modeling analyses suggest that the larvicidal activity of these compounds might be due to a multi-target mechanism of action involving inhibition of a carbonic anhydrase (CA), a histone deacetylase (HDAC2), and two sodium-dependent cation-chloride co-transporters (CCC2 e CCC3).
