BACKGROUND Thrips Anaphothrips obscurus are one of the cosmopolitan major pests feeding on cereals and other grasses. In order to develop alternatives of chemical insecticides for thrips control, based on fumigant activity screening and evaluation of 22 essential oil (EO) compounds against the thrips, the binary interactions of methyl salicylate and carvacrol (MS-C) with high fumigant toxicity were studied systematically by bioassay and field trials. RESULTS The bioassay results showed that six in 22 EO compounds had high fumigant toxicity against both the second-instar nymphs and adults of A. obscurus, including methyl salicylate, carvacrol, thymol, trans-cinnamaldehyde, diallyl trisulfide, and L-perillaldehyde. Furthermore, the combination of methyl salicylate mixed with carvacrol at a volume ratio of 5:5 exhibited the most significant synergism against A. obscurus, with a poison ratio value of 1.32 and a co-toxicity coefficient of 151.15. The optimal formulation of microemulsion (ME) was composed of 5% methyl salicylate, 5% carvacrol, 46% adjuvant and 44% deionized water. The result of dynamic light scattering and stability showed that MS-C 10% ME was a transparent, single-phase and homogeneous liquid system. Field trials indicated that the ME displayed a significant control efficacy of about 89.17% on thrips in peppers, and 82.59% in broad bean on the seventh day post application with a dosage of 600.0 g A.I hm(-2), respectively. CONCLUSION The binary combination of MS-C possesses strikingly synergistic action against thrips A. obscurus, and the MS-C 10% ME has the potential to be developed as a botanical pesticide product for thrips control. Various bromophenylalkenes were reductively photodebrominated by using 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1H-benzo-[d]imidazoline (DMBI) and 9,10-dicyanoanthracene. With deuterated DMBI analogs (the most effective was DMBI-d(11)), satisfactory to excellent isotopic yields were obtained. DMBI-d(11) could also be regenerated from the reaction mixtures with a recovery rate of up to 50%. The combination of the photodebromination reaction with conventional methods for bromoalkene synthesis enables sequential monodeuteration of a double bond without the necessity of a metal catalyst.

Purpose: To investigate by in silico screening the anti-inflammatory constituents of Cinnamomum cassia twigs. Methods: Information on the constituents of C. cassia twigs was retrieved from the online Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) database and literature. Inflammation-related target proteins were identified from DrugBank, Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), Therapeutic Target Database (TTD), Genetic Association Database (GAD), and PharmGKB. The identified compounds were filtered by Lipinski’s rules with Discovery Studio software. The Libdock module was used to perform molecular docking; LibdockScores and default cutoff values for hydrogen bonds and van der Weals interactions were recorded. LibdockScores between the prototype ligand and target protein were set as the threshold; compounds with higher LibdockScores than threshold were regarded as active compounds. Cytoscape software was used to construct active constituent-target protein interaction networks. Results: Sixty-nine potential inflammatory constituents with good drug-like properties in C. cassia twigs were screened in silico based on molecular docking and network pharmacology analysis. JAK2, mPEGS-1, COX-2, IL-1 beta, and PPAR gamma were considered the five most important target proteins. Compounds such as methyl dihydromelilotoside, hierochin B, dihydromelilotoside, dehydrodiconiferyl alcohol, balanophonin, phenethyl (E)-3-[4-methoxyphenyl]-2-propenoate, quercetin, and luteolin each interacted with more than six of the selected target proteins. Conclusion: C. cassia twigs possess active compounds with good drug-like properties that can potentially be developed to treat inflammation with multi-components on multi-targets.

Artemisia fragrans is an aromatic and perennial herb with green silver leaves and yellow flowers, widely distributed in Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia and Turkey. The plant and its essential oil (EO) are used in traditional medicine and have economic value. In this study, the composition, antibacterial and antioxidant activities of 16 A. fragrans essential oil samples collected from different habitats in Iran were analyzed. A total of 85 compounds were detected using GC-MS analysis, the major constituents being camphor (9.91-34.44 %), alpha-thujone (19.22-42.63 %) and 1,8-cineole (12.57-31.87 %). Davanone D, alpha-cadinol, verbenene, ortho-oci-men were detected in the analysis as the new components for this species and are first reported by us. Anti-bacterial activity and minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of EOs were tested on Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Proteus vulgaris (Gram-negative strains) Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococ-cus epidermidis and Bacillus subtilis (Gram-positive strains). The EOs showed better inhibitory effects against Gram-negative strains compared to Gram-positive ones. Among the EOs, E7 (IC50 = 9.1 mu g/mL) population showed the highest radical scavenging capacity, which was equal to the positive control (butylated hyroxytoluene). The quantitative and qualitative variability of the studied EOs and their antibacterial and antioxidant activities may be recommended for pharmacological and cosmetic industries.

A biocompatible hybrid system composed of graphene oxide (GO), chitosan (CS) and ionic liquid decorated cyclodextrin nanosponge (CDNS-IL) is synthesized and applied for the immobilization of Pd and Fe3O4 nanoparticles to furnish a magnetic catalyst, Fe3O4/Pd@Hybrid. The justification for designing this hybrid system was benefiting from the capability of CDNS for formation of inclusion complex with substrates and acting as phase transfer agent. Moreover, IL itself could exert catalytic activity and improve anchoring Pd, while magnetic nano particles could render the catalyst easily separable. Moreover, the functional groups on CS could contribute to Pd anchoring. The catalytic activity of Fe3O4/Pd@Hybrid for promoting hydrogenation of nitro arenes and two coupling reactions in aqueous media was investigated. The results established that the catalyst could efficiently promote all the reactions under mild reaction condition. The investigation of the catalyst recyclability confirmed that the catalyst could be recycled for three reaction runs. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The aromatic perennial plant Alpinia zerumbet (Pers.) Burtt & Smith (Zingiberaceae) is widely distributed in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of Japan, from southern Kyushu to the Ryukyu Islands. Its essential oil has a distinct aroma and antioxidant activity but is expensive due to low extraction efficiencies. Applying underwater shockwave pretreatment to A. zerumbet leaves is expected to enable more effective essential oil extraction during subsequent steam distillation. Thus, we subjected A. zerumbet leaves to shockwave pretreatment and analyzed its effects on the essential oil yield and components. Multiple cracks formed in the cell walls via spalling destruction induced by the shockwaves, creating permeation pathways that improved the passage of water vapor and greatly increased the essential oil yield. Moreover, the pretreatment increased the antioxidant activity of the essential oil and its water extract. Underwater shockwave processing selectively and effectively destroyed the fiber and/or cell structures of the leaves, resulting in efficient essential oil extraction. This novel process has the potential for application to many extraction processes, such as the extraction of compounds from medicinal plants. The dynamic control of instantaneous high pressures based on underwater shockwaves could pave the way for a new field of industrial technology. (C) 2020 Institution of Chemical Engineers. A key event in the directed evolution of enzymes is the systematic use of mutagenesis and selection, a process that can give rise to mutant libraries containing millions of protein variants. To this day, the functional analysis and identification of active variants among such high numbers of mutational possibilities is not a trivial task. Here, we describe a combinatorial semi-rational approach to partly overcome this challenge and help design smaller and smarter mutant libraries. By adapting a liquid medium transesterification assay in organic solvent conditions with a combination of virtual docking, iterative saturation mutagenesis, and residue interaction network (RIN) analysis, we engineered lipase B from P. antarctica (CalB) to improve enzyme recognition and activity against the bulky aromatic substrates and flavoring agents methyl cinnamate and methyl salicylate. Substrate-imprinted docking was used to target active-site positions involved in enzyme-substrate and enzyme-product complexes, in addition to identifying ‘hot spots’ most likely to yield active variants. This iterative semi-rational design strategy allowed selection of CalB variants exhibiting increased activity in just two rounds of site-saturation mutagenesis. Beneficial replacements were observed by screening only 0.308% of the theoretical library size, illustrating how semi-rational approaches with targeted diversity can quickly facilitate the discovery of improved activity variants relevant to a number of biotechnological applications.

The purpose of this study was to inspect the suitability of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicumL.) for phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated areas in urban areas of Egypt through study the impact of the most common pollutants in Egypt: cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) on morphological traits, and essential oil (EOs) content of sweet basil. The experiment was done under greenhouse conditions. The applied treatments tested in this experiment for Cd concentrations were 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 ppm and for Pb: 100, 350, 750, 1,000, 1,500 ppm. The composition and amount of EOs had been determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated that the contaminated soil had a negative impact on morphological traits development of basil (e.g., the decline in fresh and dry weight). The increase in Cd and Pb concentrations enhanced the EOs yield of sweet basil. In general, basil cultivation in the Cd and Pb contaminated soils could cause undesirable impacts on morphological traits; however, the presence of these metals has a major influence on the EOs yield, composition, and phytoremediation of the soil.

We report the synthesis of magnetically separable Fe3O4@Silica-Threonine-Pd-0 magnetic nanoparticles with a core-shell structure. After synthesis of Fe3O4@Silica, threonine as an efficient stabilizer/ligand was bonded to the surface of Fe3O4@Silica. Then, palladium nanoparticles were generated on the threonine-modified catalyst. The threonine stabilizer helps to generate palladium nanoparticles of small size (less than 4 nm) with high dispersity and uniformity. Magnetically separable Fe3O4@Silica-Threonine-Pd-0 nanocatalyst was fully characterized using various techniques. This nanocatalyst efficiently catalysed the Heck cross-coupling reaction of a variety of substrates in water medium as a green, safe and inexpensive solvent at 80 degrees C. The Fe3O4@Silica-Threonine-Pd-0 catalyst was used for at least eight successful consecutive runs with palladium leaching of only 0.05%.

Background: Predictors of hospitalisation in people with HIV (PLHIV) in the contemporary treatment era are not well understood. Methods: This ASTRA sub-study used clinic data linkage and record review to determine occurrence of hospitalisations among 798 PLHIV from baseline questionnaire (February to December 2011) until 1 June 2018. Associations of baseline social circumstance, socioeconomic, lifestyle, mental health, demographic and clinical factors with repeated all-cause hospitalisation from longitudinal data were investigated using Prentice-Williams-Peterson models. Associations were also assessed in 461 individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART) with viral load <= 50 copies/ml and CD4 count >= 500 cells/ mu l. Findings: Rate of hospitalisation was 5.8/100 person-years (95% CI: 5.1-6.5). Adjusted for age, demographic group and time with diagnosed HIV, the following social circumstance, socioeconomic, lifestyle and mental health factors predicted hospitalisation: no stable partner (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR)=1.59; 95% CI=1.16-2.20 vs living with partner); having children (aHR=1.50; 1.08-2.10); non-employment (aHR=1.56; 1.07-2.27 for unemployment; aHR=2.39; 1.70-3.37 for sick/disabled vs employed); rented housing (aHR=1.72; 1.26-2.37 vs homeowner); not enough money for basic needs (aHR=1.82; 1.19-2.78 vs enough); current smoking (aHR=1.39; 1.02-1.91 vs never); recent injection-drug use (aHR=2.11; 1.30-3.43); anxiety symptoms (aHRs=1.39; 1.01-1.91, 2.06; 1.43-2.95 for mild and moderate vs none/minimal); depressive symptoms (aHRs=1.67; 1.17-2.38, 1.91; 1.30-2.78 for moderate and severe vs none/minimal); treated/untreated depression (aHRs=1.65; 1.03-2.64 for treated depression only, 1.87; 1.39-2.52 for depressive symptoms only; 1.53; 1.05-2.24; for treated depression and depressive symptoms, versus neither). Associations were broadly similar in those with controlled HIV and high CD4. Interpretation: Social circumstance, socioeconomic disadvantage, adverse lifestyle factors and poorer mental health are strong predictors of hospitalisation in PLHIV, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and care.
