A simple and an efficient approach for in situ preparation of palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) in ionic liquid crystal (ILC) microemulsion is described. Microemulsion was formed by using a ternary mixture of triton X-100/ILC/water (in the ratio of 1.4:0.1:8.5). Three such microemulsions-1, 2 and 3 were formed by using three different ILCs namely ammonium ILC containing a cholesterol core (ILC-1), imidazolium ILC bearing a cholesterol core (ILC-2) and imidazolium ILC containing a biphenyl core (ILC-3), respectively. The Pd NPs were characterised using UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. Among the three, microemulsion-2 which was prepared using ILC-2 yielded stable NPs with an average particle size of similar to 20 nm. The NPs prepared in all three emulsions were examined as catalyst for Heck reaction. The catalytic efficiency was analysed for four cross-coupling reactions involving iodobenzene with different substituted alkenes namely methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and styrene. The coupling reactions were completed in a shorter period with good yields. Further, the recyclability test of Pd NPs revealed that the particles showed good activity until third catalytic cycle. The Pd NPs prepared in microemulsion-2 showed better activity compared to those prepared in microemulsions-1 and -3. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

I found the field of Chemistry very interesting. Saw the article Enzyme pretreatment improves the recovery of bioactive phytochemicals from sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) leaves and their hydrodistilled residue by-products, and potentiates their biological activities published in 2020.0. Recommanded Product: 103-26-4, Reprint Addresses Hosni, K (corresponding author), Inst Natl Rech & Anal Phys Chim, Sidi Thabet 2020, Tunisia.. The CAS is 103-26-4. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of Methyl 3-phenyl-2-propenoate

In the present study, the effect of enzyme pretreatment on essential oil recoveries from sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) leaves was evaluated. Moreover, the consideration on the use of hydrodistilled residue by-products as a source of bioactive phytochemicals with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and repellent effects against the stored-grain pest Tribolium castaneum was examined. Results showed that the enzymatic pretreatment increased the extraction yield of essential oil by 400, 417, and 478% in hemicellulase-, cellulase-, and viscozyme-treated samples, respectively. Phenylpropanoids including methyl cinnamate, methyl eugenol, eugenol and estragol were found as the main components, and were particularly abundant in cellulase-treated samples. From the hydrodistilled residue of enzyme-treated samples, better recoveries of total phenols (TPC) (258.3-470.9 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoids (TFC) (59.4-94.3 mg QE/g extract) were observed. Using the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, a strong antioxidant activity of the rosmarinic-rich extract was observed. Such an activity which was mediated through electron transfer mechanism was highly correlated with the TPC, TFC and rosmarinic acid content. The in vitro bioassay showed that methanol extract (6.29 and 12.58 mu L/cm(2)) had repellent activity against the stored-grain pest Tribolium castaneum. These results suggest the potential of enzyme pretreatment to promote the use of hydrodistilled residue by-products as a valuable source of natural antioxidants and repellents ingredients. Methyl (E)-cinnamate is a specialized metabolite that occurs in a variety of land plants. In flowering plants, it is synthesized by cinnamic acid methyltransferase (CAMT) that belongs to the SABATH family. While rarely reported in bryophytes, methyl (E)-cinnamate is produced by some liverworts of the Conocephalum conicum complex, including C. salebrosum. In axenically grown thalli of C. salebrosum, methyl (E)-cinnamate was detected as the dominant compound. To characterize its biosynthesis, six full-length SABATH genes, which were designated CsSABATH1-6, were cloned from C. salebrosum. These six genes showed different levels of expression in the thalli of C. salebrosum. Next, CsSABATH1-6 were expressed in Escherichia coli to produce recombinant proteins, which were tested for methyltransferase activity with cinnamic acid and a few related compounds as substrates. Among the six SABATH proteins, CsSABATH6 exhibited the highest level of activity with cinnamic acid. It was renamed CsCAMT. The apparent Km value of CsCAMT using (E)-cinnamic acid as substrate was determined to be 50.5 mu M. In contrast, CsSABATH4 was demonstrated to function as salicylic acid methyltransferase and was renamed CsSAMT. Interestingly, the CsCAMT gene from a sabinene-dominant chemotype of C. salebrosum is identical to that of the methyl (E)-cinnamate-dominant chemotype. Structure models for CsCAMT, CsSAMT and one flowering plant CAMT (ObCCMT1) in complex with (E)-cinnamic acid and salicylic acid were built, which provided structural explanations to substrate specificity of these three enzymes. In phylogenetic analysis, CsCAMT and ObCCMT1 were in different clades, implying that methyl (E)-cinnamate biosynthesis in bryophytes and flowering plants originated through convergent evolution.

Background: Maternal mental illness is a significant public health problem during the perinatal period and beyond. Little is known about how social determinants of health (SDOH) affect maternal mental health. Materials and Methods: We used cross-sectional data from the 2016 to 2017 National Survey of Children’s Health with 19,127 mothers of a nationally representative sample of U.S. children aged 0-5. We estimated the prevalence of poor reported mental health (reported as fair/poor) among mothers with children aged 0-5 by SDOH. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine factors associated with poor maternal mental health. Results: Approximately 4.5% of mothers with children aged 0-5 reported having poor mental health in 2016-2017. Postadjustment and mothers’ poor mental health were significantly associated with age (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 18-20 years: 2.77, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.35-5.67; 21-24 years AOR: 2.14, 95% CI: 1.22-3.73, and 30-34 years AOR: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.13-3.43), U.S.-born status (AOR: 2.31, 95% CI: 1.48-3.63), poor physical health (AOR: 8.69, 95% CI: 5.81-13.02), having a child with a special health care need (AOR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.03-2.64), experiencing food insecurity (afford enough food, yet, unhealthy [AOR: 2.74, 95% CI: 1.59-4.70] and sometimes/often not afford enough food [AOR: 3.20, 95% CI: 1.76-5.84]), and low social capital (AOR: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.04-3.73). Conclusion: Mothers with children aged 0-5 who had poor physical health and experienced food insecurity were at the greatest risk for poor mental health. Integrated perinatal and behavioral health models, screening, and referrals may help identify and treat mothers experiencing these issues.

Vicinal dibromides and dichlorides are important commodity chemicals and indispensable synthetic intermediates in modern chemistry that are traditionally synthesized using hazardous elemental chlorine and bromine. Meanwhile, the environmental persistence of halogenated pollutants necessitates improved approaches to accelerate their remediation. Here, we introduce an electrochemically assisted shuttle (e-shuttle) paradigm for the facile and scalable interconversion of alkenes and vicinal dihalides, a class of reactions that can be used both to synthesize useful dihalogenated molecules from simple alkenes and to recycle waste material through retro-dihalogenation. The reaction is demonstrated using 1,2-dibromoethane, as well as 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane or 1,2-dichloroethane, to dibrominate or dichlorinate, respectively, a wide range of alkenes in a simple setup with inexpensive graphite electrodes. Conversely, the hexachlorinated persistent pollutant lindane could be fully dechlorinated to benzene in soil samples using simple alkene acceptors.

This study aimed to comparatively analyze the volatile flavor of rooibos tea (Aspalathus linearis) obtained by two commonly used flavor extraction methods, simultaneous distillation-extraction (SDE) and steam distillation under reduced pressure (DRP). The tea obtained by the two extraction methods, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to identify volatile aroma-related compounds. Descriptive sensory analysis of the extracted rooibos tea flavor was carried out by a trained panel (n = 7). Fifty volatile compounds were identified, including 26 and 25 aroma-active compounds by SDE (45.9 mu g/g) and DRP (37.5 mu g/g), respectively. SDE recovered larger quantities of alcohols, acids, and esters, whereas DRP was useful for analyzing thermally unstable volatile compounds, including various alcohols, aldehydes, and hydrocarbons. Descriptive sensory analysis revealed that ketones and phenolic compounds may be responsible for the sensory attributes woody and grassy green, whereas the aldehydes and acidic compounds may contribute to floral and fruity.

Palladium colloids obtained from the degradation of Hermann-Beller palladacycle proved to be an efficient catalytic system in combination with silver oxide as a selective oxidant for the oxidative esterification of differently substituted benzyl alcohols in MeOH as solvent. Excellent reactivity exhibited by the catalytic system also allowed the alcoholic coupling partner to be changed from MeOH to a wide range of alcohols having diverse functionalities. The mildness of the developed protocol also made it possible to employ propargyl alcohol as the coupling partner without any observation of any interference of the terminal alkyne. Selective oxidative coupling of a primary alcoholic functional group over secondary in the case of glycols and glycerols was also made possible using the developed catalyst system. To test the relevancy of Pd/Ag combined catalysis mixed Pd/Ag colloids were synthesized, characterized by TEM, XRD and XPS and applied to oxidative-esterification successfully.

Bearded irises are ornamental plants with distinctive floral fragrance grown worldwide. To identify the floral scent profiles, twenty-seven accessions derived from three bearded iris, including Iris. germanica, I. pumila and I. pallida were used to investigate the composition and relative contents of floral scent components by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 219 floral scent components were detected in blooming flowers. The scent profile varied significantly among and within the three investigated species. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that terpenes, alcohols and esters contributed the most to the floral scent components and 1-caryophyllene, linalool, citronellol, methyl cinnamate, -cedrene, thujopsene, methyl myristate, linalyl acetate, isosafrole, nerol, geraniol were identified as the major components. In a hierarchical cluster analysis, twenty-seven accessions could be clustered into six different groups, most of which had representative scent components such as linalool, citronellyl acetate, thujopsene, citronellol, methyl cinnamate and 1-caryophyllene. Our findings provide a theoretical reference for floral scent evaluation and breeding of bearded irises.

Objective: To investigate the efficacies of 12 essential oil (EO) formulations from three Zingiberaceae plants (Alpinia galanga, Curcuma zedoaria, and Zingiber cassumunar) individually and in combination with an augmenting Eucalyptus globulus (E. globulus) EO against females of Aedes albopictus (Ae. albopictus) and Anopheles minimus (An. minimus). Methods: These formulations were evaluated for their ovicidal, oviposition deterrent and adulticidal activities against Ae. albopictus and An. minimus by a topical method, a double-choice method and a WHO susceptibility test, respectively. Results: It was found that all formulations of Zingiberaceae plants EOs augmented with E. globulus EO were more effective in oviposition deterrent, ovicidal, and adulticidal activities against the two mosquito species than all of the formulations used without E. globulus EO. Their oviposition deterrent, ovicidal and adulticidal activities were equivalent to those of 10% w/v cypennethrin. In contrast, 70% v/v ethyl alcohol as a control alone was not effective at all. The highest synergistic effect in effective repellency against Ae. albopictus was achieved by 5% Alpinia galanga EO + 5% E. globulus EO and against An. minimus was 5% Zingiber cassumunar EO + 5% E. globulus EO. Moreover, the highest synergistic effects in ovicidal activities against Ae. albopictus and An. minimus were achieved by 10% Zingiber cassumunar EO + 10% E. globulus EO and 5% Curcuma zedoaria EO + 5% E. globulus EO, respectively. For the adulticidal activities, the highest synergistic effect against two mosquitoes was achieved by 5% Curcuma zedoaria EO + 5% E. globulus EO. Conclusions: These results suggest that Zingiberaceae plant EOs augmented with E. globulus EO have a high potential to be developed into oviposition deterrent, ovicidal, and adulticidal agents for controlling populations of Ae. albopictus and An. minimus.
