Background: Predictors of hospitalisation in people with HIV (PLHIV) in the contemporary treatment era are not well understood. Methods: This ASTRA sub-study used clinic data linkage and record review to determine occurrence of hospitalisations among 798 PLHIV from baseline questionnaire (February to December 2011) until 1 June 2018. Associations of baseline social circumstance, socioeconomic, lifestyle, mental health, demographic and clinical factors with repeated all-cause hospitalisation from longitudinal data were investigated using Prentice-Williams-Peterson models. Associations were also assessed in 461 individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART) with viral load <= 50 copies/ml and CD4 count >= 500 cells/ mu l. Findings: Rate of hospitalisation was 5.8/100 person-years (95% CI: 5.1-6.5). Adjusted for age, demographic group and time with diagnosed HIV, the following social circumstance, socioeconomic, lifestyle and mental health factors predicted hospitalisation: no stable partner (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR)=1.59; 95% CI=1.16-2.20 vs living with partner); having children (aHR=1.50; 1.08-2.10); non-employment (aHR=1.56; 1.07-2.27 for unemployment; aHR=2.39; 1.70-3.37 for sick/disabled vs employed); rented housing (aHR=1.72; 1.26-2.37 vs homeowner); not enough money for basic needs (aHR=1.82; 1.19-2.78 vs enough); current smoking (aHR=1.39; 1.02-1.91 vs never); recent injection-drug use (aHR=2.11; 1.30-3.43); anxiety symptoms (aHRs=1.39; 1.01-1.91, 2.06; 1.43-2.95 for mild and moderate vs none/minimal); depressive symptoms (aHRs=1.67; 1.17-2.38, 1.91; 1.30-2.78 for moderate and severe vs none/minimal); treated/untreated depression (aHRs=1.65; 1.03-2.64 for treated depression only, 1.87; 1.39-2.52 for depressive symptoms only; 1.53; 1.05-2.24; for treated depression and depressive symptoms, versus neither). Associations were broadly similar in those with controlled HIV and high CD4. Interpretation: Social circumstance, socioeconomic disadvantage, adverse lifestyle factors and poorer mental health are strong predictors of hospitalisation in PLHIV, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and care. We identified the most popular electronic cigarette (EC) refill fluids using an Internet survey and local and online sales information, quantified their flavor chemicals, and evaluated cytotoxicities of the fluids and flavor chemicals. Berries/Fruits/Citrus was the most popular EC refill fluid flavor category. Twenty popular EC refill fluids were purchased from local shops, and the ingredient flavor chemicals were identified and quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Total flavor chemical concentrations ranged from 0.6 to 27.9 mg/ml, and in 95% of the fluids, total flavor concentration was greater than nicotine concentration. The 20 most popular refill fluids contained 99 quantifiable flavor chemicals; each refill fluid contained 22 to 47 flavor chemicals, most being esters. Some chemicals were found frequently, and several were present in most products. At a 1% concentration, 80% of the refill fluids were cytotoxic in the MTT assay. Six pure standards of the flavor chemicals found at the highest concentrations in the two most cytotoxic refill fluids were effective in the MTT assay, and ethyl maltol, which was in over 50% of the products, was the most cytotoxic. These data show that the cytotoxicity of some popular refill fluids can be attributed to their high concentrations of flavor chemicals.

Methyl cinnamate (M-1) and maleic anhydride (M-2), which are both non-homopolymerizable 1,2-disubtituted vinyl monomers, were radically copolymerized in toluene to result in 1:1 alternating copolymers. The 1:1 alternating sequence was confirmed by not only the monomer reactivity ratios obtained by using the terminal model fitted by the Kelen-Tiidos method (r(1) = 0.0035, r(2) = 0.069) but also MALDI-TOF-MS analysis of the copolymers with controlled molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions (M-w/M-n = 1.20), which were prepared by RAFT copolymerization using 2-cyano-2-propyl ethyl trithiocarbonate (CPETC) as the RAFT agent. The maleic anhydride unit was transformed into two methyl ester groups by hydrolysis followed by methylation. Since the propagation of methyl cinnamate occurred regioselectively via a styrenic radical, the methyl esterified copolymers possessed ABAA sequence-controlled substituted polymethylene structures (A: methyl ester, B: phenyl). The sequence-controlled substituted polymethylene showed good thermal properties (T-d5 = 323 degrees C, T-g >= 192 degrees C) due to the rigid main-chain structures, which possessed a phenyl group on every fourth main-chain carbon in the repeating units in addition to three methyl ester groups on the other main-chain carbons. Block copolymers consisting of the rigid substituted polymethylene and soft poly(methyl acrylate) were also synthesized by RAFT polymerization.

The fumigant antibacterial activities of 50 plant essential oils belonging to 10 families were investigated against Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Among the test plant essential oils, Cinnamomum verum (cinnamon bark) essential oil showed the most potent fumigant antibacterial activity. When we investigated the antibacterial activities of compounds identified from cinnamon bark essential oil and 9 congeners of trans-cinnamaldehyde, lengths of inhibition zone of trans-cinnamaldehyde, salicylaldehyde and hydrocinnamaldehyde were 1.28, 1.73, and 1.24 cm at 0.625 mg/paper disc concentration, respectively. To determine the mode of action of trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde, intercellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and cell membrane integrity were determined using a confocal laser scanning microscopy. Furthermore, we compared the up- and down-regulated gene expression of A. tumefaciens treated with trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde with that of untreated A. tumefaciens. With cutoffs of vertical bar log2FC vertical bar > 1 and FDR < 0.05, 29 and 43 down-regulated genes and 27 and 117 up-regulated genes were found in the treatment of trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde, respectively. Based on the ROS generation results, cell membrane integrity assay, and gene expression, we conclude that the antibacterial mode of action of trans-cinnamaldehyde and salicylaldehyde is ROS generation by the Fenton reaction caused by the down-regulation of an ATP synthesis-related gene cluster, corrupted iron ion homeostasis, and a corrupted ROS defense mechanism. The high concentration of ROS damaged the A. tumefaciens cell membrane, which caused cell death. HPLC of Formula: C10H10O2. Palladium chloride and chlorinated poly (vinyl chloride) (CPVC) mixture were prepared into homogeneous solution, followed by electrospinning to make uniform nanofibers with average diameter of similar to 460 nm. Then, these composite nanofibers were treated in ethylenediamine solution to functionalize and crosslink the CPVC molecules inside the nanofibers to improve their chelating ability and solvent resistance. The functionalization and crosslinking of CPVC molecules inside composite nanofibers were confirmed by SEM, FT-IR, EA and PALS characterizations. The catalytic performance of these palladium encapsulated CPVC nanofibers (Pd@ACPVC) have been evaluated by the Heck and Sonogashira reactions. The catalysis results demonstrate that this Pd@ACPVC catalyst was very effective and stable to catalyze the coupling reaction of aromatic iodides with alkenes (Heck reaction) or phenyl acetylene (Sonogashira reaction) to afford the coupling products in moderate to excellent yields. Due to the regular fibrous structure, the Pd@ACPVC could be readily separated and recovered from reaction mixture. In addition, the Pd@ACPVC could be separately reused for 10 times for Heck reaction and 8 times for Sonogashira reaction without significant decrement of coupling yields. After careful investigation, the palladium leaching from Pd@ACPVC in the reuse procedure could be ascribed to the loss of chelating groups (amino groups) and expansion of free volume holes in the composite nanofibers. The excellent catalytic activity and stability of Pd@ACPVC could be attributed to the strong chelating ability of amino groups, encapsulation of palladium nanoparticles and ultrafine fiber.

The direct oxidation of alcohols to esters through a green and cost-effective strategy is a fascinating chemical synthesis route. In this study, an environmentally friendly N-doped porous carbon encapsulated Co-based nano-catalyst was prepared via a simple carbonization procedure, utilizing renewable chitosan, accessible dicyandiamide and low-cost Co(OAc)(2) as co-precursors. The obtained Co@NC-2-T catalysts were successfully used in selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols with methanol to esters under atmospheric reaction conditions. The Co@NC-2-900 catalyst (added with 2 g dicyandiamide and pyrolyzed at 900 degrees C) shows optimal activity and applicability and can also be reused at least six times in the oxidative esterification of aromatic alcohols with excellent stability. The presence of superoxide anion radicals in the current catalytic system was detected by the EPR method, and a possible mechanism of alcohol oxidation to ester was proposed on this basis. Thus, this study provides a facile, eco-friendly, and highly efficient catalytic system for oxidative esterification of alcohols.

Aims We sought to examine sex differences in congestion in patients hospitalized for acute heart failure (AHF). Understanding congestive patterns in women and men with AHF may provide insights into sex differences in the presentation and prognosis of AHF patients. Methods and results In a prospective, two-site study in adults hospitalized for AHF, four-zone lung ultrasound (LUS) was performed at the time of echocardiography at baseline (LUS1) and, in a subset, pre-discharge (LUS2). B-lines on LUS and echocardiographic images were analysed offline, blinded to clinical information and outcomes. Among 349 patients with LUS1 data (median age 74, 59% male, and 87% White), women had higher left ventricular ejection fraction (mean 43% vs. 36%, P < 0.001), higher tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (mean 17 vs. 15 mm, P = 0.021), and higher measures of filling pressures (median E/e' 20 vs. 16, P < 0.001). B-line number on LUS1 (median 6 vs. 6, P = 0.69) and admission N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide levels (median 3932 vs. 3483 pg/ml, P = 0.77) were similar in women and men. In 121 patients with both LUS1 and LUS2 data, there was a similar and significant decrease in B-lines from baseline to discharge in both women and men. The risk of the composite 90 day outcome increased with higher B-line number on four-zone LUS2: unadjusted hazard ratio for each B-line tertile was 1.86 (95% confidence interval 1.08-3.20, P = 0.025) in women and 1.65 (95% confidence interval 1.03-2.64, P = 0.037) in men (interaction P = 0.72). Conclusions Among patients with AHF, echocardiographic markers differed between women and men at baseline, whereas B-line number on LUS did not. The dynamic changes in B-lines during a hospitalization for AHF were similar in women and men. Category: esters-buliding-blocks. p-Coumaric acid is a known inhibitor of tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the initial steps of the melanin synthesis in human and other species. However, its low lipophilicity impairs its penetration through skin and efficacy as antimelanogenic agent indeed. Accordingly, this paper reports the assessment of several coumaric acid derivatives as tyrosinase inhibitors and antimelanogenic agents in in vitro, in silico and ex vivo assays. The compounds were designed with modifications in the aromatic and acid moieties of p-coumaric acid, being the coumarate esters the most promising derivatives. The compounds showed higher tyrosinase inhibitory activity (pIC(50), 3.7-4.2) than the parent acid, being compounds 1d, 1e and 1f the most potent inhibitors. Docking analysis showed that these esters are competitive inhibitors per se, and act independently of a redox mechanism as suggested by DPPH assays.
