A series of palladium(H) complexes incorporating l-substituted-3-methyl-3-phospholenes as the P-ligands were prepared from phospholene oxides by deoxygenation followed by complexation with PdCl2(PhCN)(2). The two 1-substituted-3-methyl-3-phospholene ligands were trans position to each other in the Pd(II)-complexes. As the ligands contain a P-stereogenic center, the Pd-complexes were obtained as a 1:1 mixture of two stereoisomers, the homochiral (R,R and S,S) and the meso (R,S) forms, when racemic starting materials were used. An optically active Pd-complex containing (R)-1-propyl-3-phospholene ligand was also prepared. Catalytic activity of an aryl- and an alkyl-3-phospholene-palladium(II)-complex was evaluated in hydroalkoxycarbonylation of styrene. The alkyl-derivative showed higher activity and selectivity towards the formation of the esters of 3-phenylpropionic acid. However, the overall activity of these PdCl2(phospholene)(2)-type complexes was low.

This method features a broad substrate scope and wide functional group tolerance under mild conditions and allows the synthesis of a set of (hetero)arylsilanes with operationally simple manipulations. The application and generality of the approach were further demonstrated by the late-stage functionalization of marketed drugs. The Rh-catalyzed direct carboxylation of alkenyl C-H bonds was achieved by using pyrazole as a removable directing group. In the presence of 5 mol% RhCl3 . 3H(2)O, 6 mol% P(Mes)(3), and 2 equiv. of AlMe2(OMe), the alkenyl C-H bond of various alkenylpyrazoles was directly carboxylated in good yields under CO2 atmosphere. Furthermore, several useful transformations of the pyrazole moiety of the product were achieved to afford synthetically useful carboxylic acid derivatives in good yields.

A generalized, simple and efficient transfer hydrogenation of unsaturated bonds has been developed using HBP in and various proton reagents as hydrogen sources. The substrates, including alkenes, alkynes, aromatic heterocycles, aldehydes, ketones, imines, azo, nitro, epoxy and nitrile compounds, are all applied to this catalytic system. Various groups, which cannot survive under the Pd/C/H-2 combination, are tolerated. The activity of the reactants was studied and the trends are as follows:styrene>diphenylmethanimine>benzaldehyde>azobenzene>nitrobenzene>quinoline>acetophenone>benzonitrile. Substrates bearing two or more different unsaturated bonds were also investigated and transfer hydrogenation occurred with excellent chemoselectivity. Nano-palladium catalystin situgenerated from Pd(OAc)(2) and HBP in extremely improved the TH efficiency. Furthermore, chemoselective anti-Markovnikov hydrodeuteration of terminal aromatic olefins was achieved using D2O and HBP in via in situ HD generation and discrimination.

The aim of this work was to undertake a detailed analysis on chemical constituents of brown propolis, originating from four different states (Bahia, Minas Gerais, Parana and Sergipe) of Brazil. The volatile profile was determined by using HS-SPME-GC-MS along with the determination of total phenolic compounds content, flavonoids and antioxidant activity. A total of 315 volatile compounds were identified, however, several of them have not been reported so far in the Brazilian brown propolis. The terpenes represented the major class with 40.92-84.66% of the total area in the chromatograms. PCA analysis of the majority of compounds successfully indicated the volatile profile of each propolis sample according to their geographical origin. The analysis of volatile compounds and its characterization also varied significantly and confirmed that these depended on the geographical area of collection of propolis. The data generated in this work may help in establishing criteria for quality control and tracking the specific region of propolis production in different states of Brazil.

A novel robust diphosphine-ruthenium(ii) complex has been developed that can efficiently catalyze both the hydrogenation of CO(2)to methanol and itsin situcondensation with carboxylic acids to form methyl esters; a TON of up to 3260 is achievable for the CO(2)to methanol step. Both aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids can be transformed to their corresponding methyl esters with high conversion and selectivity (17 aliphatic and 18 aromatic examples). On the basis of a series of experiments, a mechanism has been proposed to account for the various steps involved in the catalytic pathway. More importantly, this approach provides a promising route for using CO(2)as a C1 source for the production of biofuels, fine chemicals and methanol.

The direct esterification of alcohols with non-noble metal-based catalytic systems faces great challenges. Here, we report a new chrome-based catalyst stabilized by a single pentaerythritol decorated Anderson-type polyoxometalate, [N(C4H9)(4)](3)[CrMo6O18(OH)(3)C{(OCH2)(3)CH2OH}], which can realize the efficient transformation from alcohols to esters by H2O2 oxidation in good yields and high selectivity without extra organic ligands. A variety of alcohols with different functionalities including some natural products and pharmaceutical intermediates are tolerated in this system. The chrome-based catalyst can be recycled several times and still keep the original configuration and catalytic activity. We also propose a reasonable catalytic mechanism and prove the potential for industrial applications.
