Solid acid catalysts are environmentally friendly alternatives to the use of mineral acids in a range of applications, including the esterification of carboxylic acids. Here, a phosphorus- and nitrogen-doped, carbon-modified, fully heterogeneous solid acid catalyst was prepared by pyrolysis of a mixture of melamine and tungstophosphoric acid at 250, 500, and 750 degrees C under a nitrogen atmosphere provided. The structure of the different catalysts was evaluated by surface area measurements, XRD, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and electron microscopies. Pyrolysis at 500 degrees C created complex solid materials with larger surface area and significantly higher acidity, which can be attributed to WO3 formation on a heteroatomic (N,P)-carbon structure. The 500 degrees C-treated heterogeneous catalysts showed remarkably better activity for esterification of palmitic acid and were thus applied in the esterification of a broad range of carboxylic acids with good overall yields. Furthermore, the solid acid catalyst can be easily recovered and recycled up to eight times without significant loss of activity with no leaching of species to the reaction mixture.

An oxidative esterification of aldehydes with alkanols catalyzed by an in situ generated low-valent cobalt system has been developed using an enone as a mild oxidant. Mechanistic studies revealed that it proceeds through a Co(i)-catalyzed hydrogen-transfer route, wherein the -vinyl moiety in the bidentate enone functions as a hydride acceptor. Meanwhile, Co(i)-catalyzed formyl C-H activation occurred as a competing reaction leading to aldehyde dimerization. The occurrence of the usually kinetically disfavored hydride transfer step therein was significantly increased in the presence of an enone reacting as a hydride transfer initiator.

Agarwood, a species of resinous heartwood, is a precious medicinal plant and a type of rare natural spice, which is widely used in medicine, cosmetics, religious activities, and other fields. In this study, agarwood samples from eight different regions across four countries were analyzed by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. A total of 232 species were identified (the match factors of these compounds were above 750). The main compounds of agarwood are oxygenated sesquiterpenes and chromones. The compositions of India1 and Malaysia2 were significantly different from those of other samples, which might be attributed to the different production processes of agarwood. For further investigation, factor analysis was conducted for six agarwood samples. The results showed that the data classification possessed a regional characteristic; according to the retention time and relative content, characteristic compositions were determined by factor scores. Finally, the differences of characteristic compositions were simply analyzed, and the reasons were speculated.

Hydroxy- and alkoxycarbonylation reactions constitute important industrial processes in homogeneous catalysis. Nowadays, palladium complexes constitute state-of-the-art catalysts for these transformations. Herein, we report the first efficient platinum-catalysed alkoxycarbonylations of olefins including sterically hindered and functionalized ones. This atom-efficient catalytic transformation provides straightforward access to a variety of valuable esters in good to excellent yields and often with high selectivities. In kinetic experiments the activities of Pd- and Pt-based catalysts were compared. Even at low catalyst loading, Pt shows high catalytic activity.

Established electrodecarboxylative etherification protocols are based on Hofer-Moest-type reaction pathways. An oxidative decarboxylation gives rise to radicals, which are further oxidised to carbocations. This is possible only for benzylic or otherwise stabilised substrates. Here, we report the electrodecarboxylative radical-radical coupling of lithium alkylcarboxylates with 1-hydroxybenzotriazole at platinum electrodes in methanol/pyridine to afford alkyl benzotriazole ethers. The substrate scope of this electrochemical radical coupling extends to primary and secondary alkylcarboxylates. The benzotriazole products easily undergo reductive cleavage to the alcohols. They can also serve as synthetic hubs to access a wide variety of functional groups. This reaction prototype demonstrates that electrodecarboxylative C-O bond formation can be taken beyond the intrinsic substrate limitations of Hofer-Moest mechanisms.

A methylation reagent for compounds bearing N-H, O-H, and S-H functionalities was developed. Methyl trifluoroacetate (MTFA) was commonly considered as trifluoroacetylating reagent or trifluoromethylating reagent. In this work, we report the methylation behavior of MTFA under mild conditions with good functional group tolerance, allowing the transformation of a wide range of substrates, including N,H-heteroaromatic compounds, phenolic compounds, carboxylic acids, thiophenols, secondary amides and imides, in high yields. This method was preliminarily applied to the chemoselective methylation of bifunctionalized secondary amide.
