A novel robust diphosphine-ruthenium(ii) complex has been developed that can efficiently catalyze both the hydrogenation of CO(2)to methanol and itsin situcondensation with carboxylic acids to form methyl esters; a TON of up to 3260 is achievable for the CO(2)to methanol step. Both aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids can be transformed to their corresponding methyl esters with high conversion and selectivity (17 aliphatic and 18 aromatic examples). On the basis of a series of experiments, a mechanism has been proposed to account for the various steps involved in the catalytic pathway. More importantly, this approach provides a promising route for using CO(2)as a C1 source for the production of biofuels, fine chemicals and methanol.

This reaction provides a convenient synthetic route for the preparation of a large variety of functionalized fullerene derivatives with tailored properties, e.g. water-soluble compounds demonstrating promising antiviral activities against HCMV, HSV1, HIV and several influenza virus strains.

Temnadenia odorifera is an endemic species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. This study was developed in order to identify the volatile compounds emitted by the living flowers and nectar, to evaluate the temporal pattern of scent emission, and the sugars composition of its nectar. Analyses of the flower scent by dynamic headspace in vivo, of nectar sugar composition and studies on floral biology were performed. Twenty-three volatile compounds were identified in the flowers scent. The total amount of odor emitted by flowers varied significantly throughout anthesis, ranging from 10232.7 ng g(-1) (9 to 12 h) to 620.2 ng g(-1) (15 to 18 h). 2-Phenylethanol and (E)-cinnamyl alcohol were the major compounds. Concentration ratio between disaccharides and the sum of hexoses ranged from 2.3 to 3.04, which can be correlated to the physiological needs inherent to big bees, the most frequent insects in T. odorifera. Analysis of the chemical composition of T. odorifera flowers provided a broader understanding of the mechanisms responsible for plant-insect interactions.

We report a bifunctional Ag catalyst promoted intramolecular capture of oxonium ylides with alkynes for the enantioselective synthesis of 2,5-dihydrofurans. This represents unprecedented synergistic catalysis of a bifunctional Ag catalyst. Mechanistic studies revealed that [(R)-3,5-DM-BINAP](AgSbF6)(2) (9) is likely to be the active catalytic species and that the reaction involves second order kinetics with respect to 9, suggesting that two molecules of 9 are involved in the intramolecular trapping of a Ag-associated oxonium ylide with a Ag-activated alkyne. Based on our mechanistic hypothesis, we further optimized the reaction, rendering a facile approach to 2,5-dihydrofurans in good to excellent yields in a highly chemo- and enantioselective fashion.

The oxidative esterification of various aldehydes with alcohols could be achieved by a heterogeneous iron(iii) catalyst supported on a ring-like POM inorganic ligand under mild conditions, affording the corresponding esters, including several drug molecules and natural products, in high yields. ESI-MS and control experiments demonstrated that POM-Fe-V(O) was the active catalytic species and the plausible mechanism was presented. More importantly, the 6th run of the iron catalyst recycles shows only a slight decrease in the yield.

The Rh-catalyzed direct carboxylation of alkenyl C-H bonds was achieved by using pyrazole as a removable directing group.
