Hydrogenation of a carbon-carbon double bond was favored over other polar pi-bond systems, while labile functional groups such as benzyl ether, benzyl esters, cyano, nitro and halogen remained unaffected. Primary amines were converted to N,N-dimethyl amines with formaldehyde, the double bond of coumarin was selectively hydrogenated without opening of the lactone functionality.

Temnadenia odorifera is an endemic species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. This study was developed in order to identify the volatile compounds emitted by the living flowers and nectar, to evaluate the temporal pattern of scent emission, and the sugars composition of its nectar. Analyses of the flower scent by dynamic headspace in vivo, of nectar sugar composition and studies on floral biology were performed. Twenty-three volatile compounds were identified in the flowers scent. The total amount of odor emitted by flowers varied significantly throughout anthesis, ranging from 10232.7 ng g(-1) (9 to 12 h) to 620.2 ng g(-1) (15 to 18 h). 2-Phenylethanol and (E)-cinnamyl alcohol were the major compounds. Concentration ratio between disaccharides and the sum of hexoses ranged from 2.3 to 3.04, which can be correlated to the physiological needs inherent to big bees, the most frequent insects in T. odorifera. Analysis of the chemical composition of T. odorifera flowers provided a broader understanding of the mechanisms responsible for plant-insect interactions.

The selective reduction of esters to aldehydes,viathe formation of stable alkyl silyl acetals, was, for the first time, achieved with both manganese, -Mn-2(CO)(10)- and rhenium -Re-2(CO)(10)- catalysts in the presence of triethylsilane as reductant. These two methods provide a direct access to a large variety of aliphatic and aromatic alkyl silyl acetals (30 examples) and to the corresponding aldehydes (13 examples) upon hydrolysis. The reactions proceeded in excellent yields and high selectivity at room temperature under photo-irradiation conditions (LED, 365 nm, 40 W, 9 h).

A cyclopropanation/intramolecular rearrangement initiated by the Michael addition of in situ generated ortho-quinone methides (o-QMs) has been developed for the enantioselective synthesis of 2-aryl-2,3-dihydrobenzofurans containing two consecutive stereogenic centers, including a quaternary carbon atom. We report high-performance I+/H(2)O(2)catalysis for the oxidative or decarboxylative oxidative alpha-azidation of carbonyl compounds by using sodium azide under biphasic neutral phase-transfer conditions. To induce higher reactivity especially for the alpha-azidation of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, we designed a structurally compact isoindoline-derived quaternary ammonium iodide catalyst bearing electron-withdrawing groups. The nonproductive decomposition pathways of I+/H(2)O(2)catalysis could be suppressed by the use of a catalytic amount of a radical-trapping agent. This oxidative coupling tolerates a variety of functional groups and could be readily applied to the late-stage alpha-azidation of structurally diverse complex molecules. Moreover, we achieved the enantioselective alpha-azidation of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds as the first successful example of enantioselective intermolecular oxidative coupling with a chiral hypoiodite catalyst.

Established electrodecarboxylative etherification protocols are based on Hofer-Moest-type reaction pathways. An oxidative decarboxylation gives rise to radicals, which are further oxidised to carbocations. This is possible only for benzylic or otherwise stabilised substrates. Here, we report the electrodecarboxylative radical-radical coupling of lithium alkylcarboxylates with 1-hydroxybenzotriazole at platinum electrodes in methanol/pyridine to afford alkyl benzotriazole ethers. The substrate scope of this electrochemical radical coupling extends to primary and secondary alkylcarboxylates. The benzotriazole products easily undergo reductive cleavage to the alcohols. They can also serve as synthetic hubs to access a wide variety of functional groups. This reaction prototype demonstrates that electrodecarboxylative C-O bond formation can be taken beyond the intrinsic substrate limitations of Hofer-Moest mechanisms.
