A visible light mediated oxidative lactonization of 2-methyl-1,1′-biaryls was developed, giving benzocoumarins in good yields. The reaction features multiple C-H functionalization processes with oxygen as the final oxidant. Useful alpha-boryl esters can be synthesized in one step from alpha,beta-unsaturated esters using just a simple to access NHC-BH3 (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) and catalytic I-2. The scope of this reductive alpha-borylation methodology is excellent and includes a range of alkyl, aryl substituted and cyclic and acyclic alpha,beta-unsaturated esters. Mechanistic studies involving reductive borylation of a cyclic alpha,beta-unsaturated ester with NHC-BD3/I-2 indicated that concerted hydroboration of the alkene moiety in the alpha,beta-unsaturated ester proceeds instead of a stepwise process involving initial 1,4-hydroboration; this is in contrast to the recently reported reductive alpha-silylation. The BH2(NHC) unit can be transformed into electrophilic BX2(NHC) moieties (X = halide) and the ester moiety can be reduced to the alcohol with the borane unit remaining intact to form b-boryl alcohols. The use of a chiral auxiliary, 8-phenylmenthyl ester, also enables effective stereo-control of the newly formed C-B bond. Combined two step ester reduction/borane oxidation forms diols, including excellent e. e. (97%) for the formation of S-3-phenylpropane-1,2-diol. This work represents a simple transition metal free route to form bench stable alpha-boryl esters from inexpensive starting materials.

We report a robust and rigid etb-type metal-organic framework, in which its pore surface is decorated with flexible ethoxyl groups. It shows unprecedentedly selective adsorption of acetone (E-N(T) value of 0.355, kinetic diameter of 4.6 angstrom) over methanol (E-N(T) value of 0.762, kinetic diameter of 3.6 angstrom) for their azeotropic mixture.

Herein we report the photo- and electrochemical characterization of pyrimidopteridine N-oxide-based heterocycles. The potential of their application as organic photoredox catalysts is showcased in the photomediated contra-thermodynamic E -> Z isomerization of cinnamic acid derivatives and oxidative cyclization of 2-phenyl benzoic acid to benzocoumarin using molecular oxygen as a mild oxidant. Furthermore, unprecedented intermolecular non-covalent n-pi-hole interactions in solid state are discussed based on crystallographic and theoretical data.

The first catalyst for the alkoxycarbonylation of gem-difluoroalkenes is described. This novel catalytic transformation proceeds in the presence of Pd(acac)(2)/1,2-bis((di-tert-butylphosphan-yl)methyl)benzene (btbpx) (L4) and allows for an efficient and straightforward access to a range of difluoromethylated esters in high yields and regioselectivities. The synthetic utility of the protocol is showcased in the practical synthesis of a Cyclandelate analogue using this methodology as the key step.

The aminohydroxylation of various alkenes using FmocNHCl as a nitrogen source is reported. In general, in the absence of a ligand, the reaction provided racemic Fmoc-protected amino alcohols with excellent regioselectivity but in low to moderate yields. However, in some instances, the yield of an amino alcohol product and the regioselectivity could be altered by the addition of a catalytic amount of triethylamine (TEA). The Sharpless asymmetric variant of this reaction (Sharpless asymmetric aminohydroxylation (SAAH)), using (DHQD)(2)PHAL (DHQD) or (DHQ)(2)PHAL (DHQ) as chiral ligands, proceeded more readily and in higher yield compared to the same reaction in the absence of a chiral ligand. The enantiomeric ratios (er) of all but two examples exceeded 90:10 with many examples giving er values of 95:5 or higher, making FmocNHCl a highly practical reagent for preparing chiral amino alcohols. The SAAH reaction using FmocNHCl was used for the preparation of D-threo-beta-hydroxyasparagine and D-threo-beta-methoxyaspartate, suitably protected for Fmoc solid phase peptide synthesis.

A new triazole-functionalized tetracarboxylic acid ligand (H4L) has been synthesized and utilized for the fabrication of a 3D Zn-II organic framework with a Zn-4(-COO)(6) cluster as the secondary building unit. The framework exhibits very good thermal stability and consists of dual functionalities of exposed Lewis acidic metal sites and accessible nitrogen-donor Lewis basic sites. The Lewis basic nitrogen sites in the framework serve as CO2 binding sites for highly selective CO2 capture and the presence of exposed Lewis acidic metal sites in the framework make it an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the chemical fixation of CO2 into value-added cyclic carbonates under ambient conditions.

The reactivity of ortho-functionalized N-heterocycle-substituted iodoarenes (NHIAs) as organocatalysts in iodine(I/III)-mediated oxidations was systematically investigated in the alpha-tosyloxylation of ketones as the model reaction. During a systematic catalyst evolution, it was found that NH-triazoles and benzoxazoles have the most significant positive influence on the reactivity of the central iodine atom. A further catalyst improvement which focused on the substitution pattern of the arene revealed a remarkable ortho-effect. By introduction of an o-OMe group we were able to generate a novel NHIA with a so far unseen catalytic efficiency. This new catalyst is not only easy to synthesize but also enabled the alpha-tosyloxylation of carbonyl compounds at the lowest reported catalyst loading of only 1 mol%. Finally, the performance of this iodine(I) catalyst was successfully demonstrated in intramolecular oxidative couplings of biphenyls and oxidative rearrangements.

Comprehension in hemicellulose pyrolysis is critical to generate renewable fuel and valuable chemical. Herein, a self-designed tubular reactor was applied to observe the appearance alteration and chemical structure evolution during the whole xylan pyrolysis process. Before 200 degrees C, it was free moisture removal stage without significant chemical structure alteration. Xylan began to depolymerize at 200 degrees C corresponding with the appearance change from its original state to dark brown, cleavage of branched-chain and primary product acids & ketones generation. The main chain of xylan was completely broken at 250-350 degrees C via beta-1,4-glycosidic bond cleavage, dehydration, decarboxylation, and decarbonylation reaction. Acids were mainly originated from hemicellulose pyrolysis. The typical signals from FTIR,C-13 CP/MAS NMR were disappeared at 350 degrees C. In the carbonation stage, the C/H and C/O ratio reached 2.01 and 4.54, leading to the aromaticity enhancement of char and formation of carbon-centered radicals.

By using the reduced Schiff base tricarboxylate ligand H(3)cip, one novel 3D Cd-based coordination polymer (Cd-CP) with the formula [Cd(Hcip)(bpea)(0.5)(H2O)](n) (H(3)cip = 5-(3-carboxybenzylamino)isophthalic acid, bpea = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) has been solvothermally synthesized. The prepared Cd-CP possesses a 4-connected CdSO4 net based on dinuclear {Cd-2} units. Luminescence measurements revealed that the complex exhibited ratiometric turn-on luminescence responses toward Al3+ and Cr3+ with a significant color change, which could be easily distinguished by the naked eye under ultraviolet light. Cd-CP can also respond to Fe3+ through a turn-off mechanism. Interestingly, the luminescence quenched by Fe3+@Cd-CP can be recovered and increased significantly by adding some competitive Al3+, while Cr3+ can only marginally increase the luminescence intensity of Fe3+@Cd-CP. Moreover, the detection of the three aforementioned metal ions can be realized by using Cd-CP-coated test papers, extending the potential application regions of the reported material to point-of-care tests and environmental field studies.
