Objectives: The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in infective endocarditis (IE), its risk factors and consequences on patient and renal survival remain debated. Methods: Patients hospitalized for a first episode of IE (possible or definite according to modified Duke criteria) between 2013 and 2016 were included. The primary endpoint was to determine risk factors for early AKI (E-AKI) during the first week of management of IE. Results: A total of 276 patients were included: 220 (79.7%) had definite IE and 56 (20.3%) had possible IE. E-AKI occurred in 150 patients (53%). IE due to Staphylococcus aureus (OR 3.41; 95% CI 1.83-6.39; p < 0.01), history of diabetes (OR 2.34; 95% CI 1.25-4.37; p < 0.01), peripheral arterial disease (OR 2.59; 95% CI 1.07-6.23; p < 0.05), immunological manifestations (OR 3.11; 95% CI 1.31-7.39; p = 0.01), and use of norepinephrine (OR 3.44; 95% CI 1.72-7.02; p < 0.01) were associated with E-AKI. In subgroup analysis, infectious disease consultation was associated with a lower risk of AKI at day 7 (OR 0.41; 95% CI 0.16-0.88; p = 0.04). E-AKI was associated with 1-year mortality (OR 1.65; 95% CI 1.03-2.64; p = 0.04) and chronic kidney disease progression (OR 2.23; 95% CI 1.30-3.82; p < 0.01). Conclusions: E-AKI is common in IE and often associated with non-modifiable variables. Multidisciplinary management should be mandatory, and awareness of AKI diagnosis and etiological explorations should be raised. (C) 2020 The Authors. The reactivity of ortho-functionalized N-heterocycle-substituted iodoarenes (NHIAs) as organocatalysts in iodine(I/III)-mediated oxidations was systematically investigated in the alpha-tosyloxylation of ketones as the model reaction. During a systematic catalyst evolution, it was found that NH-triazoles and benzoxazoles have the most significant positive influence on the reactivity of the central iodine atom. A further catalyst improvement which focused on the substitution pattern of the arene revealed a remarkable ortho-effect. By introduction of an o-OMe group we were able to generate a novel NHIA with a so far unseen catalytic efficiency. This new catalyst is not only easy to synthesize but also enabled the alpha-tosyloxylation of carbonyl compounds at the lowest reported catalyst loading of only 1 mol%. Finally, the performance of this iodine(I) catalyst was successfully demonstrated in intramolecular oxidative couplings of biphenyls and oxidative rearrangements.

Photoredox chemistry has greatly stimulated the application of radical based transformations in medicinal chemistry and early drug discovery in recent years. Carboxylate groups have been identified as traceless leaving groups that can be converted into radical intermediates capable of undergoing 1,4-conjugate addition reactions to Michael acceptors. Herein, we show the successful C-terminal derivatization of small peptide substrates by using this methodology in a parallel synthesis setting. A targeted synthesis of dodecasubstituted type I porphyrins that utilizes the reaction of unsymmetrical 3,4-difunctionalized pyrroles and sterically demanding aldehydes was developed. This way, type I porphyrins could be obtained as the only type isomers, likely due to a minimization of the steric strain arising from peri-interactions. Uniquely, this method does not depend on lengthy precursor syntheses, the separation of isomers, or impractical limitations of the scale. In addition, single-crystal X-ray analysis was used to elucidate the structural features of the macrocycles.

Catalytic conversion of lignin to versatile aromatic compounds is attracting increasing attention. However, it is highly desirable but challenging to produce a specific chemical with high yield through lignin depolymerization in a one-pot process because of the complex structure of the lignin molecule (mainly composed of H, G, and S units). In this study, a series of metal-based deep eutectic solvents (M-DESs) were prepared and used for the catalytic tailoring of lignin H units to produce value-added methyl p-hydroxycinnamate (MPC). In particular, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) showed excellent catalytic performance for the selective production of MPC as the sole product with high yield and selectivity (105.8 mg g(-1) and 74.1%, respectively). Extensive characterizations using 2D HSQC NMR, C-13 NMR, and GPC demonstrated that MPC was obtained from the selective tailoring of p-coumaric acid (pCA) units via the cleavage of ester bonds in lignin. Furthermore, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) also exhibited efficiency to other herbaceous lignins, and showed excellent recyclability. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy for the valorization of lignin.

Hydroxy- and alkoxycarbonylation reactions constitute important industrial processes in homogeneous catalysis. Nowadays, palladium complexes constitute state-of-the-art catalysts for these transformations. Herein, we report the first efficient platinum-catalysed alkoxycarbonylations of olefins including sterically hindered and functionalized ones. This atom-efficient catalytic transformation provides straightforward access to a variety of valuable esters in good to excellent yields and often with high selectivities. In kinetic experiments the activities of Pd- and Pt-based catalysts were compared. Even at low catalyst loading, Pt shows high catalytic activity.
