Of 67 N-substituted derivatives of 5-nitronicotinamide, 21 showed excellent coccidiostatic effects, with optimal activity associated with the N-lower alkyl, alkanoyl, alkenoyl, and aromatic acyl derivatives 5-Nitronicotinamide was prepared from 5-bromonicotinoyl chloride by treatment with NH3 followed by oxidation with fuming H2SO4 and 30% H2O2, while the amide N-substituted derivatives were prepared by conventional means.
