Macroporous acrylonitrile-dimethacrylate copolymer beads were prepared by suspension polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), bisphenol A dimethacrylate (BADMA), butanediol dimethacrylate (BDDMA) or neopentyl glycol dimethacrylate (NGDMA) using AIBN as an initiator and starch as a suspending agent in water at 70° under nitrogen. The copolymer beads were characterized using FTIR, TGA and determining apparent d. and swelling degree. The solvent effect on the surface area of AN-EGDMA copolymer was also investigated. The formation of macroporous structure due to incorporation of diluents was confirmed by increased swelling, BET surface area and surface morphol.
