Background.Cryptosporidium is a major cause of diarrheal disease worldwide, including chronic disease in malnourished children and patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. There are increasing reports of cryptosporidiosis in transplant patients, especially from middle-income countries. Methods. The literature on treatment of cryptosporidiosis in transplant patients was reviewed and included no controlled trials but only small case series. Nitazoxanide, azithromycin, spiramycin, and combination therapies have been used, but none are consistently efficacious. Results. We present a case of chronic diarrhea from cryptosporidiosis in a renal transplant patient. His illness resolved with decreasing immunosuppression and treatment with the 3-drug combination of nitazoxanide, azithromycin, and rifaximin. Conclusions. Although current therapies are not reliably effective in the absence of an effective cellular immune response, combination therapies hold promise for improved responses.

Cryptosporidium parvum causes intestinal parasitic infections affcting both immunosuppressed and immuno competent individuals. Given the absence of effctive treatments for cryptosporidiosis, especially in immunodeficient patients, the present study was designed to assess the therapeutic efficy of secnidazole (SEC) and its combination with nitazoxanide (NTZ) in comparison to single NTZ treatment in relation to the immune status of a murine model of C. parvum infection. The infected groups were administered NTZ, SEC or NTZ-SEC for three or five successive doses. At days 10 and 12 post-infection (p.i.), the mice were sacrified, and the efficy of the applied drugs was evaluated by comparing the histo pathol. alterations in ileum and measuring the T helper Th1 (interferon gamma; IFN-γ), Th2 [interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-10] and Th17 (IL-17) cytokine profies in serum. The NTZ-SEC combination recorded the maximal reduction of C. parvum oocyst shedding, endogenous stages count and intestinal histopathol., regardless of the immune status of the infected mice. The efficy of NTZ-SEC was dependent on the period of administration, as the 5 day-based treatment protocol was also more effctive than the 3 day-based one in terms of immunocompetence and immunosuppression. The present treatment schedule induced an immunomodulatory effect from SEC that developed a protective immune response against C. parvum infection with reduced production of serum IL-17, IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10. Application of NTZ-SEC combined therapy may be useful in treatment of C. parvum, especially in cases involving immunosuppression.

A novel synthetic strategy gives reversible crosslinked polymeric materials with tunable fluorescence properties. Dimaleimide-substituted tetraphenylethene (TPE-2MI), which is non-emissive owing to the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) between maleimide (MI) and tetraphenylethene (TPE) groups, was used to crosslink random copolymers of Me (MM), decyl (DM) or lauryl (LM) methacrylate with furfuryl methacrylate (FM). The mixture of copolymer and TPE-2MI in DMF showed reversible fluorescence with “”on/off”” behavior depending on the Diels-Alder (DA)/retro-DA process, which is easily adjusted by temperature At high temperatures, the retro-DA reaction is dominant, and the fluorescence is quenched by the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. In contrast, at low temperatures, the emission recovers as the DA reaction takes over. A transparent PMFM/TPE-2MI polymer film was prepared which shows an accurate response to the external temperature and exhibited tunable fluorescent “”turn on/off”” behavior. These results suggest the possible application in areas including information security and transmission. An example of invisible/visible writing is given.

Polymer networks cross-linked by reversible metal-ligand interactions possess versatile mech. properties achieved simply by varying the metal species and quantity. Although prior experiments have revealed the dependence of the network’s viscoelastic behavior on the dynamics of metal-ligand interaction, a theor. framework with quant. relations that would enable efficient material design, is still lacking. One major challenge is isolating the effect of metal-ligand interaction from other factors in the polymer matrix. To address this challenge, we designed a linear precursor free from solvents, chain entanglements and polymer-metal phase separation to ensure that relaxation of the network is mainly governed by the dissociation and association of the metal-ligand cross-links. The rheol. behavior of the networks was thoroughly characterized regarding the changes in cross-link d., binding stoichiometry and coordination stability, allowing quant. comparison between exptl. results and the sticky Rouse model. Through this process, we noticed that the presence of reversible cross-links increases the network modulus at high frequency compared to the linear polymer, and that the effective metal-ligand dissociation time increases dramatically with increasing the cross-link d. Informed by these findings, we modified the expression of the sticky Rouse model. For the polymer in which the metal center and ligands bond in a paired association, the relaxation follows our enhanced sticky Rouse model. For the polymer in which each reversible cross-link consists of multiple metal centers and ligands, the relaxation timescale is significantly extended due to greater restriction on the polymer chains. This systematic study bridges experiments and theory, providing deeper understanding of the mech. properties of metallopolymers and facilitating material design.

Vapor pressures of linear alkyl glycolates HO-CH2-COO-(CH2)n-H with n = 1-8 were determined by the transpiration method. Standard molar enthalpies of vaporization at exptl. temperature and at 298.15 K were derived from the temperature dependence of the vapor pressure. The critical temperatures and pressures of alkyl glycolates were measured by the pulse-heating method. The exptl. data were successfully checked for internal consistency. Molar heat capacity of atm. pressure for liquid esters was measured by the method of differential scanning calorimetry in the temperature range 303-423 K. The molar liquid heat capacities at 298.15 K and atm. pressure of alkyl glycolates were calculated from the result of this work. The measured values were used for estimating prediction capabilities of group-contribution methods by Constantinou and Gani, Marrero and Gani, and Hukkerikar et al. for critical properties and Chickos and Acree, Domalski and Hearing, and Ceriani et al. for heat capacity at 298.15 K. Results of this study could be used for the design and optimization of the chem. processes of the utilization of renewable feedstock.

In this study the continuous production of fatty acid Me esters (FAME) and triacetin from crambe oil and Me acetate (MA), without the use of catalysts, was investigated. The effects of the oil to MA mass ratio, reaction temperature, addition of water (in the oil) and a two-step reaction on the formation of the products were determined The results indicated that increasing the availability of MA in the reaction medium had little influence on the FAME yield. An increase in the temperature enhanced the formation of esters and triacetin in the initial minutes of the reaction; however, as the reaction proceeded thermal decomposition was observed, mainly at 350°C. The sample composition revealed a high level of decomposition of linoleate and linolenate esters. A higher FAME yield was obtained with 10 wt% of water added to the oil (�3%), as well as with the application of a two-step reaction (�8%).

A new mix-mode cellulose-based sorptive phase is described that combines two different polymeric domains (i.e., nylon and polystyrene), thus providing simultaneous hydrophilic and hydrophobic features as a result. By analogy with Janus materials, the new paper-based sorptive phase has been named paper-based polystyrene/nylon Janus-platform (P-Ps/Ny-JP). The main advantages of the proposed P-Ps/Ny-JP are the sustainability, simplicity in synthesis, and low cost of this extraction device. The main parameters affecting the synthesis (i.e., coating procedure and polymers proportion) have been studied, and the resulting material has been characterized via SEM and IR spectroscopy. As a proof-of-concept, the simultaneous extraction of fourteen UV filters of a wide range of polarity, with log P values ranging from – 0.234 to 16.129, from water samples and their determination by liquid chromatog.-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has been performed. The proposed methodol. enables the determination of these chems. with limits of detection from 12 to 71 ng L-1, and the precision, expressed as a relative standard deviation, was below 15%. The extraction device was applied to the anal. of real water samples likely to contain UV filters (i.e., two private swimming pool water and one seawater) and the recovery values were in the range 73-121%.

Two-dimensional self-assembly of microplatelets inside the water phase with a large patterned area is achieved. Stable three-dimensional multi-layered self-assembled structures are quickly formed at the air-water interface. These demonstrations aim to open distinctive and effective ways for new two-dimensional surface coating technol. with autonomous organization strategy, and three-dimensional complex hierarchical architectures built by the bottom-up method and commonly found in nature (such as nacre, bone or enamel, etc.).
