Polydopamine (PDA) composited LAPONITE cross-linked hydrophobically associated (PLHA) hydrogels were facilely constructed by in situ polymerization The PLHA hydrogel exerted improved mech. properties and excellent stability with an addnl. crosslinking agent LAPONITE, which guaranteed the hydrogel could be utilized for long-time and reusable application. Notably, the self-healing property of PLHA gels could be achieved easily by the hereinafter three factors: hydrophobic association, LAPONITE and PDA. Compared with the pristine hydrophobic associated (HA) gel, excellent dye adsorption capacity toward both anionic and cationic dyes came out in PLHA gels owing to the neg. charges on LAPONITE and abundant functional groups on PDA nanoparticles such as amine groups, catechol groups and aromatic moieties. The PLHA gels could bind organic dyes via various ways, including coordination, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding or π-π stacking interaction. Compared with the reported works, our proposed method provided the opportunity to prepare a novel robust, self-healing phys. dual cross-linked hydrogels, which have the potential to be applied in tissue engineering and the reusable adsorbents of organic colorants.

In this research combined effect of hydrophobicity and reactive epoxide group on the adsorption behavior of dye mols. by composite polymer particles was investigated. Lauryl methacrylate (LMA) a poor water soluble long chain vinyl monomer is com. available. Polystyrene/poly(LMA-divinyl benzene) or PS/P(LMA-DVB) composite seed particles were first prepared by slightly modified activated swelling of micron-sized PS seed particles utilizing either water or water-ethanol dispersion medium. The influence of poly(vinyl alc.) (PVA) as steric stabilizer on the size and size distribution was evaluated. The poor solubility of LMA in the continuous phase hindered the homogeneous swelling of PS particles even in the presence of ethanol (5% weight/weight) and resulted in fairly polydispersed PS/P(LMA-DVB) composite seed particles. The composite seed particles were then functionalized with epoxide group by seeded polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to produce PS/P(LMA-DVB)/PGMA composite polymer particles. The epoxide functionalized PS/P(LMA-DVB)/PGMA composite polymer particles were used to adsorb two kinds of azo dyes, congo red (CR) and direct red-75 (DR-75). The effects of initial dye concentration at 303 and 323 K on adsorption behavior were investigated and the adsorption was explained by adsorption isotherms. Temperature dependent adsorption measurements were also carried out at identical initial dye concentration The adsorption results showed that inclusion of reactive epoxide group on/near the surface of hydrophobic PS/P(LMA-DVB) composite seed particles improved the adsorption capacity of dye mols.

A metal organic framework material MIL-101 was developed as an effective solid-phase extraction adsorbent for the extraction of eleven UV filters compounds The MIL-101 adsorbent was packed into a polypropylene cartridge and connected at the outlet tip with the Visiprep vacuum manifolds allowing process up to 12-port SPE samples, simultaneously. The extracted UV filters were quantified by gas chromatog.-tandem mass spectrometry. Several parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the target analytes, i.e. desorption conditions, sample pH, the addition of salt and sample volume were optimized by ANOVA anal. followed by a multifactorial design. The sample breakthrough volume of the developed method was also evaluated. The SPE-GC-MS/MS method was validated in terms of linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9973), accuracy (with satisfactory recovery from 82% to 105%), precision (relative standard deviation of less than 10%) and limits of detection ranging from 1.0 to 11.7 ng L-1. The validated method was successfully applied for the extraction and quantification of the target UV filters in different types of water samples, including lake, river, seawater and swimming pool waters. The most often found UV filters were octocrylene, 4-methylbencylidene camphor and homosalate that also came out with the highest concentrations, up to 4000 ng L-1, particularly in swimming pool waters.

Fabricating antibacterial hydrogels with antimicrobial drugs and synthetic biocompatible biomimetic hydrogels is a promising strategy for practical medical applications. Here, we report a bicomponent hydrogel composed of a biomimetic polyisocyanopetide (PIC) hydrogel and a photodynamic antibacterial membrane-intercalating conjugated oligoelectrolyte (COE). The aggregation behavior and aggregate size of the COEs in water can be regulated using the PIC hydrogel, which could induce COEs with higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) production efficiency and increased association of COEs toward bacteria, therefore enhancing the antibacterial efficiency. This strategy provides a facile method for developing biomimetic hydrogels with high antibacterial capability.

Ecstasy is a type of narcotic tablet and is very popularly used as a stimulant. The main content is Methylene dioxymetamphetamine (MDMA) and Methamphetamine (MA), but because a large amount of demand is not balanced with sufficient supply, ecstasy tablets are often adulterated with various contents, such as Paracetamol (PCT), Caffeine (KFN) and Ephedrine (EFD). Ecstasy tablets are often combined with other active compounds so that they can cause problems in determining the levels of tablets carried out in the Police Forensic Lab, so a cheaper, effective, and fast method is needed in determining the levels of these tablets. The research was conducted exptl. with the spectrophotometric method, namely the dual-wavelength method, then the validation was tested based on the validation parameters, namely linearity, accuracy, precision, LOD and LOQ. Then, this method was applied to determine levels of MA, EFD, KFN and PCT in tablet preparations The results showed that the application of the dual-wavelength method for the assay was carried out at λ 250.6 nm and 263 nm for KFN, at λ 263 nm and 281.8 nm for MA, at λ 259.4 nm and 255 nm for PCT at λ 255 nm and 236 nm for EFD, resp. with a level result of 40.05; 1.63; 38.11; 20.21 for MA, EFD, KFN and PCT resp., and with good precision and accuracy. The dual-wavelength UV spectrophotometric method was successfully applied to determine the levels of MA, EFD, KFN and PCT mixtures in tablets.

The application of nanotechnol. in the oil and gas industry has attracted widespread attention in recent years. This study aims to develop a nanoemulsion (NE) for use in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The NE stabilized by anion amphiphilic copolymer, nonionic surfactant (Brij30) and modified LAPONITE RD was prepared by the phase inversion composition (PIC) method. The appearance of the emulsion is translucent and the average particle size is less than 60 nm. The micromorphol. and interfacial tension (IFT) are examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and a spinning drop IFT meter, resp. The NE possesses good stability evaluated by conductivity and particle size tests. The absolute value of the zeta potential of NE increases when modified LAPONITE RD is added. In a core flooding experiment with an artificial sandstone core, the NE flooding increased oil recovery by 23.53% compared to water flooding.

Poly(dodecyl methacrylate-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) gels were prepared with and without a pore former (PEG) in ethanol at 70°C by free radical crosslinking polymerization method. These gels were used to sep. limonene + linalool mixtures with different fractions. The selectivity values were higher than 1 for each gel synthesized with PEG and without PEG. In equilibrium, selectivity values of gels synthesized without PEG in 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30 limonene + linalool binary mixtures were calculated as 1.1, 1.9, and 2.1, resp. The corresponding gels synthesized using PEG have selectivity values as 1.3, 1.9, and 2.2. Despite slightly effect of pore former on selectivity, it has a relatively significant effect in time regions before arriving equilibrium, giving the idea of selecting optimum time region to sep. binary mixtures Solubility parameter of the gel was predicted by group contribution methods to determine the relationship between selectivity and solubility parameter difference of binary combinations of limonene, linalool and gel. Solubility parameter difference calculated from Hoy method showed that the value of each solubility parameter contribution for gel-linalool binary was the lowest with the values of 0.02, 1.7, and 4.8 for disperse, polar and H-bonding contributions, resp. verifying the selectivity of the gels for linalool. The gel synthesized using PEG shows a swelling value change for temperatures higher than 40°C in the direction of decreasing but the gel synthesized without PEG has approx. constant equilibrium swelling value (ESV). This result indicates that the use of a pore former may be an important parameter in the recovery process of the extracted components after the separation procedure.

The aim of the study was to produce a Polyvinyl chloride-based membrane containing a polymer imprinted with a valproic acid mol. which was directly coated on a graphite electrode to determine the amount of valproic acid in aqueous samples. With the dispersion of molecularly imprinted polymer particles in dioctyl phthalate plasticizer as a solvent mediator, this potentiometric sensor was designed and after that it was embedded in a polyvinyl chloride matrix. The designed electrode showed a near-Nernstian slope of 54.1 ± 1 mV decade-1 in the concentration range of 10-6-10-2 M and a detection limit of 10-6 M with a response time of about 40 s for valproic acid and can be used for 2 mo without divergence changing the potential. The fabricated electrode, in the pH range among 3.5-8.5, indicates the good sensitivity to valproic acid relative to the other ions. Finally, this electrode can be used as an indicator electrode in determining the concentration of valproic acid in valproic acid tablets.

As a large-area solar radiation collector, luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) can be used as power generation units in semitransparent solar windows, modernized agricultural greenhouses and building facades. However, the external optical efficiency and long-term stability of the LSCs limit their practical applications due to the sensitivity of the emitters to the light and environmental conditions. Here, we used the concept of “”laminated glass”” to prepare LSCs, which consist of two waveguide layers and the quantum dots (QDs)/polymer interlayer, and we tune the refractive index of the different parts of the system to improve the external optical efficiency and stability of the LSCs, simultaneously. The waveguide layer can be glass, quartz, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and other transparent materials. The CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs were used as fluorophores to prepare the interlayer of the LSCs. The external optical efficiency of the laminated LSCs is associated with the refractive index of the three layers: the closer the refractive index, the higher the ηopt. The highest external optical efficiency of 3.4% has been achieved for the laminated PMMA/QDs-polymer/PMMA LSCs, which improved ~92% compared to the single-layered CdSe/CdS based LSCs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest efficiency for the LSCs based on CdSe/CdS QDs. These results pave the way to realize high efficiency laminated windows as power generation units by suitably tuning the structure of the LSC, and provide the theor. guidance for the LSCs utilized in building integrated photovoltaics.
