Fatty acids are an essential class of raw materials for the chem. industry. Fatty acids find widespread application in food, cosmetics, soaps, surfactants, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industry. A specific type of derivative- fatty acid Me esters are used as a bio based alternative to fossil fuels. A lot of research has undergone to develop novel efficient processes to purify fatty acids from reaction mixture or a mixture of fatty acids. Membrane performance is usually dependent on size of the mol. to be separated in the membrane and pore size which decides the rate of permeation of mol. through the membrane. This paper discusses about the performance of two polymer nanofiltration membranes developed recently in purifying a mixture of fatty acids and exhibits critical area being the determinant factor for mols. to permeate through the membrane. Epoxy nanofiltration membranes have separated EPA-EE and DHA-EE from each other based on mol. weight and critical area, whereas these membranes separated, small organic mols. in the mol. weight range 100-300 gmol-1 based on critical area. Epoxy nanofiltration membranes have also successfully separated saturated fatty acids from each other with selectivity of 10:1. Polydicyclopentadiene based nanofiltration membrane have shown to sep. saturated fatty acids from mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids with good selectivity based on critical area. This paper emphasizes critical area is a better representation of mol. size as compared to mol. weight
