Optically active, main-chain, liquid crystalline polyether-polyesters were prepared via room temperature polymerization The samples of the polyester had number-average mol.-weights 12,000-41,900 g/mol, the weight-average mol.-weights 24,500-135,000 g/mol and Tg 37-39° as determined by DSC anal. The polymers could be solution-cast into tough, flexible films or spun into fibers. Thermogravimetric anal. (TGA) of the polymers showed a 5% weight loss at 315-330°, indicating that these chiral polyesters have good thermal stability. The liquid crystalline phases of both the monomer and the polymer were studied by polarized light microscope (PLM).
