This study investigated the occurrence and health risk of six PCPs (triclosan, bisphenol-A, and four commonly used organic UV filters, i.e., homosalate (HMS), 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC), oxybenzone (BP-3), and octocrylene (OC)). River water and three trophic levels of fish species were collected from Huangpu River in Shanghai. The concentration range of the six PCPs were 1.48-89.76 ng/L in water and 0.40-10.75 ng/g dry weight in fish. Estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotient (THQ) of the PCPs indicated that consuming these fish would not pose non-carcinogenic risks. The maximum allowable fish consumption rates ranged from 85 to 1760 and 155 to 3230 meals per mo for children and adults, resp. As to the four organic UV filters, it is the first time to report the fish consumption advisories. Finally, the human health ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) values of HMS, 4-MBC, BP-3, OC, TCS, and BPA (i.e., 0.1218, 0.7311, 0.3494, 0.0477, 235.8, and 154.7 μg/L, resp.) were proposed, and they can serve as a valuable tech. reference for global development and revision of aquatic environmental quality standards for these emerging contaminants. In this work, for the first time, the degradation potential of synthetic musks (galaxolide and tonalide), UV filters (padimate O and octocrylene) and a pharmaceutical compound (carbamazepine) was studied in marine sediment samples, under laboratory conditions using sediment slurry incubations under biotic and abiotic conditions. Min. half life times under biotic conditions were found at 21 days, 129 days and 199 days for padimate O, galaxolide and carbamazepine, resp. Enrichments conducted under anoxic and oxic conditions demonstrated that degradations after one month of incubation either under both biotic and abiotic conditions were limited under anoxic conditions compared to oxic conditions for all the contaminants. Novel aerobic bacteria, able to degrade synthetic musks and UV filters have been isolated. These novel strains were mainly related to the Genus Bacillus. Based on these results, the isolated strains able to degrade such ECs, can have a strong implication in the natural resilience in marine environment, and could be used in remediation processes. A simple and ecofriendly sample preparation method was developed for quantifying fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics in surface water. Seventeen combinations of monoterpenes (menthol, thymol, and camphor), fatty acids (heptanoic, octanoic, nonanoic, and decanoic acids), and a benzoate ester (salol) were utilized for the in situ formation of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (hDESs) for liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME). The hDES comprising thymol and heptanoic acid (HA) exhibited the highest extraction efficiency for ofloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and enrofloxacin. Optimization via the one-variable-at-a-time strategy revealed that a 2:1 ratio of thymol to HA yielded the highest efficiency for antibiotic extraction at pH 4-7. Further, response surface methodol.-based optimization suggested that the optimal extraction conditions involved the use of appropriate amounts of thymol and HA to generate 100μL of hDES in 10 mL of aqueous sample with incubation at 52°C for 5 min, followed by automated shaking for 1 min. The collected hDES phase was diluted and subjected to liquid chromatog.-UV detection anal. The established method based on in situ formation of hDES coupled with shaker-assisted LLME (in situ hDES-SA-LLME) was validated. The method was specific and showed good linearity in the 15-3000 ng mL-1 concentration range (r2 ≥ 0.9997), with a limit of detection of 3.0 ng mL-1, limit of quantification of 9.0 ng mL-1, accuracy of 84.1-113.65%, and intra-day and inter-day precision of ≤7.78% RSD and ≤7.91% RSD, resp. The method was successfully applied to three different types of real surface water samples. Without toxic volatile organic solvents, the developed method allows for safe and rapid, yet reliable, anal. of FQ antibiotics. A Sauvignon Blanc wine was subjected to a maturation period of six months by using four different types of vessels in triplicate: cylindrical stainless steel tanks, oval-shaped polyethylene tanks, cubic-shaped polyethylene tanks, and clay jars. After maturation in the different vessels, wines were bottled using three different closures (natural cork, synthetic cork, and screwcaps). The volatile compound profiles of the wine samples were recorded by SPME-GC-MS throughout vessel maturation as well as after the bottle storage period. In general terms, wines stored in stainless steel tanks showed the highest contents of volatile compounds when compared with the other tested vessels. Moreover, wines from bottles capped with screwcaps showed the highest contents of most of the volatile compounds when compared with the other closures. Moreover, an interaction between the vessel and the closure was observed: when screwcaps were used during bottle aging, the resulting wines were very similar to those matured in stainless steel vessels. These results suggest that the use of screwcaps hides the differences originating from wine composition during maturation in vessels other than stainless steel. Results of kinetic studies afforded mechanistic insights into the principles governing this reaction, suggesting that the cooperative effects of the acid-base functions of catalysts would be of paramount importance for the efficient progression of the C-N bond breaking process, and consequently, CeO2 showed the best catalytic performance among the catalysts explored. The use of quantum dots (QDs) as donors in fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) offer several advantages for the development of multiplexed solid-phase QD-FRET nucleic acid hybridization assays. In this work, we identify several strategies based on the design of interfacial chem. for improving sensitivity, obtaining lower limits of detection (LOD) and enabling the regeneration and reuse of solid-phase QD-FRET hybridization assays. FRET-sensitized emission from acceptor dyes associated with hybridization events at immobilized QD donors provides the anal. signal in these assays. The minimization of active sensing area reduces background from QD donor PL and allows the resolution of smaller amounts of acceptor emission, thus lowering the LOD. The association of multiple acceptor dyes with each hybridization event can enhance FRET efficiency, thereby improving sensitivity. Many previous studies have used interfacial protein layers to generate selectivity; however, transient destabilization of these layers is shown to prevent efficient regeneration. To this end, we report a protein-free interfacial chem. and demonstrate the specific detection of as little as 2 pmol of target, as well as an improved capacity for regeneration.
