Cationic chiral Au(I) complexes catalyze asym. Pictet-Spengler reactions between tryptamines and arylaldehydes. The resulting tetrahydro-β-carbolines I (R1 = H, 5-Me, 5-OMe; R2 = Allyl, Bn, CH2Mes, etc.; R3 = Ph, 4-Et-C6H4, 2-CN-C6H4, 3ClC6H4, etc.)are obtained with wide functional group tolerance in high yield and with high enantioselectivities (up to 95%).
