Styrene oxide reacted with imidazole, its 2-methyl, 2-phenyl, and 4,5-diphenyl derivatives and benzimidazole in DMF in the presence of catalytic quantities of K at room temperature to give 45-98% of the corresponding 1-(2-hydroxy-2-phenylethyl)imidazole, which on heating with SOCl2 and KOH were dehydrated to give 51-90% trans-1-styrylimidazoles.
