Believing that cis-trans-dicarboxylic acids of cyclic saturated hydrocarbons might undergo a rearrangement similar to that of stable unsaturated acids into their labile forms, trans-hexahydro-p-phthalic acid was exposed 10 days in MeOH to an uviol lamp; there was no rearrangement, however, and only 10% of the trans-monomethyl ester, needles, m. 125°, was no obtained; after 14 days’ illumination, 10% of the di-Me ester, m. 71°, is obtained. Similarly, trans-pentamethylene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid after 10 days gives the trans-monomethyl ester, needles, m. 45°; after 30 days, about 10% each of the mono-Me and dimethyl ester, oil of disagreeable odor. BzOH after 8 days gives about 30% BzOMe; if a trace of HCl is added, the yield of ester is increased to about 56%. PhCH:CHCO2H is not perceptibly esterified in pure MeOH, but if a very small amount of HCl is added 4 g. acid after 8 days yields 2.5 g. of a mixture of stable and allo-acids and 1.5 g. of practically pure stable ester.
