Green synthesis of benzazole-2-ones I (R = H, 6-Me, 6-Cl, 6-F, 4-Me; X = NH, O, S) by the reaction of aniline derivatives 3-R1-4-R2-2-XC6H2NH2 (R1 = H, Me; R2 = H, Me, Cl, F) with inexpensive and easily accessible sodium cyanate has been reported. Good to excellent yields of products have been obtained under catalyst- and ligand-free conditions in water as solvent. This procedure avoids the use of time-consuming and tedious column chromatog. and the products were easily isolated by simple extraction followed by washing with dichloromethane.
