The practical problems of insufficient mechanical strength, poor processability, tedious synthesis and flammability facing shape memory polymers have limited their further usage in industrial fields, especially in construction and aerospace. A novel and very simple method of ternary polymerization is presented here to prepare multi-functional copolyesters from general poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) through the new well-designed third monomer that features pendent phenylacetylene-phenylimide units. The pi-pi stacking between phenylacetylene groups as a reversible net-point not only endows the copolyesters with good shape memory and self-healability, but also reinforces the interchain interaction, leading to high tensile strength (79.6-89.6 MPa). Interestingly enough, the phenylacetylene can synergistically crosslink with the unsaturated C N group generated from the phenylimide during burning, resulting in excellent flame retardancy. Thermoplastic smart copolyesters can be designed into fire alarms and can also be used for 3D printing. The printed geometries exhibit good shape memory behaviors, which could be deformed into a small size to save space during transportation/storage and allow manufacturing freedom for space applications.

In this study, we investigated the bioactive potential (antibacterial and antioxidant), anticancer activity and detailed phytochemical analysis of Selaginella repanda (S. repanda) ethanolic crude extract for the very first time using different in vitro approaches. Furthermore, computer-aided prediction of pharmacokinetic properties and safety profile of the identified phytoconstituents were also employed in order to provide some useful insights for drug discovery. S. repanda, which is a rich source of potent natural bioactive compounds, showed promising antibacterial activity against the tested pathogenic bacteria (S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. coli and S. flexneri). The crude extract displayed favorable antioxidant activity against both 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) (IC50 = 231.6 mu g/mL) and H2O2 (IC50 = 288.3 mu g/mL) molecules. S. repanda also showed favorable and effective anticancer activity against all three malignant cancer cells in a dose/time dependent manner. Higher activity was found against lung (A549) (IC50 = 341.1 mu g/mL), followed by colon (HCT-116) (IC50 = 378.8 mu g/mL) and breast (MCF-7) (IC50 = 428.3 mu g/mL) cancer cells. High resolution-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HR-LC-MS) data of S. repanda crude extract revealed the presence of diverse bioactive/chemical components, including fatty acids, alcohol, sugar, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, coumarins and phenolics, which can be the basis and major cause for its bioactive potential. Therefore, achieved results from this study confirmed the efficacy of S. repanda and a prospective source of naturally active biomolecules with antibacterial, antioxidant and anticancer potential. These phytocompounds alone with their favorable pharmacokinetics profile suggests good lead and efficiency of S. repanda with no toxicity risks. Finally, further in vivo experimental investigations can be promoted as probable candidates for various therapeutic functions, drug discovery and development.

Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch., Rosaceae) is the subject of many research studies due to its numerous features such as unique taste, aroma and health qualities. The aim of this research was to determine the chemical constituents and toxicity of the oil derived from Alpinia katsumadai seeds against Tribolium castaneum, Liposcelis bostrychophila and Lasioderma serricorne. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and was investigated by gas chromatograhy/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The principal components of the essential oil were methyl cinnamate (64.2 %), cis-4-decen-1-ol (7.3 %) and octahydro-cis-2H-Inden-2-one (6.7 %). The essential oil and the two individial compounds exhibited potential insecticidal activities against three stored product insects. The essential oil possessed contact toxicity against T. castaneum, L. serricorne and L. bostrychophila (LD50 = 52.6 mu g/adult, 17.4 mu g/adult and 35.6 mu g/cm(2), respectively). Methyl cinnamate was the main contributor to its contact activity against T. castaneum, L. serricorne and L. bostrychophila (LD50 = 5.0 mu g/adult, 2.2 mu g/adult and 23.5 mu g/cm, respectively). The contact toxicity and repellent activity of the essential oil and cis-4-decen-1-ol against T. castaneum, L. bostrychophila and L. serricorne were recorded for the first time in this paper. A. katsumadai oil exhibited strong repellent activity against T. castaneum and L. bostrychophila, even at low concentrations. The results provide a basis of the development and utilization as biopesticide for control of insects.

Conventional methods to improve the flame retardancy of polymeric materials usually involve the use of flame-retardant elements such as Cl, Br and P, however, their use may bring more smoke and toxic gases hazards, and more importantly, cause non-negligible environmental and ecological problems. In this work, we put forward a novel green strategy that eliminates the use of any conventional flame-retardant elements to improve the flame retardancy by incorporating a synergistically cross-linkable structure (named PN) containing phenylacetylene and phenylimide groups. The resulting PN copolymer exhibited an excellent 55% lower smoke release rate and 68% lower heat release rate than the pure polymer, as well as a high LOI value of 32% and UL-94 V-0 rating with excellent anti-dripping performance. TG-DSC, rheological and FTIR results proved the high cross-linking ability of the PN copolymer due to the synergistic cross-linking effect between the imide-isoimide rearrangement of phenylimide and the self-cross-linking of phenylacetylene. The SEM, Raman and Py-GC/MS results further upheld the condensed phase flame-retardant mechanism. This eco-friendly synergistic cross-linking strategy provided new perspective for the design and synthesis of polymeric materials with excellent flame retardancy, great anti-dripping performance, and low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gas.

p-Coumaric acid is a known inhibitor of tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the initial steps of the melanin synthesis in human and other species. However, its low lipophilicity impairs its penetration through skin and efficacy as antimelanogenic agent indeed. Accordingly, this paper reports the assessment of several coumaric acid derivatives as tyrosinase inhibitors and antimelanogenic agents in in vitro, in silico and ex vivo assays. The compounds were designed with modifications in the aromatic and acid moieties of p-coumaric acid, being the coumarate esters the most promising derivatives. The compounds showed higher tyrosinase inhibitory activity (pIC(50), 3.7-4.2) than the parent acid, being compounds 1d, 1e and 1f the most potent inhibitors. Docking analysis showed that these esters are competitive inhibitors per se, and act independently of a redox mechanism as suggested by DPPH assays. Moreover, the esters showed efficacy in reducing the melanin deposition in human skin fragments at 0.1% concentration, especially compound le. In summary, there is an important equilibria between tyrosinase affinity and lipophilicity that must be considered to get effective antimelanogenic agents with adequate permeability in the skin.

Polyaniline coated on particles of celite is used as support to load palladium catalyst. This heterogenized Celite center dot PANI center dot Pd system, is used as an efficient catalyst for chemoselective hydrogenation reactions. The catalyst is characterized by usual spectral, analytical techniques and studied for hydrogenation reactions at ambient conditions. The mild reaction conditions allow the control over the reactions and excellent selectivity is achieved in number of conversions. Hydrogenation of a carbon-carbon double bond was favored over other polar pi-bond systems, while labile functional groups such as benzyl ether, benzyl esters, cyano, nitro and halogen remained unaffected. Primary amines were converted to N,N-dimethyl amines with formaldehyde, the double bond of coumarin was selectively hydrogenated without opening of the lactone functionality.
