Aims/Introduction Painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (PDPN) has a significant impact on the patient’s quality of life. The prevalence of PDPN in the Middle East and North Africa region has been reported to be almost double that of populations in the UK. We sought to determine the prevalence of PDPN and its associated factors in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients attending secondary care in Qatar. Materials and Methods This was a cross-sectional study of 1,095 participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus attending Qatar’s two national diabetes centers. PDPN and impaired vibration perception on the pulp of the large toes were assessed using the Douleur Neuropathique en 4 questionnaire with a cut-off >= 4 and the neurothesiometer with a cut-off >= 15 V, respectively. Results The prevalence of PDPN was 34.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] 31.7-37.3), but 80% of these patients had not previously been diagnosed or treated for this condition. Arabs had a higher prevalence of PDPN compared with South Asians (P < 0.05). PDPN was associated with impaired vibration perception adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 4.42 (95% CI 2.92-6.70), smoking AOR 2.43 (95% CI 1.43-4.15), obesity AOR 1.74 (95% CI 1.13-2.66), being female AOR 1.65 (95% CI: 1.03-2.64) and duration of diabetes AOR 1.08 (95% CI 1.05-1.11). Age, poor glycemic control, hypertension, physical activity and proteinuria showed no association with PDPN. Conclusions PDPN occurs in one-third of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients attending secondary care in Qatar, but the majority have not been diagnosed. Arabs are at higher risk for PDPN. A Cd(II)-based metal-organic framework as fluorescent chemical sensor, formulated as {[Cd-3(bmipia)(2)]center dot 10DMF center dot 5H(2)O}(n) (FCS-2), was synthesized through a hydrothermal process and structurally characterized via X-ray crystallography. FCS-2 represented a new three-dimensional framework assembled from a semi -rigid aromatic carboxylate ligand and exhibited fascinating fluorescence due to the highly crystalline and ordered molecular structure. The emission of FCS-2 could be quenched, interestingly, by the presence of trace 2,4,6-trinitrophenol, which indicated that FCS-2 can be applied as a potentially sensitive fluorescent chemical sensor for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds.

The complete conversion of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin in lignocellulosic biomass into value-added chemicals is of great significance in biorefinery processes. Herein, a cascade-step strategy was developed for the conversion of hemicellulose and lignin into mixed organic acids, and cellulose into ethylene glycol. Typical biomass of Miscanthus was first treated with formic acid in the presence of H2O2, giving a formic acid solution and cellulosic biomass. Lignin in Miscanthus was oxidized to low polymerized organic acids through linkage cleavages and aromatic ring ruptures during the treatment process, forming a homogeneous formic acid solution with a weight yield of 95%. Hemicellulose was transformed into maleic acid at 56.2% selectivity via a hydrolysis-dehydration-oxidation process. Both hemicellulose and lignin were degraded into organic acids with an overall weight yield of 92.4%. The cellulose in the solid residue had a hydrophilic surface and is highly accessible to catalysts in the aqueous solution, and it was totally converted into ethylene glycol with a yield of up to 65.7% over a binary catalyst of H2WO4-Ru/C. Relying on such a cascade reaction strategy, the three major components of Miscanthus were transformed into mixed organic acids and ethylene glycol, which provides a potential strategy for complete valorisation of biomass into value-added chemicals.

Background Several studies have reported the association between polymorphisms in Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) gene family and risk of Multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the results have been inconsistent and inconclusive. To resolve this issue, here we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the MMP-91562 C/T (rs3918242), MMP-3 (- 1612 5A/6A), and MMP-2 (- 1306 C/T) polymorphisms and susceptibility to MS. Methods We conducted a comprehensive systematic search in the major electronic database, including Scopus and PubMed to look up for relevant studies published before December 2019 that surveyed the association between the MMP-91562 C/T (rs3918242), MMP-3 (- 1612 5A/6A), and MMP-2 (- 1306 C/T) polymorphisms and susceptibility to MS. The level of association between the polymorphisms and susceptibility to MS in the polled analysis was determined by calculating the odds ratio (OR) and the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). Results We found 15 studies containing 2430 MS subjects and 2304 controls. A statistically significant association was observed in the all five comparisons of the MMP-91562 C/T polymorphism and MS risk as follows: dominant model (OR = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.03-2.53, P = 0.03), recessive model (OR = 2.69, 95% CI = 1.68-4.29, P < 0.001), allelic model (OR = 1.51, 95% CI = 1-2.28, P = 0.04), TT vs. CC model (OR = 3.20, 95% CI = 1.87-5.46, P < 0.001), and CT vs. CC model (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.02-2.28, P = 0.04). Conclusions Our meta-analysis revealed significant association of MMP-9 (- 1562 C/T) Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) with MS susceptibility that increased the disease risk. IRMOF-3 with a high surface area prepared by a hydrothermal method was used for deposition of Pd(OAc)(2) on IRMOF-3 particles. Photoredox chemistry has greatly stimulated the application of radical based transformations in medicinal chemistry and early drug discovery in recent years. Although the evolutionary significance of the early-diverging flowering plant Amborella (Amborella trichopoda Baill.) is widely recognized, its metabolic landscape, particularly specialized metabolites, is currently underexplored. In this work, we analyzed the metabolomes of Amborella tissues using liquid chromatography high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-HR-ESI-MS). By matching the mass spectra of Amborella metabolites with those of authentic phytochemical standards in the publicly accessible libraries, 63, 39, and 21 compounds were tentatively identified in leaves, stems, and roots, respectively. Free amino acids, organic acids, simple sugars, cofactors, as well as abundant glycosylated and/or methylated phenolic specialized metabolites were observed in Amborella leaves. Diverse metabolites were also detected in stems and roots, including those that were not identified in leaves. To understand the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites with glycosyl and methyl modifications, families of small molecule UDP-dependent glycosyltransferases (UGTs) and O-methyltransferases (OMTs) were identified in the Amborella genome and the InterPro database based on conserved functional domains. Of the 17 phylogenetic groups of plant UGTs (A-Q) defined to date, Amborella UGTs are absent from groups B, N, and P, but they are highly abundant in group L. Among the 25 Amborella OMTs, 7 cluster with caffeoyl-coenzyme A (CCoA) OMTs involved in lignin and phenolic metabolism, whereas 18 form a clade with plant OMTs that methylate hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonoids, or alkaloids. Overall, this first report of metabolomes and candidate metabolic genes in Amborella provides a starting point to a better understanding of specialized metabolites and biosynthetic enzymes in this basal lineage of flowering plants.

Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are categorized into generations which differ in terms of design, aerosol production, and customizability. Current and former smokers prefer third-generation devices that satisfy tobacco cravings more effectively than older generations. Recent studies indicate that EC aerosols from first- and second-generation devices contain reactive carbonyls and free radicals and can cause in vitro cytotoxicity. Third-generation ECs have not been adequately studied. Further, previous studies have focused on cells from the respiratory tract, whereas those of the oral cavity, which is exposed to high levels of EC aerosols, have been understudied. We quantified the production of reactive carbonyls and free radicals by a third-generation EC and investigated the induction of cytotoxicity and oxidative stress in normal and cancerous human oral cell lines using a panel of eight commercial EC liquids. We found that EC aerosols produced using a new atomizer contained formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein, but did not contain detectable levels of free radicals. We found that EC aerosols generated from only one of the eight liquids tested using a new atomizer induced cytotoxicity against two human oral cells in vitro. Treatment of oral cells with the cytotoxic EC aerosol caused a concomitant increase in intracellular oxidative stress. As atomizer age increased with repeated use of the same atomizer, carbonyl production, radical emissions, and cytotoxicity increased. Overall, our results suggest that thirdgeneration ECs may cause adverse effects in the oral cavity and normal EC use, which involves repeated use of the same atomizer to generate aerosol, may enhance the potential toxic effects of third-generation ECs.

However, the high activation barrier for thermal decarboxylative carbometalation that often requires 140 degrees C reaction temperature limits both the substrate scope as well as the scope of suitable reactions that can sustain such conditions. Numerous reactions, for example, decarboxylative fluorination that is well developed for aliphatic carboxylic acids, are out of reach for the aromatic counterparts with current reaction chemistry. Here, we report a conceptually different approach through a low-barrier photoinduced ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT)-enabled radical decarboxylative carbometalation strategy, which generates a putative high-valent arylcopper(III) complex, from which versatile facile reductive eliminations can occur. We demonstrate the suitability of our new approach to address previously unrealized general decarboxylative fluorination of benzoic acids.

A cyclopropanation/intramolecular rearrangement initiated by the Michael addition of in situ generated ortho-quinone methides (o-QMs) has been developed for the enantioselective synthesis of 2-aryl-2,3-dihydrobenzofurans containing two consecutive stereogenic centers, including a quaternary carbon atom. In the presence of a chiral oxazaborolidinium ion catalyst, the reaction proceeded in excellent yields (up to 95 %) with excellent stereoselectivity (up to >99 ee, up to >20:1 d.r.).
