These two methods provide a direct access to a large variety of aliphatic and aromatic alkyl silyl acetals (30 examples) and to the corresponding aldehydes (13 examples) upon hydrolysis. A Cd(II)-based metal-organic framework as fluorescent chemical sensor, formulated as {[Cd-3(bmipia)(2)]center dot 10DMF center dot 5H(2)O}(n) (FCS-2), was synthesized through a hydrothermal process and structurally characterized via X-ray crystallography. FCS-2 represented a new three-dimensional framework assembled from a semi -rigid aromatic carboxylate ligand and exhibited fascinating fluorescence due to the highly crystalline and ordered molecular structure. The emission of FCS-2 could be quenched, interestingly, by the presence of trace 2,4,6-trinitrophenol, which indicated that FCS-2 can be applied as a potentially sensitive fluorescent chemical sensor for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds.

Amino acid derivatives undergo non-Kolbe electrolysis to afford enantiomerically enriched alpha-alkoxyamino derivatives through intermediate chiral carbenium ions. The products contain N,O-acetals which are important structural motifs found in bioactive natural products. The reaction is performed in a continuous flow electrochemical reactor coupled to a 2D-HPLC for immediate online analysis. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an important characteristic of hypertensive heart disease. Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockers have been shown to be effective drugs for the reversal of LVH. Clinical and experimental studies have shown that Zi Shen Huo Luo Formula (ZSHLF) can improve the efficacy of perindopril in the treatment of hypertensive LVH, but its mechanism is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the possible mechanism to improve the efficacy of perindopril. First, we identified 23 compounds in ZSHLF by ultra performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) analysis, among which ferulic acid, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, berberine, rutin, quercetin, kaempferol, stachydrine, and tiliroside have been reported to reduce blood pressure and exhibit cardioprotective effects. Second, we treated spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) with perindopril and ZSHLF for 12 continuous weeks and found that chronic use of perindopril could increase the aldosterone (ALD) levels and cause aldosterone breakthrough (ABT). ZSHLF combined with perindopril reduced the ALD levels, interfered with ABT, decreased blood pressure, improved left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, and decreased the collagen volume fraction; these effects were superior to those of perindopril alone. In vitro experiments, ALD-induced cardiomyocytes (H9c2 cells) and cardiac fibroblasts were treated with ZSHLF-containing serum, which suppressed ALD-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and cardiac fibroblast proliferation, increased mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) and Cav-1 colocalization and decreased phosphorylated epidermal growth factor receptor (pEGFR) and phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (pERK) protein expression the cells. In conclusion, ZSHLF can interfere with ABT and affect the pathological role of ALD by affecting MR and Cav-1 interactions and EGFR/ERK signaling pathway. These effects represent a possible mechanism by which ZSHLF improves the efficacy of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) in hypertensive LVH treatment. However, the major bioactive components or metabolites responsible for the effects and the implications of these findings in patients need further verification.

The implementation of machine learning models has brought major changes in the decision-making process for materials design. One matter of concern for the data-driven approaches is the lack of negative data from unsuccessful synthetic attempts, which might generate inherently imbalanced datasets. We propose the application of the one-class classification methodology as an effective tool for tackling these limitations on the materials design problems. This is a concept of learning based only on a well-defined class without counter examples. An extensive study on the different one-class classification algorithms is performed until the most appropriate workflow is identified for guiding the discovery of emerging materials belonging to a relatively small class, that being the weakly bound polyaromatic hydrocarbon co-crystals. The two-step approach presented in this study first trains the model using all the known molecular combinations that form this class of co-crystals extracted from the Cambridge Structural Database (1722 molecular combinations), followed by scoring possible yet unknown pairs from the ZINC15 database (21 736 possible molecular combinations). Focusing on the highest-ranking pairs predicted to have higher probability of forming co-crystals, materials discovery can be accelerated by reducing the vast molecular space and directing the synthetic efforts of chemists. Further on, using interpretability techniques a more detailed understanding of the molecular properties causing co-crystallization is sought after. The applicability of the current methodology is demonstrated with the discovery of two novel co-crystals, namely pyrene-6H-benzo[c]chromen-6-one (1) and pyrene-9,10-dicyanoanthracene (2).

Catalytic conversion of lignin to versatile aromatic compounds is attracting increasing attention. However, it is highly desirable but challenging to produce a specific chemical with high yield through lignin depolymerization in a one-pot process because of the complex structure of the lignin molecule (mainly composed of H, G, and S units). In this study, a series of metal-based deep eutectic solvents (M-DESs) were prepared and used for the catalytic tailoring of lignin H units to produce value-added methyl p-hydroxycinnamate (MPC). In particular, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) showed excellent catalytic performance for the selective production of MPC as the sole product with high yield and selectivity (105.8 mg g(-1) and 74.1%, respectively). Extensive characterizations using 2D HSQC NMR, C-13 NMR, and GPC demonstrated that MPC was obtained from the selective tailoring of p-coumaric acid (pCA) units via the cleavage of ester bonds in lignin. Furthermore, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) also exhibited efficiency to other herbaceous lignins, and showed excellent recyclability. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy for the valorization of lignin.

The paper describes synthesis of a novel mesoporous and magnetically regenerated heterogeneous nanocatalyst with high catalytic activity. The synthesis strategy includes a one-step polycondensation reaction of melamine, formaldehyde and FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O in a simple and sustainable manner and followed by immobilization of Pd(II) on it. Formation and properties of nanocomposite were characterized by different techniques; the results were illustrated good surface area and a well-defined mesopore structure. Also the palladium-catalyzed C-C bond formation between aryl halides and olefins was selected to survey the activity of the synthesized nanocatalyst. Central Composite Design (CCD) strategy was used to predict the optimum synthesis conditions and identify the remarkable and effective factors including temperature, period of the reaction and amount of catalyst. These results were also verified experimentally. In order to minimize systematic error, the experimental runs as a randomized fashion were accomplished.

In this study, the unique capacity of bifunctional BrOnsted bases to generate alpha-branched ketone dienolates and control both site- and stereoselectivity of their addition reactions to representative classes of carbon electrophiles (i.e., vinyl sulfones, nitroolefins, formaldehyde) is documented. We demonstrate that by using selected chiral tertiary amine/squaramide catalysts, the reactions of beta,gamma-unsaturated cycloalkanones proceed through the dienolate C alpha almost exclusively and provide all-carbon quaternary cyclic ketone adducts in good yields with very high enantioselectivities. A minor amount (<5%) of gamma-addition is observed when nitroolefins are used as electrophiles. The parent acyclic ketone dienolates proved to be less reactive under these conditions, and thus still constitute a challenging class of substrates.
