This study investigated the impacts of selective sole carbon source-induced micropollutants (MPs) cometabolism of Chlorella sp. by: (i) extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), superoxide dismutase and peroxidase enzyme production; (ii) MPs removal efficiency and cometabolism rate; (iii) MPs’ potential degradation products identification; and (iv) degradation pathways and validation using the Eawag database to differentiate the cometabolism of Chlorella sp. with other microbes. Adding the sole carbon sources in the presence of MPs increased EPS and enzyme concentrations from 2 to 100-fold in comparison with only sole carbon sources. This confirmed that MPs cometabolism had occurred. The removal efficiencies of tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, and bisphenol A ranged from 16-99%, 32-92%, and 58-99%, respectively. By increasing EPS and enzyme activity, the MPs concentrations accumulated in microalgae cells also fell 400-fold. The cometabolism process resulted in several degradation products of MPs. This study drew an insightful understanding of cometabolism for MPs remediation in wastewater. Based on the results, proper carbon sources for microalgae can be selected for practical applications to remediate MPs in wastewater while simultaneously recovering biomass for several industries and gaining revenue. Demand for sustainable polar aprotic solvents is increasing due to their unique solubilizing properties and the toxicity of conventional analogs, which are facing pressure from extensive safety legislation. Polar aprotic solvents are particularly difficult to produce renewably because polar molecules that lack hydroxyl groups are rarely found in abundance in the natural world. Here, we explore the use of diformylxylose (DFX), a xylose-derived molecule that can be produced in a single step from lignocellulosic biomass, as a novel polar aprotic bio-based solvent. We notably demonstrate that diformylxylose shows a similar performance to conventional polar aprotic solvents (DMF, NMP, DMSO) in alkylation, cross-coupling (Heck), and hydrogenation reactions. We also demonstrate its straightforward production from commercial xylose and show that it is non-mutagenic, according to the Ames test. Renewable DFX appears to be a greener alternative to common polar aprotic solvents that are considered problematic for industry.

A new triazole-functionalized tetracarboxylic acid ligand (H4L) has been synthesized and utilized for the fabrication of a 3D Zn-II organic framework with a Zn-4(-COO)(6) cluster as the secondary building unit. Many classical and emerging methodologies in organic chemistry rely on carbon dioxide (CO2) extrusion to generate reactive intermediates for bond-forming events. Synthetic reactions that involve the microscopic reverse-the carboxylation of reactive intermediates-have conventionally been undertaken using very different conditions. We report that chemically stable C(sp(3)) carboxylates, such as arylacetic acids and malonate half-esters, undergo uncatalyzed reversible decarboxylation in dimethylformamide solution. Decarboxylation-carboxylation occurs with substrates resistant to protodecarboxylation by Bronsted acids under otherwise identical conditions. Isotopically labeled carboxylic acids can be prepared in high chemical and isotopic yield by simply supplying an atmosphere of (CO2)-C-13 to carboxylate salts in polar aprotic solvents. An understanding of carboxylate reactivity in solution enables conditions for the trapping of aldehydes, ketones, and alpha,beta-unsaturated esters.

Regioselectivity for intramolecular Diels-Alder (IMDA) reactions of 6-acetoxy-6-alkenylcyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-ones that were formed by oxidation of 2-alkenylphenols with lead tetraacetate in acetic acid were studied. Bridged regioselectivity was observed in the IMDA reactions of 6-acetoxy-6-alkenylcyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-ones having a dienophile part which could conjugate with an aromatic group. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that conjugation of the dienophile with neighboring aromatic groups lowered the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energy gap and preceded bridged [4 + 2] adducts.

Recently, He et al. reported that CCKB receptors located in the neocortex of the brain when bound to their bound natural ligand, CCK peptides, enhance memory, bringing up the possibility that agonists targeting the CCKB receptor may act as therapeutic agents in diseases in which memory loss is marked as observed in dementia and Alzheimer’s. In this report, we describe the synthesis of novel low-molecular weight benzoamine CCKB receptor agonists. The compounds made in this series were determined to be mostly partial agonists, although some antagonists were identified, as well, capable of triggering calcium release in a cell line that overexpresses the CCKB receptor. Compound 35 demonstrated an EC50 of 0.15 mu M in the cell-based assay, but more importantly, several of the compounds, including 35, demonstrated a physiological effect, inducing long-term potentiation in rat brains comparable to the CCK-8 peptide albeit at much higher concentrations. Based on these findings, benzoamines may be the basis for a new series of CCKB receptor agonists in drug-discovery efforts that seek to develop therapeutics to prevent memory loss.

In the presented work, five bio-based and bio-degradable cyclic esters, i.e. lactones, have been investigated as possible phase change materials for applications in latent heat storage systems. Commercial natural lactones such as epsilon-caprolactone and gamma-valerolactone were easily purchased through chemical suppliers, while 1,2-campholide, oxa-adamantanone and dibenzochromen-6-one were synthesized through Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The compounds were characterized with respect to attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy, in order to confirm their chemical structures and identity. Subsequently, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to measure the phase change temperatures, enthalpies of fusion, degradation temperatures, as well to estimate the degree of supercooling. The lactones showed a wide range of phase change temperatures from -40 degrees C to 290 degrees C, making them a high interest for both low and high temperature latent heat storage applications, given the lack of organic phase change materials covering phase change temperature ranges below 0 degrees C and above 80 degrees C. However, low enthalpies of fusion, high degrees of supercooling and thermal degradations at low temperatures were registered for all samples, rendering them unsuitable as phase change materials.
