Three novel flexible sulfur-containing MOF materials named Co-URJC-5, Cu-URJC-6 and Zn-URJC-7, based on the 5,5′-thiodiisophthalic acid linker have been synthesized through solvothermal methods and characterized by different physicochemical techniques. Hydrogen adsorption analysis at room temperature reveals that these compounds display a gate-opening type adsorption mechanism at low pressures, attributed to the flexible nature of the H4TBTC ligand. This behavior is even more noticeable for Cu-URJC-6, since the layer arrangement by p-p stacking interactions between the aromatic layers could contribute to the flexibility of the structure. These results can be considered as a representative example to elucidate how MOF structures are built using flexible ligands and more significantly as a promising route for designing materials with selective gas sorption properties.

A Ni salt of phosphomolybdic acid (NiHPMA) was synthesized and characterized by various physico-chemical techniques such as EDX, UV-Visible spectroscopy, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy and XPS. FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy confirm the presence of Ni as a counter cation while UV-Visible and XPS studies to confirm the presence of Ni(ii) in the catalyst. The catalyst was evaluated for its bi-functional activity towards the tandem conversion of benzaldehyde to ethyl benzoate and it was found that very small amounts of Ni (2.64 x 10(-3)mmol) enhance the selectivity towards benzoate. A detailed mechanistic study was carried out by UV-Visible and Raman spectroscopy to confirm that both intermediate species, Mo-peroxo and Ni-oxo, are responsible for higher selectivity towards esters. Further, a study to determine the effect of addenda atoms (heteropoly acid) was also carried out. The catalyst was also found to be viable for a number of aldehydes under optimized conditions.

The antigen-antibody interaction determines the sensitivity and specificity of competitive immunoassay for hapten detection. In this paper, the specificity of a monoclonal antibody against alternariol-like compounds was evaluated through indirect competitive ELISA. The results showed that the antibody had cross-reactivity with 33 compounds with the binding affinity (expressed by IC50) ranging from 9.4 ng/mL to 12.0 mu g/mL. All the 33 compounds contained a common moiety and similar substituents. To understand how this common moiety and substituents affected the recognition ability of the antibody, a three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) between the antibody and the 33 alternariol-like compounds was constructed using comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) methods. The q(2) values of the CoMFA and CoMSIA models were 0.785 and 0.782, respectively, and the r(2) values were 0.911 and 0.988, respectively, indicating that the models had good predictive ability. The results of 3D-QSAR showed that the most important factor affecting antibody recognition was the hydrogen bond mainly formed by the hydroxyl group of alternariol, followed by the hydrophobic force mainly formed by the methyl group. This study provides a reference for the design of new hapten and the mechanisms for antibody recognition.

From the perspective of green chemistry, in catalytic systems, being low cost and eco-friendly, in addition to high chemical and thermal stability, are requirements of support materials. In this regard, we used apple seed starch as an accessible, nontoxic, and cost-effective support material. In order to take advantage of magnetic separation, the magnetite nanoparticles were chosen as an ideal pair for apple seed starch. Furthermore, during the Schiff base reaction, the magnetic apple seed starch was functionalized with 2,2 ‘-furil along with amine functionality to be used as a bio-support for immobilization of cobalt. The introduction of cobalt had a significant effect on the greenness of the catalyst and reducing its price. FT-IR, TGA, XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, VSM, ninhydrin test, element mapping, AAS, and EDX analysis were applied to characterize the newly prepared catalyst. The effectiveness of this novel Schiff base supported catalyst was evaluated in the Mizoroki-Heck and the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions. High reactivity and selectivity were among the most prominent characteristics of the catalyst as compared to previously reported catalysts. The longevity test and hot filtration showed the ability to use the catalyst at least 5 times and negligible cobalt leaching during the reaction, respectively. This work is the first report on the usage of apple seed starch as a supporting catalyst and 2,2 ‘-furil as a ligand in the catalyst modifications and catalytic activity. Accordingly, this can be the beginning of an attractive way in the design and synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts.

Recently, He et al. reported that CCKB receptors located in the neocortex of the brain when bound to their bound natural ligand, CCK peptides, enhance memory, bringing up the possibility that agonists targeting the CCKB receptor may act as therapeutic agents in diseases in which memory loss is marked as observed in dementia and Alzheimer’s. Despite advances in ovarian cancer treatment, the five-year overall survival rate is less than 30% with the presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs). To develop CSC-targeting therapy, a series of 18 beta-glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) derivatives containing cinnamamide moiety have been designed, synthesized, and screened for their antiproliferative activity in SKOV3 and OVCAR3 cells. Most of the compounds exhibited stronger antiproliferative activity than GA, and compound 7c was the most active one. Further biological studies showed that compound 7c could induce apoptosis and suppress migration. In addition, compound 7c could not only observably decrease the colony formation and sphere formation ability, but also significantly reduce the CD44(+), CD133(+), and ALDH(+) subpopulation in SKOV3 and OVCAR3 cells. In conclusion, these results indicate that compound 7c is a promising anti-CSC agent for further anti-ovarian cancer studies.
