In this work, statistical physics treatment has been employed to understand the olfaction mechanism through the study of the dose-olfactory response of putative adsorption process of key food odorants onto the human olfactory receptor OR2W1. This is in order to obtain new steric and energetic characterizations at the molecular level of this chemical sense system. Three models have been proposed: a monolayer, a double layer and a three layers model. The monolayer model with identical and independent receptor sites has been chosen as an appropriate one to present a good correlation with the experimental dose-response curves. Indeed, the numerical values of the three fitted parameters (R-M, n, C-1/2) are used to characterize the size of the human olfactory receptor binding sites and the interactions between eight key food odorants i.e., (R)-(-)-carvone, (S)-(-)-limonene, (R)-(+)limonene, 2-phenylethanthiol, 3-mercaptohexyl acetate, methyl cinnamate, cinnamyl acetate and 2-phenylethyl acetate and OR2W1 through the receptor site size distribution (RSD) and to determine an olfactory band of these odorants through the determination of the adsorption energy values and the adsorption energy distributions (AEDs). In the presented work, five bio-based and bio-degradable cyclic esters, i.e. lactones, have been investigated as possible phase change materials for applications in latent heat storage systems. Commercial natural lactones such as epsilon-caprolactone and gamma-valerolactone were easily purchased through chemical suppliers, while 1,2-campholide, oxa-adamantanone and dibenzochromen-6-one were synthesized through Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The compounds were characterized with respect to attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy, in order to confirm their chemical structures and identity. Subsequently, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to measure the phase change temperatures, enthalpies of fusion, degradation temperatures, as well to estimate the degree of supercooling. The lactones showed a wide range of phase change temperatures from -40 degrees C to 290 degrees C, making them a high interest for both low and high temperature latent heat storage applications, given the lack of organic phase change materials covering phase change temperature ranges below 0 degrees C and above 80 degrees C. However, low enthalpies of fusion, high degrees of supercooling and thermal degradations at low temperatures were registered for all samples, rendering them unsuitable as phase change materials.

We report herein a visible-light-promoted, highly practical carboxylation of readily accessible aryl triflates at ambient temperature and a balloon pressure of CO2 by the combined use of palladium and photoredox Ir(III) catalysts. Strikingly, the stoichiometric metallic reductant is replaced by a nonmetallic amine reductant providing an environmentally benign carboxylation process. In addition, one-pot synthesis of a carboxylic acid directly from phenol and modification of estrone and concise synthesis of pharmaceutical drugs adapalene and bexarotene have been accomplished via late-stage carboxylation reaction. Furthermore, a parallel decarboxylation-carboxylation reaction has been demonstrated in an H-type closed vessel that is an interesting concept for the strategic sector. Spectroscopic and spectroelectrochemical studies indicated electron transfer from the Ir(III)/DIPEA combination to generate aryl carboxylate and Pd(0) for catalytic turnover.

Abundant aromatic carboxylic acids exist in great structural diversity from nature and synthesis. To date, the synthetically valuable decarboxylative functionalization of benzoic acids is realized mainly by transition-metal-catalyzed decarboxylative cross couplings. However, the high activation barrier for thermal decarboxylative carbometalation that often requires 140 degrees C reaction temperature limits both the substrate scope as well as the scope of suitable reactions that can sustain such conditions. Numerous reactions, for example, decarboxylative fluorination that is well developed for aliphatic carboxylic acids, are out of reach for the aromatic counterparts with current reaction chemistry. Here, we report a conceptually different approach through a low-barrier photoinduced ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT)-enabled radical decarboxylative carbometalation strategy, which generates a putative high-valent arylcopper(III) complex, from which versatile facile reductive eliminations can occur. We demonstrate the suitability of our new approach to address previously unrealized general decarboxylative fluorination of benzoic acids.

In the present study, the effect of enzyme pretreatment on essential oil recoveries from sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) leaves was evaluated. Moreover, the consideration on the use of hydrodistilled residue by-products as a source of bioactive phytochemicals with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and repellent effects against the stored-grain pest Tribolium castaneum was examined. Results showed that the enzymatic pretreatment increased the extraction yield of essential oil by 400, 417, and 478% in hemicellulase-, cellulase-, and viscozyme-treated samples, respectively. Phenylpropanoids including methyl cinnamate, methyl eugenol, eugenol and estragol were found as the main components, and were particularly abundant in cellulase-treated samples. From the hydrodistilled residue of enzyme-treated samples, better recoveries of total phenols (TPC) (258.3-470.9 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoids (TFC) (59.4-94.3 mg QE/g extract) were observed. Using the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, a strong antioxidant activity of the rosmarinic-rich extract was observed. Such an activity which was mediated through electron transfer mechanism was highly correlated with the TPC, TFC and rosmarinic acid content. The in vitro bioassay showed that methanol extract (6.29 and 12.58 mu L/cm(2)) had repellent activity against the stored-grain pest Tribolium castaneum. These results suggest the potential of enzyme pretreatment to promote the use of hydrodistilled residue by-products as a valuable source of natural antioxidants and repellents ingredients. The direct esterification of alcohols with non-noble metal-based catalytic systems faces great challenges. Here, we report a new chrome-based catalyst stabilized by a single pentaerythritol decorated Anderson-type polyoxometalate, [N(C4H9)(4)](3)[CrMo6O18(OH)(3)C{(OCH2)(3)CH2OH}], which can realize the efficient transformation from alcohols to esters by H2O2 oxidation in good yields and high selectivity without extra organic ligands. A variety of alcohols with different functionalities including some natural products and pharmaceutical intermediates are tolerated in this system. The chrome-based catalyst can be recycled several times and still keep the original configuration and catalytic activity. We also propose a reasonable catalytic mechanism and prove the potential for industrial applications.

The genus Ocimum displays excellent variability among the species and sub-species due to the highly crosspollinated nature and interspecific hybridization. The present investigation was carried out to identify the commercially promising growth stage(s) in different Ocimum for exatraction of oil and bioactive compounds at heighest. A set of three cultivated species were evaluated to study the variation in morpho-physiological traits and essential oil composition harvested at three stages namely vegetative, flowering and seed setting stage. The experiment was conducted for three consecutive years in factorial randomized complete block design with three replicates. The analysis of variance exhibited that the individual effect of Ocimum species and growth stage along with their interaction effect was significant in all the morpho-physiological parameters and bioactive constituent of oil in a pooled analysis. Highest plant height (103.95 cm) was observed in O. gratissimum L. harvested at seed setting stage while harvesting at flowering stage exhibited maximum leaf area (26.80 cm(2)), oil (0.52 %) and eugenol content (85.82 %). Sweet basil harvested at seed setting stage disclosed maximum branches per plant (21.53) and leaves per plant (4949) although linalool content (47.99 %) was found highest in harvested at flowering stage. O. basilicum L. was detected a great source of methyl chavicol (7.48 %) though this species was weaker source for methyl cinnamate. Among the studied species, O. gratissimum showed a negligible amount of methyl eugenol content in oil. A positive correlation between the morpho-physiological traits, oil content and its constituents with the various growth stages were recorded. None of bioactive compounds exhibited any correlation with oil content. Principle component analysis revealed that of the total variation, O. gratissimum contributed maximum (61.58 %) variation followed by O. basilicum (35.36 %). The results of current study suggested that the different Ocimum species can be harvest at various growth stages to get the maximum yield and target chemical compounds based on the needy industrial value.

Treatment of 2-arylbenzoic acids with N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) and NaI at 70 degrees C under fluorescent lighting condition gave the corresponding 3,4-benzocoumarins in good yields under transition-metal-free condition. It was found that the reactivity of NCS with NaI for the formation of 3,4-benzocoumarins from 2-arylbenzoic acids was as high as that with NIS. Thus, the formation of carboxyl radicals and their cyclization onto an aromatic ring from 2-arylbenzoic acids with much less expensive NCS and NaI, than NIS could be successfully carried out to form 3,4-benzocoumarins.
