The first cerium photocatalyzed dehydrogenative lactonization of 2-arylbenzoic acids has been developed. This operationally simple protocol allows rapid access to synthetically useful coumarins on gram scale by employing CeCl3 as a photocatalyst and O-2 as a terminal oxidant. Overall, this delivers an economical and environmentally amiable entry to diversely substituted coumarins, important structural motifs in bioactive molecules.

I found the field of Food Science & Technology very interesting. The current study evaluated the key characters of aroma composition in diversified red wines (Cinsaut, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Nielluccio, Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot and Caladoc). Out of hundreds of volatile compounds 64 compounds were considered for study. Different groups consisting of fatty acids, volatile alcohols, aldehydes, esters, volatile phenols and terpenes were analysed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry coupled with thermal desorption (TD-GC-MS). Among all these diversified classes, alcohols were found as the most dominant group followed by esters and acids whereas aldehydes, phenols and terpenes were found to be minor compounds. Among the varieties, Nielluccio wine recorded highest concentration of total volatile compounds (191.53 mg/L) while, it was least in Caladoc wines (15.45 mg/L). The principal component analysis clearly differentiated Grenache wines based on their relationships between scores and their aroma composition followed by Nielluccio and Cinsuat wines. Out of sixty four compounds, only six aromatic compounds viz. butanediol, isoamyl actate, gamma-Terpene, butanol, acetic acid and furfural have satisfying aroma descriptors with floral and fruity nuances and contribute to differentiate the Grenache wines from other varieties which have similar scores in PC1 analysis. The cluster analysis also suggested that the wines in the same group (Cinsaut, Tempranillo and Syrah), (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Caladoc and Merlot) and (Nielluccio and Petit Verdot) had similar aroma characterization. Grenache wines were well differentiated from the sub group formed by other red varieties.

An oxidative esterification of aldehydes with alkanols catalyzed by an in situ generated low-valent cobalt system has been developed using an enone as a mild oxidant. Mechanistic studies revealed that it proceeds through a Co(i)-catalyzed hydrogen-transfer route, wherein the -vinyl moiety in the bidentate enone functions as a hydride acceptor. Meanwhile, Co(i)-catalyzed formyl C-H activation occurred as a competing reaction leading to aldehyde dimerization. The occurrence of the usually kinetically disfavored hydride transfer step therein was significantly increased in the presence of an enone reacting as a hydride transfer initiator.

The condensation of MeP(SiMe3)(2) with a series of 5-substituted isophthaloyl chlorides (5-R’C6H3-2,6-{C(O)Cl}(2)) affords the diphosphametacyclophanes m-{-C(O)-C6H3-5-R’-(C(O)PMe)}(2) (R’ = I, Me, tBu, Ph, and p-NCC6H4); the analogues m-{-C(O)-C5H3N-(C(O)PMe)}(2) and m-{-C(O)-C6H4-(C(O)PPh)}(2) are similarly obtained in preference to higher oligomers, in contrast to precedent reports. The cyclophanes all adopt butterfly-like conformations in the solid state with the P-organyl substituents adopting mutually exo arrangements. Structural and computational data suggest the nature of the 5-R substituent is key in directing the inter-ring angle and the extent of LUMO stabilization about the diketophophanyl scaffold. The latter is substantiated by UV/vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry, which demonstrate these cyclophanes to be appreciably comparable to the diketophosphanyl systems commonly explored in the context of organic electronic materials; intriguingly, the distinct dikeophosphanyl moieties within the macrocycles appear effectively insulated by the macrocycle geometry, rather than acting as a through-conjugate.

Porous microspheres from discotic tripeptides have been investigated as potential candidates for drug delivery vehicles. The C-3 symmetric discotic tripeptide adopts a supramolecular helical column structure by three fold intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions as well as face to face pi-pi stacking interactions. But the C-2 symmetric discotic tripeptide adopts a supramolecular dimer like structure by six-fold intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions and face to face pi-pi stacking interactions. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) revealed that the C-3 symmetric discotic tripeptide exhibits bird nest-like porous microsphere morphology formed by the assembly of the individual columns. However the C-2 symmetric discotic tripeptide forms round clay pitcher like porous microspheres. These porous microspheres have been used as potential carriers for the sustained release of a bacteriostatic antibiotic sulfamethoxazole. The spectroscopic studies as well as the growth inhibition of E. coli reveal that the round clay pitcher-like porous microspheres are more efficient than the bird nest-like porous microspheres for the sustained release of drugs. The report highlights the importance of the self-assembly pattern for the fabrication of advanced functional materials.

The reactivity of ortho-functionalized N-heterocycle-substituted iodoarenes (NHIAs) as organocatalysts in iodine(I/III)-mediated oxidations was systematically investigated in the alpha-tosyloxylation of ketones as the model reaction. During a systematic catalyst evolution, it was found that NH-triazoles and benzoxazoles have the most significant positive influence on the reactivity of the central iodine atom. A further catalyst improvement which focused on the substitution pattern of the arene revealed a remarkable ortho-effect. By introduction of an o-OMe group we were able to generate a novel NHIA with a so far unseen catalytic efficiency. This new catalyst is not only easy to synthesize but also enabled the alpha-tosyloxylation of carbonyl compounds at the lowest reported catalyst loading of only 1 mol%. Finally, the performance of this iodine(I) catalyst was successfully demonstrated in intramolecular oxidative couplings of biphenyls and oxidative rearrangements.

The utility of thionoester as a 1,2-dipolarophile for [4+2] cycloaddition with cyclobutanones is described. The [4+2] cycloaddition reaction provided tetrahydrothiopyran, which is found in biologically active natural products, in high yield with high diastereoselectivity by using readily available TiCl4. This synthetic method was applicable to a wide range of thionoesters and cyclobutanones. The ketone and S,O-ketal functionalities of the product could be reduced with excellent diastereoselectivity. Furthermore, the C-O bond was transformed into a C-C bond, affording contiguous tetrasubstituted carbon centers.
