Comprehension in hemicellulose pyrolysis is critical to generate renewable fuel and valuable chemical. Herein, a self-designed tubular reactor was applied to observe the appearance alteration and chemical structure evolution during the whole xylan pyrolysis process. Before 200 degrees C, it was free moisture removal stage without significant chemical structure alteration. Xylan began to depolymerize at 200 degrees C corresponding with the appearance change from its original state to dark brown, cleavage of branched-chain and primary product acids & ketones generation. The main chain of xylan was completely broken at 250-350 degrees C via beta-1,4-glycosidic bond cleavage, dehydration, decarboxylation, and decarbonylation reaction. Acids were mainly originated from hemicellulose pyrolysis. The typical signals from FTIR,C-13 CP/MAS NMR were disappeared at 350 degrees C. In the carbonation stage, the C/H and C/O ratio reached 2.01 and 4.54, leading to the aromaticity enhancement of char and formation of carbon-centered radicals.

Conventional methods to improve the flame retardancy of polymeric materials usually involve the use of flame-retardant elements such as Cl, Br and P, however, their use may bring more smoke and toxic gases hazards, and more importantly, cause non-negligible environmental and ecological problems. In this work, we put forward a novel green strategy that eliminates the use of any conventional flame-retardant elements to improve the flame retardancy by incorporating a synergistically cross-linkable structure (named PN) containing phenylacetylene and phenylimide groups. The resulting PN copolymer exhibited an excellent 55% lower smoke release rate and 68% lower heat release rate than the pure polymer, as well as a high LOI value of 32% and UL-94 V-0 rating with excellent anti-dripping performance. TG-DSC, rheological and FTIR results proved the high cross-linking ability of the PN copolymer due to the synergistic cross-linking effect between the imide-isoimide rearrangement of phenylimide and the self-cross-linking of phenylacetylene. The SEM, Raman and Py-GC/MS results further upheld the condensed phase flame-retardant mechanism. This eco-friendly synergistic cross-linking strategy provided new perspective for the design and synthesis of polymeric materials with excellent flame retardancy, great anti-dripping performance, and low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gas.

A novel robust diphosphine-ruthenium(ii) complex has been developed that can efficiently catalyze both the hydrogenation of CO(2)to methanol and itsin situcondensation with carboxylic acids to form methyl esters; a TON of up to 3260 is achievable for the CO(2)to methanol step. Both aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids can be transformed to their corresponding methyl esters with high conversion and selectivity (17 aliphatic and 18 aromatic examples). On the basis of a series of experiments, a mechanism has been proposed to account for the various steps involved in the catalytic pathway. More importantly, this approach provides a promising route for using CO(2)as a C1 source for the production of biofuels, fine chemicals and methanol.

The aim of this work was to undertake a detailed analysis on chemical constituents of brown propolis, originating from four different states (Bahia, Minas Gerais, Parana and Sergipe) of Brazil. The volatile profile was determined by using HS-SPME-GC-MS along with the determination of total phenolic compounds content, flavonoids and antioxidant activity. A total of 315 volatile compounds were identified, however, several of them have not been reported so far in the Brazilian brown propolis. The terpenes represented the major class with 40.92-84.66% of the total area in the chromatograms. PCA analysis of the majority of compounds successfully indicated the volatile profile of each propolis sample according to their geographical origin. The analysis of volatile compounds and its characterization also varied significantly and confirmed that these depended on the geographical area of collection of propolis. The data generated in this work may help in establishing criteria for quality control and tracking the specific region of propolis production in different states of Brazil.

Catalytic reduction of carboxamides into their corresponding amines is an attractive but extremely challenging transformation, which often meets with limited success; the valuable amine products drive ongoing research in this area. Here we show the direct deoxygenation of carboxamides using earth-abundant lanthanum catalysts in the presence of HBpin, presenting good to excellent yields with broad substrate scope and functional group/heteroatom tolerance. Moreover, this method is also effective in catalysing the hydroboration of esters. Finally, selective cleavage of the amide group bonds (C-N versus C-O) could be achieved based on the nature of the nitrogen substituents. Amide reduction via hydroboration is challenging, and catalysts often exhibit limited substrate scope. Here the authors report synthesis of a lanthanum cluster as a catalyst for the hydroboration of esters and amides, capable of reducing a wide range of primary, secondary and tertiary amides to amines.

This report describes the synthesis of five new colorful 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts, a largely unexplored structural unit. These rare compounds are benzannulated structural derivatives of the well-known flavylium cations found widespread in natural pigments. These new dyes are directly compared to three previously synthesized 6-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation salts as well as eight colorful isomeric 9-aryldibenzo[b,d]pyrylium cation, or 9-arylxanthylium, salts. The 9-arylxanthylium unit is commonly found in the biologically important rhodamine and rosamine dyes, yet six of the analogs presented in this study were either previously unreported or not isolated. The visual and spectroscopic properties of all 16 compounds were analyzed as a function of the structural differences between the compounds. All compounds displayed reversible halochromism in organic solution, displaying bright colors under acidic conditions and becoming colorless under basic conditions. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Development of organic nanoparticles with high fluorescence, good biocompatibility along with strong resistance to photobleaching through simple synthetic routes is important for diverse applications such as sensing and bioimaging. Herein, we present the development of a pyrene excimer nanoaggregate which shows aggregation induced emission (AIE) effect in a solvent mixture of THE and water. The pyrene based fluorescent probe, dimethyl-5-(pyren-1-ylmethyleneamino)isophthalate (5-DP) was synthesized through a simple single step condensation reaction from inexpensive reagents. The photophysical studies of nanoaggregated system further corroborates the AIE active behavior of 5-DP probe at different water fractions (f(w) = 0% to 90%), where the hydrogen bonding interaction between imine and water molecules led to suppression of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) inducing significant enhancement in fluorescence. The highly photostable nanoaggregates were explored as a selective fluorescence turn off sensor for phenolic nitroaromatics and the chemo-selectivity was highly pronounced for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid), that showed efficient quenching in aqueous as well as solid phase, with a detection limit of 10 nM in aqueous medium. The quenching efficiency of the nanoaggregates can be ascribed to a combination of factors including efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer, inner filter effect and coulombic interaction between picric acid and the aggregated probe molecules. Further, random aggregation of the pyrene derivative could be controlled for the formation of fluorescent spherical nanoparticles using Pluoronics P-123 block copolymers as encapsulating agents. The resulting composite could be used as a neoteric cell imaging probe with significantly less cytotoxicity, thus showing their potential biological applications.

By employing an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyst, we developed a versatile catalytic system that enables deaminative cross-coupling reactions of aldehydes with redox-active pyridinium salts. Katritzky pyridinium salts behave as single-electron oxidants capable of generating alkyl radicals enabled by the redox properties of the enolate form of Breslow intermediates. The resultant alkyl radical undergoes efficient recombination with the NHC-bound aldehyde-derived carbonyl carbon radical for the formation of a C-C bond. The mild and transition metal-free reaction conditions tolerate a broad range of functional groups, and its utility has been further demonstrated by the modification of a series of peptide feedstocks and application to the three-component dicarbofunctionalization of olefins.

Development of a facile and greener approach for Heck reaction using a modified PAN supported palladium catalyst is described. The preparation of the catalyst involves a simple process through amidoxime modification of nitrile group in Polyacrylonitrile (PAN), followed by the complexation with Palladium chloride (PdCl2). The resulting supported catalyst was characterized by spectroscopic analyses and further by computational studies. This polymer supported Palladium complex displayed excellent catalytic activity in Heck coupling reaction of a series of activated alkenes and aryl halides and afforded the corresponding coupling products upto 96% isolated yield. After the reaction, the catalyst was easily recovered by simple filtration and recycled with excellent stability and activity even after 5 runs. This is the first report on the use of amidoxime functionalized PAN-Palladium (II) complex as a heterogeneous catalyst in Heck coupling reaction.
