Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is typically assumed to be the primary reactive species in free available chlorine (FAC) solutions. Lately, it has been shown that less abundant chlorine species such as chlorine monoxide (Cl2O) and chlorine (Cl-2) can also influence the kinetics of the abatement of certain organic compounds during chlorination. In this study, the chlorination as well as bromination kinetics and mechanisms of 12 olefins (including 3 aliphatic and 9 aromatic olefins) with different structures were explored. HOCl shows a low reactivity towards the selected olefins with species-specific second-order rate constants < 1.0 M(-1)s(-1), about 4-6 orders of magnitude lower than those of Cl2O and Cl-2. HOCl is the dominant chlorine species during chlorination of olefins under typical drinking water conditions, while Cl2O and Cl-2 are likely to play important roles at high FAC concentration near circum-neutral pH (for Cl2O) or at high Cl- concentration under acidic conditions (for Cl-2). Bromination of the 12 olefins suggests that HOBr and Br2O are the major reactive species at pH 7.5 with species-specific second-order rate constants of Br2O nearly 3-4 orders of magnitude higher than of HOBr (ranging from 0.01 to 10 3 M(-1)s(-1)). The reactivities of chlorine and bromine species towards olefins follow the order of HOCl < HOBr < Br2O < Cl2O approximate to Cl-2. Generally, electron-donating groups (e.g., CH2OH and CH3-) enhances the reactivities of olefins towards chlorine and bromine species by a factor of 3-10(2) , while electron- withdrawing groups (e.g., Cl-, Br-, NO2-, COOH-, CHO-,-COOR, and CN-) reduce the reactivities by a factor of 3-10(4). A reasonable linear free energy relationship (LFER) between the species-specific second-order rate constants of Br2O or Cl2O reactions with aromatic olefins and their Hammett sigma(+) was established with a more negative rho value for Br2O than for Cl2O, indicating that Br2O is more sensitive to substitution effects. Chlorinated products including HOCl-adducts and decarboxylated Cl-adduct were identified during chlorination of cinnamic acid by high-performance liquid chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC/HRMS). Herein we report the photo- and electrochemical characterization of pyrimidopteridine N-oxide-based heterocycles. The potential of their application as organic photoredox catalysts is showcased in the photomediated contra-thermodynamic E -> Z isomerization of cinnamic acid derivatives and oxidative cyclization of 2-phenyl benzoic acid to benzocoumarin using molecular oxygen as a mild oxidant. In the presented work, five bio-based and bio-degradable cyclic esters, i.e. lactones, have been investigated as possible phase change materials for applications in latent heat storage systems. Commercial natural lactones such as epsilon-caprolactone and gamma-valerolactone were easily purchased through chemical suppliers, while 1,2-campholide, oxa-adamantanone and dibenzochromen-6-one were synthesized through Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The compounds were characterized with respect to attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy, in order to confirm their chemical structures and identity. Subsequently, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to measure the phase change temperatures, enthalpies of fusion, degradation temperatures, as well to estimate the degree of supercooling. The lactones showed a wide range of phase change temperatures from -40 degrees C to 290 degrees C, making them a high interest for both low and high temperature latent heat storage applications, given the lack of organic phase change materials covering phase change temperature ranges below 0 degrees C and above 80 degrees C. However, low enthalpies of fusion, high degrees of supercooling and thermal degradations at low temperatures were registered for all samples, rendering them unsuitable as phase change materials.

Objectives: The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in infective endocarditis (IE), its risk factors and consequences on patient and renal survival remain debated. Methods: Patients hospitalized for a first episode of IE (possible or definite according to modified Duke criteria) between 2013 and 2016 were included. The primary endpoint was to determine risk factors for early AKI (E-AKI) during the first week of management of IE. Results: A total of 276 patients were included: 220 (79.7%) had definite IE and 56 (20.3%) had possible IE. E-AKI occurred in 150 patients (53%). IE due to Staphylococcus aureus (OR 3.41; 95% CI 1.83-6.39; p < 0.01), history of diabetes (OR 2.34; 95% CI 1.25-4.37; p < 0.01), peripheral arterial disease (OR 2.59; 95% CI 1.07-6.23; p < 0.05), immunological manifestations (OR 3.11; 95% CI 1.31-7.39; p = 0.01), and use of norepinephrine (OR 3.44; 95% CI 1.72-7.02; p < 0.01) were associated with E-AKI. In subgroup analysis, infectious disease consultation was associated with a lower risk of AKI at day 7 (OR 0.41; 95% CI 0.16-0.88; p = 0.04). E-AKI was associated with 1-year mortality (OR 1.65; 95% CI 1.03-2.64; p = 0.04) and chronic kidney disease progression (OR 2.23; 95% CI 1.30-3.82; p < 0.01). Conclusions: E-AKI is common in IE and often associated with non-modifiable variables. By using the reduced Schiff base tricarboxylate ligand H(3)cip, one novel 3D Cd-based coordination polymer (Cd-CP) with the formula [Cd(Hcip)(bpea)(0.5)(H2O)](n) (H(3)cip = 5-(3-carboxybenzylamino)isophthalic acid, bpea = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) has been solvothermally synthesized. The prepared Cd-CP possesses a 4-connected CdSO4 net based on dinuclear {Cd-2} units. Luminescence measurements revealed that the complex exhibited ratiometric turn-on luminescence responses toward Al3+ and Cr3+ with a significant color change, which could be easily distinguished by the naked eye under ultraviolet light. Cd-CP can also respond to Fe3+ through a turn-off mechanism. Interestingly, the luminescence quenched by Fe3+@Cd-CP can be recovered and increased significantly by adding some competitive Al3+, while Cr3+ can only marginally increase the luminescence intensity of Fe3+@Cd-CP. Moreover, the detection of the three aforementioned metal ions can be realized by using Cd-CP-coated test papers, extending the potential application regions of the reported material to point-of-care tests and environmental field studies.

Guillermo Calleja and co-workers from @urjc describe URJC-1-MOF as a new heterogeneous recyclable catalyst for c-heteroatom coupling reactions The capacity of copper-based URJC-1-MOF as a MOF catalyst in cross-coupling reactions has been evaluated, focusing on the Chan-Lam-Evans arylation-type reactions on amines and alcohols without extra additives or ligands. The extraordinary chemical and structural stability of URJC-1-MOF and its good specific surface, make this material a promising alternative to homogeneous Cu (II) catalysts for cross-coupling reactions. URJC-1-MOF showed a remarkable catalytic activity for cross-coupling C-N and C-O reactions, higher than other heterogeneous and homogeneous copper-based catalyst, such as CuO, HKUST-1, Cu-MOF-74, Cu(OAc)(2) and CuSO4.5H(2)O. Moreover, its easy recovery by simple filtration and reusability in successive runs without any loss of activity and stability, demonstrates the potential of URJC-1-MOF as an alternative catalyst for this kind of reactions in different chemical media of industrial interest.

In this study, the unique capacity of bifunctional BrOnsted bases to generate alpha-branched ketone dienolates and control both site- and stereoselectivity of their addition reactions to representative classes of carbon electrophiles (i.e., vinyl sulfones, nitroolefins, formaldehyde) is documented. We demonstrate that by using selected chiral tertiary amine/squaramide catalysts, the reactions of beta,gamma-unsaturated cycloalkanones proceed through the dienolate C alpha almost exclusively and provide all-carbon quaternary cyclic ketone adducts in good yields with very high enantioselectivities. A minor amount (<5%) of gamma-addition is observed when nitroolefins are used as electrophiles. The parent acyclic ketone dienolates proved to be less reactive under these conditions, and thus still constitute a challenging class of substrates. In this work, we demonstrate the synthesis and viability of a new class of planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophane-based bisoxazoline (BOX) ligands for the copper-catalyzed N-H insertion of alpha -diazocarbonyls into anilines. The reaction features a wide substrate scope and moderate to excellent yields, and delivers the valuable products at ambient conditions.
