Amino acid derivatives undergo non-Kolbe electrolysis to afford enantiomerically enriched alpha-alkoxyamino derivatives through intermediate chiral carbenium ions. The products contain N,O-acetals which are important structural motifs found in bioactive natural products. The reaction is performed in a continuous flow electrochemical reactor coupled to a 2D-HPLC for immediate online analysis. This allowed a fast screening of temperature, electrode material, current, flow-rate and concentration in a DoE approach. The combination with online HPLC demonstrates that also stereoselective reactions can benefit from a hugely accelerated optimisation by combining flow electrochemistry with multidimensional analysis.

The Ginkgo biloba metabolite bilobalide is widely ingested by humans but its effect on the mammalian central nervous system is not fully understood(1-4). Antagonism of gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptors (GABA(A)Rs) by bilobalide has been linked to the rescue of cognitive deficits in mouse models of Down syndrome(5). A lack of convulsant activity coupled with neuroprotective effects have led some to postulate an alternative, unidentified target(4); however, steric congestion and the instability of bilobalide(1,2,6) have prevented pull-down of biological targets other than the GABA(A)Rs. A concise and flexible synthesis of bilobalide would facilitate the development of probes for the identification of potential new targets, analogues with differential selectivity between insect and human GABA(A)Rs, and stabilized analogues with an enhanced serum half-life(7). Here we exploit the unusual reactivity of bilobalide to enable a late-stage deep oxidation that symmetrizes the molecular core and enables oxidation states to be embedded in the starting materials. The same overall strategy may be applicable to G. biloba congeners, including the ginkgolides-some of which are glycine-receptor-selective antagonists(8). A chemical synthesis of bilobalide should facilitate the investigation of its biological effects and its therapeutic potential.

Comprehension in hemicellulose pyrolysis is critical to generate renewable fuel and valuable chemical. Herein, a self-designed tubular reactor was applied to observe the appearance alteration and chemical structure evolution during the whole xylan pyrolysis process. Before 200 degrees C, it was free moisture removal stage without significant chemical structure alteration. Xylan began to depolymerize at 200 degrees C corresponding with the appearance change from its original state to dark brown, cleavage of branched-chain and primary product acids & ketones generation. The main chain of xylan was completely broken at 250-350 degrees C via beta-1,4-glycosidic bond cleavage, dehydration, decarboxylation, and decarbonylation reaction. Acids were mainly originated from hemicellulose pyrolysis. The typical signals from FTIR,C-13 CP/MAS NMR were disappeared at 350 degrees C. In the carbonation stage, the C/H and C/O ratio reached 2.01 and 4.54, leading to the aromaticity enhancement of char and formation of carbon-centered radicals.

A mild and efficient protocol for the intramolecular aromatic C-H oxygenation of 2-biphenylcarboxylic acids has been achieved via iron photocatalysis. The 2-biphenylcarboxylic acids with a diverse array of substituents at both phenyl rings could furnish the oxygenation products in good to excellent yields. A Cd(II)-based metal-organic framework as fluorescent chemical sensor, formulated as {[Cd-3(bmipia)(2)]center dot 10DMF center dot 5H(2)O}(n) (FCS-2), was synthesized through a hydrothermal process and structurally characterized via X-ray crystallography. FCS-2 represented a new three-dimensional framework assembled from a semi -rigid aromatic carboxylate ligand and exhibited fascinating fluorescence due to the highly crystalline and ordered molecular structure. Abundant aromatic carboxylic acids exist in great structural diversity from nature and synthesis. To date, the synthetically valuable decarboxylative functionalization of benzoic acids is realized mainly by transition-metal-catalyzed decarboxylative cross couplings. However, the high activation barrier for thermal decarboxylative carbometalation that often requires 140 degrees C reaction temperature limits both the substrate scope as well as the scope of suitable reactions that can sustain such conditions. Numerous reactions, for example, decarboxylative fluorination that is well developed for aliphatic carboxylic acids, are out of reach for the aromatic counterparts with current reaction chemistry. Here, we report a conceptually different approach through a low-barrier photoinduced ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT)-enabled radical decarboxylative carbometalation strategy, which generates a putative high-valent arylcopper(III) complex, from which versatile facile reductive eliminations can occur. We demonstrate the suitability of our new approach to address previously unrealized general decarboxylative fluorination of benzoic acids.

Herbs market is constantly growing worldwide, and is trying to find new species and varieties coming from specific geographical regions. While the increasing production demands novel solutions for product preservation, consumers demand guaranteed quality for these products. In case of herbs, the most common preservation method is thermo-based process – drying, which strongly affects products quality. Regarding the technological possibilities and efficiency, convective drying (CD), microwave drying, vacuum-microwave drying (VMD) and combined convective pre-drying followed by vacuum-microwave finish-drying (CPD-VMFD) methods are the most popular ones. In this study, the influence of the drying methods (CD, VMD and CPD-VMD) on Thai basil (O. basilicum var. thyrsiflora) quality was evaluated for the very first time. The chemical composition of their essential oils (EOs), dried samples (aroma profiles, APs) and sensory quality of the dried products were also studied. As a result of multiple chemical and sensory analyses and after cross-checking all these results, guidelines for chemical markers of Thai basil aroma quality were established. Odour-active compounds (OACs) contribution in Thai basil EOs did not show a clear pattern to link it with quality assessments; however, OACs contribution in APs did. The drying treatments leading to the dried products with the highest quality were: (i) 2 h CPD at 50 degrees C followed by VMFD with 360 W (2 h CPD50) and (ii) 1 h CPD at 70 degrees C followed by VMFD with 360 W (1 h CPD70).

Herein, two novel isostructural metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) M-URJC-4 (M = Co, Ni; URJC = Universidad Rey Juan Carlos) with open metal sites, permanent microposity, and large surface areas and pore volumes have been developed. These novel MOFs, with polyhedral morphology, crystallize in the monoclinic P2(1)/c space group, exhibiting a three-dimensional structure with microporous channels along the c axis. Initially, they were fully characterized and tested in hydrogen (H-2) adsorption at different conditions of temperature and pressure. The physisorption capacities of both materials surpassed the gravimetric H-2 uptake shown by most MOF materials under the same conditions. On the basis of the outstanding adsorption properties, the Ni-URJC-4 material was used as a catalyst in a one-pot reductive amination reaction using various carbonyl compounds and primary amines. A possible chemical pathway to obtain secondary amines was proposed via imine formation, and remarkable performances were accomplished. This work evidences the dual ability of M-URJC-4 materials to be used as a H-2 adsorbent and a catalyst in reductive amination reactions, activating molecular H-2 at low pressures for the reduction of C=N double bonds and providing reference structural features for the design of new versatile heterogeneous materials for industrial application.
