Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) worsens cardiovascular (CV) outcomes of heart failure (HF) and vice versa. The impact of rate or rhythm control strategies on HF progression and survival remains unclear. Methods We examined the risk of HF progression in AF patients (pts) with a prior HF event and minimal or no HF burden (NYHA class 0 or 1). They were stratified into HF with a preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (>= 40%, pEF) or reduced EF (< 40%, rEF). HF subgroups from the Rate and Rhythm arm were compared for the primary outcome of worsening HF or death (WHFD), total mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and cardiovascular hospitalizations. Results Four hundred ninety-two AF pts (HFpEF = 349, HFrEF = 143) were analyzed. Baseline characteristics were generally comparable in the Rate and Rhythm arms of the two subgroups. Over a median follow-up of 4 years, HF recurred and worsened in 66.6% and 41.2% of pts by >= 1 and >= 2 NYHA classes, respectively. HF progression by even 1 NYHA class increased the mortality risk in HFpEF (hazard ratio (HR) 2.06; 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.25-3.4; p = 0.004) and HFrEF (HR 1.9; 95% CI 0.99-3.66; p = 0.054). Cardiovascular hospitalization (CVH) increased in HFpEF (HR 3.67; 95% CI 2.56, 5.25; p < 0.0001) and HFrEF (HR 2.8; 95% CI 1.53-5.14; p = 0.0009). HF progression by 2 or more NYHA classes or death was significantly worse in pts with HFrEF with the Rate control strategy compared with the Rhythm control (HR 1.62; 95% CI 1.03-2.53; p = 0.036) but similar in pts with HFpEF (HR 0.88; 95% CI 0.64-1.21; p = 0.440).The time to first AF recurrence was longer in the Rhythm arms of both HF subgroups as compared with Rate (Figure, p < 0.05). Conclusions (1) HF progression in AF pts with a prior HF event confers significant mortality and CVH risk in both HFrEF and HFpEF populations. (2) HF progression is more pronounced with a Rate control strategy in AF pts with HFrEF, but is comparable to Rhythm control in AF pts with HFpEF. (3) A Rhythm control strategy may be desirable to reduce HF progression in pts with HFrEF and AF. Prospective clinical trials appear warranted to examine HF progression by treatment strategy in HFpEF and HFrEF populations with AF. Regioselectivity for intramolecular Diels-Alder (IMDA) reactions of 6-acetoxy-6-alkenylcyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-ones that were formed by oxidation of 2-alkenylphenols with lead tetraacetate in acetic acid were studied. Bridged regioselectivity was observed in the IMDA reactions of 6-acetoxy-6-alkenylcyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-ones having a dienophile part which could conjugate with an aromatic group. Bridged seven-and eight-membered rings and bicyclo[2.2.2]octane skeletons were constructed by the present IMDA reactions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that conjugation of the dienophile with neighboring aromatic groups lowered the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energy gap and preceded bridged [4 + 2] adducts.

The American Matsutake, Tricholoma magnivelare (Peck) Redhead, is an edible wild mushroom with a distinctive aroma described as mushroom and spice with subtle floral and citrus nuances. In this study, a total of 36 odorants were identified from T. magnivelare using solvent-assisted flavor evaporation and aroma extract dilution analysis. Stable isotope dilution assays were performed to quantitate 14 odorants with flavor dilution factors >= 64. Odorants with high odor activity values (OAVs) included 1-octen-3-one (OAV 2125), linalool (OAV 650), (2E,4E)-nona-2,4-dienal (OAV 304), and 1-octen-3-ol (OAV 206). An odor simulation model matched the odor profile of the fresh mushroom. Omission studies showed that linalool, hexanal, (2E,4E)-nona2,4-dienal, methyl (E)-3-phenylprop-2-enoate, and 1-octen-3-one or 1-octen-3-ol were essential to the aroma of T. magnivelare. Chiral chromatography showed that a-pinene was a scalemic mixture of 34% (R)-(+) to 66% (S)-(-), while 1-octen-3-ol was present as 95% (R)-(-) to 5% (S)-(+), and linalool was 96% (R)-(-) to 4% (S)-(+). These results establish the base for future investigations into the aroma chemistry of other members of the genus Tricholoma.

The idea of using biaryl structures to generate synthetic building blocks such as spirolactones is attractive because biaryl structures are abundant in biomass waste streams. However, the inertness of aromatic rings of biaryls makes it challenging to transform them into functionalized structures. In this work, we developed photoinduced dearomatization of nonphenolic biaryl compounds to generate spirolactones. We demonstrate that dearomatization can be performed via either aerobic photocatalysis or anaerobic photooxidation to tolerate specific synthetic conditions. In both pathways, dearomatization is induced by electrophilic attack of the carboxyl radical. The resulting spirodiene radical is captured by either oxygen or water in aerobic and anaerobic systems, respectively, to generate the spirodienone. These methods represent novel routes to synthesize spirolactones from the biaryl motif.

Lipid migration is widespread in food system and has an important effect on food quality. It is urgent to explore the lipid migration in egg yolk after heating. The content of lipids in upper part (HL) was higher than that in bottom part (LL), and the lipids migration in yolk gel under heating were confirmed by MRI (T1) and T2 relaxation time of LF-NMR. Subsequently, the XDR result demonstrated the high lipid content induced the decrease in crystallinity of protein in HL part. The structures of HL part trend to be more ordered, stable (beta-sheet & beta-turns) and flat (alpha-helices) than LL part, also, more water distributed in LL part were observed by FTIR spectrum. The SEM results revealed that lipids migrated from LL to HL part, eventually lead to the protein in HL part of heated yolk gel unfold, the globular structure collapsed and become flatter. Morever, ethyl acetate, hexanal, etc. and hexanal, ethyl acetate, dimethyl-silanediol, etc. were identified as the main VOCs of LL and HL part of heated yolk gel, respectively. Lipid migration result in more lipid-specific volatiles were formed in the HL part, such as hexanal, 3-hydroxy-cyclohexanone, 2-pentyl-furan, D-limonene, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, benzeneacetaldehyde. Lipid migration in heated yolk gel, caused by heat treatment, resulted in the changes of structure and flavor between HL and LL part.

A series of palladium(H) complexes incorporating l-substituted-3-methyl-3-phospholenes as the P-ligands were prepared from phospholene oxides by deoxygenation followed by complexation with PdCl2(PhCN)(2). The two 1-substituted-3-methyl-3-phospholene ligands were trans position to each other in the Pd(II)-complexes. As the ligands contain a P-stereogenic center, the Pd-complexes were obtained as a 1:1 mixture of two stereoisomers, the homochiral (R,R and S,S) and the meso (R,S) forms, when racemic starting materials were used. An optically active Pd-complex containing (R)-1-propyl-3-phospholene ligand was also prepared. Catalytic activity of an aryl- and an alkyl-3-phospholene-palladium(II)-complex was evaluated in hydroalkoxycarbonylation of styrene. The alkyl-derivative showed higher activity and selectivity towards the formation of the esters of 3-phenylpropionic acid. However, the overall activity of these PdCl2(phospholene)(2)-type complexes was low.

The presence of different aldehydes is found to have a significant influence on the catalytic performance when using PN(H)P type ligands for dehydrogenation of alcohols. Accordingly, hybrid multi-dentate ligands were discovered based on an oxygen-transfer alkylation of PNP ligands by aldehydes. The relevant Ru-PNN(PO) system provided the desired unsymmetrical esters in good yields via acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols. Hydrogen bonding interactions between the phosphine oxide moieties and alcohol substrates likely assisted the observed high chemoselectivity.

Bis-N-heterocycle-stabilized lambda(3)-iodanes (BNHIs) based on azoles are introduced as novel structural motifs in hypervalent iodine chemistry. A performance test in a variety of benchmark reactions including sulfoxidations and phenol dearomatizations revealed a bis-N-bound pyrazole substituted BNHI as the most reactive derivative. A manganese-catalyzed oxidative kinetic resolution of cyclic benzylic ethers through asymmetric C(sp(3))-H oxidation is reported. The practical approach is applicable to a wide range of 1,3-dihydroisobenzofurans bearing diverse functional groups and substituent patterns at the alpha position with extremely efficient enantiodiscrimination. The generality of the strategy was further demonstrated by efficient oxidative kinetic resolution of another type of five-membered cyclic benzylic ether, 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans, and six-membered 6H-benzo[c]chromenes. Direct late-stage oxidative kinetic resolution of bioactive molecules that are otherwise difficult to access was further explored.
