Catalytic conversion of lignin to versatile aromatic compounds is attracting increasing attention. However, it is highly desirable but challenging to produce a specific chemical with high yield through lignin depolymerization in a one-pot process because of the complex structure of the lignin molecule (mainly composed of H, G, and S units). In this study, a series of metal-based deep eutectic solvents (M-DESs) were prepared and used for the catalytic tailoring of lignin H units to produce value-added methyl p-hydroxycinnamate (MPC). In particular, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) showed excellent catalytic performance for the selective production of MPC as the sole product with high yield and selectivity (105.8 mg g(-1) and 74.1%, respectively). Extensive characterizations using 2D HSQC NMR, C-13 NMR, and GPC demonstrated that MPC was obtained from the selective tailoring of p-coumaric acid (pCA) units via the cleavage of ester bonds in lignin. Furthermore, M-DES ChCl[FeCl3](2) also exhibited efficiency to other herbaceous lignins, and showed excellent recyclability. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy for the valorization of lignin.

In this study, the unique capacity of bifunctional BrOnsted bases to generate alpha-branched ketone dienolates and control both site- and stereoselectivity of their addition reactions to representative classes of carbon electrophiles (i.e., vinyl sulfones, nitroolefins, formaldehyde) is documented. We demonstrate that by using selected chiral tertiary amine/squaramide catalysts, the reactions of beta,gamma-unsaturated cycloalkanones proceed through the dienolate C alpha almost exclusively and provide all-carbon quaternary cyclic ketone adducts in good yields with very high enantioselectivities. A minor amount (<5%) of gamma-addition is observed when nitroolefins are used as electrophiles. The parent acyclic ketone dienolates proved to be less reactive under these conditions, and thus still constitute a challenging class of substrates. Quantum chemical calculations correctly predict these differences in reactivity and explain the observed site-specificity and enantioselectivity. Recommanded Product: Dimethyl 5-aminoisophthalate. Solid acid catalysts are environmentally friendly alternatives to the use of mineral acids in a range of applications, including the esterification of carboxylic acids. Here, a phosphorus- and nitrogen-doped, carbon-modified, fully heterogeneous solid acid catalyst was prepared by pyrolysis of a mixture of melamine and tungstophosphoric acid at 250, 500, and 750 degrees C under a nitrogen atmosphere provided. The structure of the different catalysts was evaluated by surface area measurements, XRD, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and electron microscopies. Pyrolysis at 500 degrees C created complex solid materials with larger surface area and significantly higher acidity, which can be attributed to WO3 formation on a heteroatomic (N,P)-carbon structure. The 500 degrees C-treated heterogeneous catalysts showed remarkably better activity for esterification of palmitic acid and were thus applied in the esterification of a broad range of carboxylic acids with good overall yields. Furthermore, the solid acid catalyst can be easily recovered and recycled up to eight times without significant loss of activity with no leaching of species to the reaction mixture.

Herein we report the synthesis of substituted indolizidines and related N-fused bicycles from simple saturated cyclic amines through sequential C-H and C-C bond functionalizations. Inspired by the Norrish-Yang Type II reaction, C-H functionalization of azacycles is achieved by forming alpha-hydroxy-beta-lactams from precursor alpha-ketoamide derivatives under mild, visible light conditions. Selective cleavage of the distal C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) bond in alpha-hydroxy-beta-lactams using a Rh-complex leads to alpha-acyl intermediates which undergo sequential Rh-catalyzed decarbonylation, 1,4-addition to an electrophile, and aldol cyclization, to afford N-fused bicycles including indolizidines. Computational studies provide mechanistic insight into the observed positional selectivity of C-C cleavage, which depends strongly on the groups bound to Rh trans to the phosphine ligand.

The Ginkgo biloba metabolite bilobalide is widely ingested by humans but its effect on the mammalian central nervous system is not fully understood(1-4). Antagonism of gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptors (GABA(A)Rs) by bilobalide has been linked to the rescue of cognitive deficits in mouse models of Down syndrome(5). A lack of convulsant activity coupled with neuroprotective effects have led some to postulate an alternative, unidentified target(4); however, steric congestion and the instability of bilobalide(1,2,6) have prevented pull-down of biological targets other than the GABA(A)Rs. A concise and flexible synthesis of bilobalide would facilitate the development of probes for the identification of potential new targets, analogues with differential selectivity between insect and human GABA(A)Rs, and stabilized analogues with an enhanced serum half-life(7). Here we exploit the unusual reactivity of bilobalide to enable a late-stage deep oxidation that symmetrizes the molecular core and enables oxidation states to be embedded in the starting materials. The same overall strategy may be applicable to G. biloba congeners, including the ginkgolides-some of which are glycine-receptor-selective antagonists(8). A chemical synthesis of bilobalide should facilitate the investigation of its biological effects and its therapeutic potential.

The antigen-antibody interaction determines the sensitivity and specificity of competitive immunoassay for hapten detection. In this paper, the specificity of a monoclonal antibody against alternariol-like compounds was evaluated through indirect competitive ELISA. The results showed that the antibody had cross-reactivity with 33 compounds with the binding affinity (expressed by IC50) ranging from 9.4 ng/mL to 12.0 mu g/mL. All the 33 compounds contained a common moiety and similar substituents. To understand how this common moiety and substituents affected the recognition ability of the antibody, a three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) between the antibody and the 33 alternariol-like compounds was constructed using comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) methods. The q(2) values of the CoMFA and CoMSIA models were 0.785 and 0.782, respectively, and the r(2) values were 0.911 and 0.988, respectively, indicating that the models had good predictive ability. The results of 3D-QSAR showed that the most important factor affecting antibody recognition was the hydrogen bond mainly formed by the hydroxyl group of alternariol, followed by the hydrophobic force mainly formed by the methyl group. This study provides a reference for the design of new hapten and the mechanisms for antibody recognition.

We report a robust and rigid etb-type metal-organic framework, in which its pore surface is decorated with flexible ethoxyl groups. Disubstituted pendant-functionalized block copolymer consisting of insulating polynorbornene and conductive polyacetylene segments was synthesized by tandem metathesis polymerization, and displayed high dielectric constant of 30 and low dielectric loss of about 0.04, while behaved bad film-forming property, which could be improved by incorporating polycyclooctene into polynorbomene backbone. The generated flexible block copolymer with well-defined nanostructure exhibited a relatively high dielectric constant of 23, very low dielectric loss of below 0.0035, and high stored and released energy densities up to 4.52 and 4.02 J cm(-3) at the electric field of 165 MV m(-1),respectively, accompanied with the charge-discharge efficiency of 90%. The enhanced dielectric and energy storage capability were attributed to high permanent dipole moment and the interfacial polarization derived from the unique nanomorphology of block copolymer.
