Catalytic hydrogenation of olefins using noble metal catalysts or pyrophoric RANEY (R) nickel is of high importance in the chemical industry. From the point of view of green and sustainable chemistry, design and development of Earth-abundant, less toxic, and more environmentally friendly catalysts are highly desirable. Herein, we report the convenient preparation of active cobalt catalysts and their application in hydrogenations of a wide range of terminal and internal carbon-carbon double bonds in water under mild conditions. Catalysts are prepared on multi-gram scale by pyrolysis of cobalt acetate and uracil, guanine, adenine or l-tryptophan. The most active material Co-Ura/C-600 showed good productivity in industrially relevant hydrogenation of diisobutene to isooctane and in natural oil hardening.

Direct selective oxidative esterification of readily available alcohols under mild conditions is an attractive approach to synthesis valuable esters. Developing high performance catalyst is the key factor to the efficient esters synthesis. We report graphene supported Au-Pd alloy catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance in the synthesis of methyl benzoate from benzyl alcohol and methanol, a turnover frequency (TOF) of 230 h(-1) and selectivity of 100% to methyl benzoate were achieved under 1 atm O-2 at 25 degrees C, which is superior to the majority of the state-of-the-art catalysts. Experimentally observed volcano-like reactivity trends and DFT calculations prove the outstanding performance was mainly ascribed to unique electronic structures of AuPd alloy catalyst for the adsorption and activation of reactant molecules. The catalytic reaction mechanism for interpretation of the structure-activity relationships of various catalysts at molecular level was investigated. The present study could help to unravel the synergistic effect of Au-Pd catalyst and provides a mild and efficient route for synthesis high-value esters in terms of green and sustainable chemistry.

Nanosized structural defects in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) attract growing attention and often remarkably enhance functional properties of these materials for various applications. In this work, a series of MOFs [Cu-2(TPTA)(1-x)(BDPBTR)(x)] (H(4)TPTA, [1,1′:3′,1 ”-terphenyl]-3,3 ”,5,5 ”-tetracarboxylic acid; H4BDPBTR, 1,3-bis(3,5,dicarboxyphenyl)-1,2,4-benzotriazin-4-yl radical)) with a new stable radical linker doped into the structure has been synthesized and investigated using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). Mixed linkers H(4)TPTA and H4BDPBTR were used to bridge copper(II) paddle-wheel units into a porous framework, where H4BDPBTR is the close structural analogue of H(4)TPTA. MOFs with various x = 0-0.4 were investigated. EPR studies indicated that the radical linker binds to the copper(II) units differently compared to diamagnetic linker, resulting in the formation of nanosized structural defects. Moreover, remarkable kinetic phenomena were observed upon cooling of this MOF, where slow structural rearrangements and concomitant changes of magnetic interactions were induced. Thus, our findings demonstrate that doping of structurally mimicking radical linkers into MOFs represents an efficient approach for designing target nanosized defects and introducing new magnetostructural functionalities for a variety of applications.

Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, which belongs to the Rubiaceae family, is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine. Although effect of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis has been widely reported, its anti-inflammatory role in intestinal mucosal injury induced by LPS remains unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effects of decoction extracted from Gardenia jasminoides on the morphology and intestinal antioxidant capacity of duodenum induced by LPS in mice. Further analysis was carried out in the expression of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) was determined by Western blot. Gardenia jasminoides water extract was qualitative analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electro spray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The results showed that Gardenia decoction markedly inhibited the LPS-induced Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and IL-1 production. It was also observed that Gardenia decoction attenuated duodenum histopathology changes in the mouse models. Furthermore, Gardenia decoction inhibited the expression of NF-kappa B in LPS stimulated mouse duodenum. These results suggest that Gardenia decoction exerts an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant property by up-regulating the activities of the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), the total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). Gardenia decoction is highly effective in inhibiting intestinal mucosal damage and may be a promising potential therapeutic reagent for intestinal mucosal damage treatment.

The study determined the chemical constituents and anti-inflammatory effects of leaf oil from Cinnamomum subavenium (CS-LO) that has been used in folk medicine to treat various symptoms including inflammation. The anti-inflammatory effects of the oil were evaluated by LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and the Carr-induced hind mouse paw edema model, respectively. In vitro, nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE(2)), TNF-, IL-6, and IL-1 were significantly decreased by CS-LO, and the expression of nuclear factor-B (NF-B) protein was blocked as well. In in vivo, the malondialdehyde (MDA) and paw edema levels were decreased by CS-LO, and the same result came up on the NO and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-a) of serum at the 5th h after Carr injection. In addition, iNOS and COX-2 immunoreactive cells of the paw tissue were decreased significantly by CS-LO (200 mg/kg) in histological examination. The present findings indicated that CS-LO have anti-inflammatory properties, and the effects might be caused through inhibiting iNOS, COX-2, TNF-, IL-1, and IL-6 expression via affecting NF-B pathway, which will provide a power scientific basis for CS-LO to be used as the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

In order to discover more potent antifungal, a series of 2-aryl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2-iums were reasonable designed and productive synthesized by introducing benzoic acid and phenol pharmacophores into the 2-position of isoquinoline. Their structures were identified by NMR and HRMS. The preliminary in vitro antifungal results showed that most of the title compounds exhibited moderate to significant inhibitory activities against various phytopathogenic fungi at 50 mu g.mL(-1), and were equal to controls (chlorothalonil, carbendazim). The concentration of 50% inhibition rate (EC50]) of 2-(3-ethoxycarbonyl-phenyl)-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2-ium (4j) against R. solani was 3.8495 mu g.mL(-1), which was significantly superior to chlorothalonil (4.6328 mu g.mL(-1)). All the EC50 values of 5 compounds (7.4583 similar to 15.4495 mu g.mL(-1)) against R. cerealis were better than chlorothalonil (16.0137 mu g.mL(-1)), and 2-(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2-ium (4f) is the best one. The present results provide valuable information for development of plant-based antifungal agents.

Dan-Huang-Qu-Yu capsule, a Chinese herbal medicine compound preparation, is widely used for chronic pelvic inflammatory disease. In this study, a rapid, selective, and sensitive microwave-assisted extraction ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-Q Exactive quadrupole-orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry method was developed for analyzing its chemical compositions. A total of 85 compounds, including 22 flavonoids, 8 terpenoids, 5 quinones, 5 phthaleolactone, 23 organic acids, and 22 other compounds were identified from Dan-Huang-Qu-Yu capsule. Among them, 35 major compounds were unambiguously detected by comparing them with reference standards and selected as quality control markers, which were simultaneously determined in Dan-Huang-Qu-Yu capsule. The established method was successfully validated and applied for simultaneous determination of 35 bioactive compounds in Dan-Huang-Qu-Yu capsule from ten sample batches. The quantitative data of the analytes were analyzed by principal component analysis for quality assessment of Dan-Huang-Qu-Yu capsule. Six compounds (e. g., astragaloside IV, salvianolic acid B, ellagic acid, chlorogenic acid, N-butylidenephthalide, and luteolin) were screened out and regarded as chemical markers for quality control of Dan-Huang-Qu-Yu capsule. The established method has been proved to be a novel and useful tool for rapid research of Dan-Huang-Qu-Yu capsule. This research will provide reference for the scientific research of traditional Chinese medicines.

A visible-light photocatalytic aerobic oxidative lactonization of arene C(sp (2) )-H bonds proceeds in the presence of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) and tert -butyl nitrite (TBN). We report the [Ru(p-cymene)(L-proline)Cl] ([Ru1])-catalyzed cyclization of 1,4,2-dioxazol-5-ones to form dihydroquinoline-2-ones in excellent yields with excellent regioselectivity via a formal intramolecular arene C(sp(2))-H amidation. The reactions of the 2- and 4-substituted aryl dioxazolones proceeds initially through spirolactamization via electrophilic amidation at the arene site, which is para or ortho to the substituent. A Hammett correlation study showed that the spirolactamization is likely to occur by electrophilic nitrenoid attack at the arene, which is characterized by a negative rho value of -0.73.
